Hello one and all. I'm impressed by all the great painting shared, I myself am collecting SM and Nids at the present. I came into the hobby last year after many years of dreaming through White Dwarf magazines. It's been a labor of interest, collecting units, codexs, the rules and tools. I've made a choice to keep collecting and building 7th edition. But I've still an interest in playing outside the family in public tournaments. Will the units all cross over to 8th edition, size and weapon options? Will I need both the new rule and indexs?

Yes you will need the new rule book and indexes. 7th Ed material is not compatible with 8th.

All units for all factions AFAIK have been updated and released in the Indexes.

Not all units have been updated and released in the Indexes. I believe the current count is something around 50+ units have disappeared. Mostly, these were named units from Campaign books and White Dwarf articles. Some were army mainstays like the Ork Looted Wagon, whose 7th Edition rules appeared in a White Dwarf article.

Nonsense. Nothing GW currently sells has been cut and most stuff they ever sold in the past is still in.

Appreciate it. So I'm not so sure I got the answer to my question. I get that I'll need the new book sets but there's a 50% or 50 units that now have a different composition. Example SM Devastater 1 sargent with meltabombs, 4 men heavy weapon, + 5 stock marines?

Clinton Smurf,

You will find that you can recreate your army almost straight across between 7th and 8th if you are using points. Even if you are using the Force method of choosing armies they generally match the numbers of figures you used to build units in 7th.

To use your example: SM Devastator 1 sergeant, 4 men with heavy weapons, and 5 bolter armed marines is still around.

There have been changes, your Command Squad does not exist the same way because Characters are independent of squads now...but you can still select a small unit like a Command Squad to travel near your Captain.

Hope that brief explanation helps put your mind at ease.

Cheers,

CB

The posters above weren't wrong. . . Most of what was removed was unsupported with a figure (so really, no big loss) The above mentioned Looted Wagon does not now, nor has it ever to my knowledge, had a model.

To the OP: depending on how familiar/experienced you were in 7th, you may notice a few major changes to 8th. Firstly, if you're playing by CAD, you now have a number to choose from based on size of your army and the like. Secondly, the 7th edition formations you may have come across and/or used, such as the Skyhammer Annihilation Force, are completely gone.

My suggestion to you, if you want to get into 8th, you'll need to get the BRB (or, the starter set, it's pretty damn good this edition), and Imperium 1 (marine book) and Xeno 2 (for your bugs). You could probably get away with waiting on Imperium 1, because some of us suspect that we'll see the return of the Codex by summer's end, with marines getting the first update.
