Subject: If Orks are mushrooms then…….

I watched a documentary on the bbc some years ago about fungi. On of the really interesting things was that most of the plant loves underground in some sort of root network. The mushrooms we see are the product of the end of the plants cycle, the mushrooms sprouts and ejects the spores for reproduction.
I also remember an interesting fact from QI that the largest living organism on earth is a mushroom plant that spans the entirety of one of the massive Canadian forest, due to the root network spreading over many many years without someone eating all of the mushrooms.
Soooooo could Orks be the mushrooms and under the planets surface where Orks have “seeded” is a large root network which is the real brains of the operation or maybe the power behind the waaagh. We know that if you kill all the Orks they will eventually come back, like a weed, navies of their fungal nature and reproduction through spores.
I know there is nothing in the books to prove this just thought it was a fun theory

This would be an interesting concept for something like a proper Ork homeworld with cultivation caves to grow legions of Orks. I could certainly imagine a Runtherd sitting in a cave just telling stories to the spores that would one day become Orks.

Since the concept was introduced, there has been a twin concept that once Orks have invaded a planet, you will never not have Orks on that planet without a continuous effort to kill off the resultant generations as soon as they spawn so you don't have a settlement develop.

Yes the “root network” is called hyphae or mycelium, depending on whether you’re talking about the individual threads (hyphae), or the entire network (mycelium).
I believe that the main phase of ork life is the mycelium, and just like with the mushroom-forming fungi, the actual snot longs, boyz, and squigs are secondary phases for the species. As you know, not all fungi species even make mushrooms, like bread mold.
One factor in the mycelium being the primary stage of ork life is this is where it would perform an advanced function of life, sexual reproduction.
But the main reason is that the mycelium does the most important thing that the Old Ones designed them for. They invade a place, bring their own supply network and support population, and then they big the enemy down pretty much forever. The Eldar were the species made to do surgical strikes, it’s the quality of being potentially anywhere and everywhere that the Orks were designed for. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh yeah, I forgot to add that the actual ork boys are also a lot like the mushroom caps - they have specific and limited uses.
As you know from tv, the mushroom is mostly dead cells; it doesn’t have anything like blood vessels to bring nutrients to all the structures. The only reason for the fungus to build a mushroom is to help spread spores - which is what ork boyz do. Ork boyz can capture a space hulk or asteroid and go to different planets to spread more mycelium.
The mycelium does the work of 1: creating a permanent military presence and 2: adapting the ork forces to the conditions in the new environment.

Orks are cool Automatically Appended Next Post: But the difference is that mushrooms are mostly dead cells but Orks are sentient and will love for a long time like Ghaz. And they can leave the planet/mycelium. So the mushroom becomes and independent agent from the mycelium

I brought this up before, but since orks are fungus, that means you can eat them. If the Imperium can make ork the taste sensation of the 41st millenium, perhaps humanity might make a dent in the galactic ork population. Look at how many critters we've hunted into extinction on our planet. Admittedly, passenger pigeons, dodos, and pygmy elephants did not have stompas and gargants. Similarly truffles do not fight back when uprooted. Still, humans go to great lengths to hunt stuff if there is profit in it.
Ork: it's what's for dinner.
FWIW, I do like mushrooms a lot, but I prefer ones that aren't trying to kill me either by poison or shooty-choppas.

For the same reason they have pronouns and male-gendered speech patterned after english football hooligans, cause GW invented them first and the fungus thing was added years later (in Gorkamorka's Da Uvver book I think)

Apparently they know what genitals are, going by the few times nut shots have popped up in the fluff, so that would imply that they also have some sensitivity down there. I don't know if they have shame, but I do know that getting your sensitive bits caught on jagged bits of metal whenever you try to mount a bike is not going to result in a good time.

I don't think orks (and grots, squigs, etc) are actual fungus, but instead are animal-like aliens that have a symbiotic relationship with a fungus-like lifeform.

"Orks are a symbiosis of both animal and fungus at the most basic level. The Orks animal side lives in complete harmony with its fungal side and each compliment the other and come together to form a tough and resilient creature." Can't remember if that's originally from Gorkamorka, the 3rd ed Codex or the WD stuff released around Armageddon.

Well, it's not unlikely Orks do the same with humans though.
There's a scene in the Beast Arises series others have interpreted as concentration camp to kill humans, my interpretation was more that it was a factory farming system with humans.

It is important to note that Orks are not mushrooms but rather a symbiosis of animal and fungus.
They mostly display animal characteristics but reproduce via spores.
Orks really are only one species of the much larger Orkoid family, which in itself forms a complete ecoystem from simple fungus to complex sentient lifeforms.
This is why Orks are so adaptable and widespread. They basically carry their own ecosystem and supply lines with them in the form of spores.
Once released, these spores slowly build up the Orkoid ecosystem, developing into more advanced lifeforms over time. It starts with plant life (the various types of Orkoid fungus), then develops animal life (the various species of Squigs) and then develops gradually larger forms of intelligent life (first Snotlings, then Gretchin, then finally Orks). The Orks then develop technology (due to their innate knowledge that has been coded into them) to leave the planet, spreading their spores to new worlds everywhere they go.

I find it frustrating that sometimes text is written to describe the objective truth about a faction, especially xenos, and sometimes it’s written from the perspective of an imperial xenologist studying the species
The codex should be like an Ork explaining to you about Orks, i.e actually fact. Conjecture from an imperial perspective should be in codex space marines etc
Otherwise even if you choose to play anon imperium faction you are always playing the game through an imperial lense

Agreed. The only reason Orks have the whole "it works cos Orks" meme is because of a piece of background had a Techpriest analyse some Ork weapons and say they could never work so clearly its psychic shenanigans. Then it got blown out of proportion and now its "canon" to loads of people. What if the Techpriest wasn't that smart or was more focused on Chemistry than Weaponry? What if it was actually a perfectly designed weapon and it couldn't get out that a Xenos had made it?
