Subject: VOTE for the winner of the 103rd Dakka Painting Challenge: Sun’s Out, Guns Out
|
 |
The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar
|
This month the topic was "Sun’s Out, Guns Out". Rip off those sleeves and flex those muscles. Let’s see those arms. Or, if you have been neglecting time in the gym (do you even lift bro?) go more literal and overcompensate with some massive cannons. Or just double down on the theme and paint some guns that shoot suns! Either something like a plasma gun, or some star-eating doomsday device. Desert or other sun-baked scenes would also be good. Maybe the beach?
As always, you're free to hand out as many votes as you like, and for any entry you feel deserves recognition, based on anything from technical proficiency or model choice, a neat conversion or a cool take on the theme, or anything else! You're also very welcome to leave some feedback here for the entrants, and many of the images click through to the Dakka gallery if you'd like to give out a vote or two there as well.

I’m not sure if I can rest the count without nuking the whole thread? It looks like only one vote was cast before I fixed it. Not ideal, but also not the end of the world. Moving forward, people should be able to vote for multiple entries.

Once again, we have a great set of entries, with a variety of interpretations of the theme. I gave out a lot of votes...
Captain Brown: I like your classic take on some classic models. The white masks will tie these models in with your other Eldar quite well.
ms07b3: Classic red, black, and brass. I feel like the red on the wings might have benefited from a brighter highlight like you used on the face, to help it stand out against the black of the wing membranes.
inmygravenimage: as I mentioned on your P&M blog, I like the green you chose for the skin-- it channels Lou Ferrigno!
TheChrispyOne: The painted-on texture on the pants adds a lot of visual interest, as does the lovely purple hair.
ShadowsAndDust: The turquoise and gold are a nice color combo. Kudos for keeping the scheme simple.
theCrowe: Nothing simple about this guy's paint scheme. It's a great combination of RT/2ed era colors with a more recent model.
Mothsniper: The gradient on the yellow armor is outstanding. Did you really achieve that with Contrast Paints? Also, the headgear-as-shoulder flash is a great touch.
painting_jon: Your simple, muted palette makes the colors on the cloak really pop. Also, the way you painted the faced just oozes menace.
Nevelon: It's strange to see your name attached to a SM model that isn't blue. The lenses really draw the eye.
Daia T'Nara: As I commented on your P&M blog, I like your plasma glow, as well as all the naughty little details one expect from one of your models.
Kalkyrie: All your different plasma effects give these models a lot of character.
Leopold Helveine: This is a proper Orky vehicle. A very business-like camo paint job, dust and grime as one would expect, and enough bright red bits the make the vehicle stand out on the tabletop.
XvArcanevX: Your subtle-yet-effective work on the skin and blue loincloth are outstanding. It feels like this guy is leaping out of the cover of a paperback Fantasy novel.
KidCthulhu: This is a kitbash done right-- ever part seems to belong. The blue urban camo is quite nicely done.
Geifer: Another cool original sculpt. I wish I could paint camo as well as you did on this model. I count four colors, and somehow you keep them all distinct.
Pariah Press: This is a classic paint job on a classic model. The blue and white stripes really take me back to 2nd/3rd Edition.
halfling84: You managed to get an impressive amount of detail into some truly tiny models.
me: I chose what I considered the best of the set of twelve ogres in this set. I'm particularly proud of the sword, especially the edge-- the weapon is actually a flat sheet of resin, so I had to paint the edge on by hand.
Olthannon: Purple and yellow make for a truly striking combination. All the little spot colors add up to a nice effect.
Gulgog TufToof: It's odd not seeing an Ork in your entry. I'm impressed that you managed to paint that left eye.
youwashock: I like your subtle grime on the lower legs, as well as the lights in the barrels of the melta guns.
Snail22: These guys will look ready for business. They will be great lined up in a larger unit.
DJJazzyJeff: The tattoos, bandanas, and insignias on their vest just scream "biker gang." Bonus points for the Hulkster!
Vejut: Purple and green are a bold combination. This fighter doesn't mind being seen in battle!
Midget Gems: This Ork means business. I'm especially impressed by the checks on the gun casings.
Jadenim: A no-nonsense paintjob on a no-nonsense model. Very subtle and very effective highlighting, especially on the wheels.
Tallandra: I know I've asked before, but what chapter uses these colors?
Maharg: I like your take on these ogres. The two-toned pants are a nice touch.
Mr Nobody: The use of a truck for the head gives this model a great Transformers vibe.
Great work, everyone!

Ms07b3 - Angron is a great model and you have done him justice here. The metallics are nicely done but it’s that base that really sells it for me. I also like the choice of background colour, the whole is quite hellish. I can hear Doom music playing in my head when I’m looking at this.
TheCrispyOne - The choice of greens is nice and all have that worn out look. The crosshatching is nicely done and further sells the wear and tear. And just enough flash of colour in the hair to give us a cyber punk feel.
Daia T’nara - Always nice to see more of your work with pastels. For some reason the OSL on the plasma gun caught my eye.
Leopold Helveine - It’s not the best paint job I’ve seen but something about the kitbash works for me. I think it’s how busy all the orks are. The way the crawling out of the hatches and prepping the rocket gives everything a sense of action.
Midget Gems - A cool looking model to me, and the details of the skin and chequers are all nicely done. That and I might be a sucker for orks.

My custom chapter.

The combo of Dark Angels Green and Space Wolves Grey is sorta heretical, but I just liked the look when I was experimenting with colour schemes.

Well, tons of great models in this month’s competition. My votes went to Mothsniper, JoshinJapan, Olthannon, YouWasShock and Mr.Nobody.
I confined myself to five votes but could have easily given out more.
So, feedback time:
Captain Brown - Great weathering in the terrain and the colors on the minis are smashing!
ms07b3 - Angron looking crisp and colorful here. Nice clean job!
Inmygravenimage - Wonderful shades of green and really nice highlights on Hulk here, very fun model to look at!
TheChrispyOne - This is a really lovely paint job and frankly I should have given this a vote. It makes really wonderful use of contrast on the pants and the color choice is lovely. Very nice work.
Shadows and Dust - These little lizard men look vibrant. Nice colors and really fun characters.
TheCrowe - I think this work REALLY gets the ‘Ork Ethos’ across. Insane, angry, loud, brash and brilliant.
Mothsniper - Not much to say apart from ‘how the heck do you manage to get such an awesome paint job done with so few paints and in such little time?!’ Pure talent… obviously. Brilliant stuff and I am a fan!
Painting-Jon - This model is stoic. Great use of dry brushing here (best I can tell) The metallics look gritty.
Nevelon - Love the pants on this guy… and the work on the face is pretty great too. Full of character for sure!
Daia T’nara - This is a really interesting model to look at and I am pretty blown away by the amount of color you have used and how, instead of looking too brash, it actually all works well together. Impressive! In particular the gold studded boot.
Kalkyrie - Now it seems to me you have struggled somewhat with getting clear photos here and that is a shame as there looks to be some decent edge work on these models and interesting themes.
Leopold Helveine - This is another entry I should have cast a vote for. Amazing sense of action and character to this work and just really inventive in getting across the brick-a-brac nature of ork culture. Very fun, very cool.
XvArcanevX - Note to self… must try harder.
Kid Cthulhu - This is nice, crisp, clean and vibrant work. Love the visor and the camo… very good use of color!
Geifer - The fact you sculpt these is awesome. Great work on the camo and the character! Wish I could sculpt!
Pariah Press - This tank is really impressive. Great paint job and the little details like the sand on the tracks are brilliant!
Halfling 84 - Nice clean work. Nice color.
JoshinJapan - Well, brilliant, as per usual. A standard bearer for the monthly competition for sure and this work is every bit as good as I have come to expect when you submit your entries every month. The work on the fabric and the use of color is superb. Awesome.
Olthannon - This is amongst my favorites this month and the paint job here is frankly brilliant. Clean, great use of color, vibrant and with a ton of interesting details… it’s just great work. Look forward to seeing what comes next!
Gulgog Tuftoof - Very interesting little fella. Looks suitably grimy and post apocalyptic.
YouWasShock - Badass paint job and brilliant attention to detail (as per usual). Brilliant use of edge highlighting on the arms. A clear contender. Got my vote.
Snail22 - Nice crisp work here. Simple and effective.
DJJazzyJeff - I genuinely love these little dudes and could have cast a vote based on the character you have managed to portray. They are great fun to look at and the work on the jackets and tattoos is really impressive. I should have cast a vote for these in retrospect.
Vejut - Nice vibrant colors but I feel the paint could be thinned a little further for the layering. Just an observation but a nice palette all the same.
Midget Gems - This dude is awesome to look at! Nice use of greens and great work on the weapons. Like it!
Jadenim - Very subtle and authentic use of color here. This really feels like a snapshot of a battlefield. Very nice work indeed.
Tallandra - Very crisp highlighting and keen attention to details. Good use of color. Great job!
Maharg - Great work on the skin tones here and the metallics look great!
Mr Nobody - Well like many have observed, this mech is awesome! The weathering, the use of color, frankly everything, is just brilliant. I love it… you got a vote!
I think that is it. Well done to all participants!

Ah, I remember now. It's a really striking combination. Space Marines should stand out on the battlefield, after all!

Coming in a bit late - I got my votes (many, as usual) in on time, but work’s been busy so typing up feedback has been delayed a few times (yes I mostly post at work, they don’t know).
JoshInJapan wrote:Daia T'Nara: As I commented on your P&M blog, I like your plasma glow, as well as all the naughty little details one expect from one of your models.
Thanks (again).
Mr Nobody wrote:Daia T’nara - Always nice to see more of your work with pastels. For some reason the OSL on the plasma gun caught my eye.
Thank you - as I was saying over on the gallery thread I fluked into doing that when I was painting Doomrider, I’d meant to paint over the casing of his pistol after drybrushing the colour onto the white-based plasma coils so I didn’t worry about being too neat, and found it actually made for a decent glow. Luckily the basecoat of the gun was pink, so it was already suitable for a Slaaneshi weapon without needing any extra paint on the casing.
XvArcanevX wrote:Daia T’nara - This is a really interesting model to look at and I am pretty blown away by the amount of color you have used and how, instead of looking too brash, it actually all works well together. Impressive! In particular the gold studded boot.
Thanks. I didn’t really plan the colour scheme out much (I rarely do), but it’s a mix of the drab blues and browns I used for the common rabble cultists, plus some brighter parts since this gal’s got a plasma gun (even if it is barely functional) so she must have some status within the cultists. Since the studded boot echoes the same kind of attire on old daemonettes of the era I figured I’d paint it the same way, like she’s trying to look like her heroes.
Captain Brown: Love the minis, great highlighting on the black armour and shuriken cannon barrels.
ms07b3: He looks cheerful - I like the brighter colour helping the head and hands stand out, it’s a very complicated mini and that bold red skin keeps the key points from being lost in all the detail.
inmygravenimage: Great work on the highlighting on all those muscles, particularly the effect of lighting from above rather than having every surface painted to the same highlight.
TheChrispyOne: That’s quite a gun. I like the warmth of the skin and hair standing out against the more muted tones of the uniform.
ShadowsAndDust: Love the lush blue on their scales, it makes a wonderful pair with the warm colour of the metals.
theCrowe: That’s super orky, I particularly like how battered the bare metals look.
Mothsniper: Nice work on the tan, it’s bold and rich but not cartoony-colourful, good balancing act.
painting_jon: Love the painting on his face, it really pops out and gives a sense of weight to all that armour surrounding it.
Nevelon: It’s fully nostalgia talking but I love these goofy old scouts, and you’ve done a great job with him.
Daia T’Nara: The fact that the sex toys are merely stowed on the backpack shows remarkable restraint, I’m so proud of you.
Kalkyrie: The vibrancy of the plasma is great, and the firing and malfunctioning bursts are a top tier addition that really make the squad stand out.
Leopold Helveine: I’m particularly fond of looted vehicles, and this is a great example of proper Orky flavour applied to one.
XvArcanevX: Wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of that charge - the vivid red braids are a great accent.
KidCthulhu: Nifty urban camo pattern, and the red visor is a fun touch.
Geifer: Great work, I love the hang of the uniform, and of course the all-over camo.
Pariah Press: Unquestionably one of the best big guns. I like the dirt on the rear platform, the way it’s focused to show where boots would go on the ladder and most often be standing around the rear of the gun.
halfling84: They’re so cute! Good colour scheme, rich without being toyish.
JoshInJapan: So much excellent work on the clothes and equipment, the textures are super convincing.
Olthannon: I like the variety in this trio, and the contrast between their vivid armour and the more mundane colours on their weapons and gear.
Gulgog TufToof: I like the utilitarian colours and splashes of grime - the colour scheme overall does a great job of balancing drab with distinctive.
youwashock: Great overall effect on the hull, there’s wear and tear but it’s also clear the dread’s keepers are proud of it and its colours.
Snail22: A classic little unit, lovely clean high elf colours.
DJJazzyJeff: Straight out of an 80s action movie - the highlighting on the boots and uniforms caught my eye particularly, it picks out a lot of detail without making them too grey-looking. Love the logo on the back of the jacket.
Vejut: Great highlighting, especially the lining of the cloak, so much texture contrasted against the smooth colours of the outer layer.
Midget Gems: That’s a great looking boss, I really like the simplicity of his stance and gear, really conveys a sense of raw power without needing to be loaded down with extra armour everywhere.
Jadenim: I’ve never collected Guard myself (aside from one very odd command squad) but I’ve always liked the heavy weapon teams, and this is a great one, very convincingly part of their dusty environment.
Tallandra: Very powerful looking, and I like how the colour scheme helps define the separate components of the ‘torso’, setting the inner sarcophagus apart.
Maharg: Great work on the skin, it’s really convincing and sells the power of those bulging muscles.
Mr Nobody: Lovely conversion, you can really sense the mad mekboy thought process behind it, and the paint job ties everything together really well.
