Bit of a marketing video, rather than showing much of the good stuff ie: the paints actually being used, but 200+ new paints in the new range being released in January 2024.

I'm usually pretty sceptical about all these new paint ranges coming out in recent years, but from what little we see in the videos the colours do seem to be pretty vibrant.

I have a huge paint collection from across loads of ranges, but I'd honestly love to buy into a single range that just works well. I do find it really slows down painting huge amounts of minis having to chop and change between ranges and I've never been the biggest fan of having to mix colours. I'm hoping we get some decent reviews soon (and not more youtube videos telling us how great the paints are which may or may not have been sent for free. like most of the early speed paint videos )

From the glance at the video colour charts (and presuming the range will be about the same as their current line) it does appear to be missing those gritty, more realistic tones. Thankfully vallejo has always covered them well enough.

If it is only another range of paints i'm all for it, vibrants color can be useful in fantasy armies. Thing with army painter is in my opinion that we can expect inconstencies between different colours. I like my AP a lot, but some are definitly tricky or strange to use.

I like the idea of 6-tone triads. I'll pick up a few just to try them out, hopefully these cover as well as the video shows. Can't be worse than their current pain line

Also, I really hope the washes are just new labels, AP washes are still my go-to wash for acrylics.

I hope they improve the gel medium they use. I swear half the bottle is clear snot no matter how much I shake it, and even if I can get it mixed, that much medium results in poor coverage.

I used to use some of their non-speedpaints, but whatever they changed the formula to a while back made me drop them.

Does this paint do anything different or better than other paints on the market? Is there any improvement on their existing formula - or for that matter their quality control?

More colors are always great... but not if its substandard paint, which is what Army Painter is in my opinion (not speedpaint, speedpaint is a decent product).

Same here....

It looks like those paints will have a much better coverage that their range they have at this moment. We will see how good they're actually and if they can compete with One Coat Paints and the new Vallejo Game Colors....

Is this replacing their current stuff, or are they expecting us to add an entire additional rack of paints?

It will replace the current paint range.

The Army Painter launched a website for their new range that answers a few questions and has a colour chart for all 216 colours: https://www.thearmypainter.com/fanatic

"upgrades"

I buy new paints when the old ones are done and not when something new comes around

I guess I missed several changes within the paint ranges over time and it does not bother me

So next time my current ones are gone I will look what is the best range for the price and I don't care if this is army painter, Vallejo, GW or whatever else is new

It's a buy from me if the quality of the product works out to be consistent. Big problem with the current range for me is that it's Luke each individual bottle of paint was made by a different manufacturer according to a different formula.

I am deeply unimpressed with some of the AP range I have bought previously - it is so hit and miss. The main problem is coverage (or lack of it) which it looks like they are addressing.

On the other hand I love their quickshade inks - Strong Tone and Dark tone are my go to solutions for shading.

Lets hope that this new range lives up to their marketing material.

I didn't love their regular line, but I like their Speedpaints and airbrush lines. I used Contrast medium to thin the old Speedpaints and didn't have issues. And their air paints apply really nicely. Not surprised that they're rebooting their regular paints in that context.

Influencers sure seem happy about these

But I have dozens of AP paints and I regret every one. They cost only marginally less than top top brands and so far have been barely functional, somewhere on the level of early 2000s GW paints. I'd rather pay the extra 20 cents for AK.

They were good when they first came out, newer army painter formula is a little too satin and seems to have a lot of gel medium in it.

I noticed the difference directly when switching from an old pot of uniform grey (highly pigmented, very liquid) to a newer pot which felt a little more "jelly-like", it's hard to explain.

If they're reworking and fixing the range, that's a good thing. Hopefully they colour match to the old range.

Are they not mostly new colours, because they are moving to this 6-colour-multiple-triad thing?

Agreed. My experience with AP has been nothing but negative. The QC on the product is some of the worst I've seen in any industry and you're basically playing roulette on whether any given bottle is going to do what you need it to or be utter gak and potentially ruin your paintjob. The reactivation issue on the original speedpaints was the most blatant example of the inferiority of their product.

I've heard good things about Speedpaint 2.0, so I'm willing to give that a chance as something I use for slapchop-esque painting (which is otherwise a waste of very expensive contrast paint). Im waiting to see and hear more about the new Fanatic paint line before I decide to commit to it though.

I'll pick up a few of the paints when they're available as singles. I've been looking for some colors along the darker side of their 'Vibrant Greens' flexible triad and I haven't found any I'm really happy with so I'll bite the bullet to see if they live up to the hype that they're giving them.

I've used AP products for a while and found them to be good quality but curiously I've never used their paints. I was tempted to put a pre-order down for the mid-level pack based on the views of a few more trusted influencers. This thread has been an interesting read as I didn't realise how poorly thought of their paints were. Considering Army Painter paints seem to be tricky to get hold of so buying individual bottles will be a pain I will hold off for the time being.

Glad to hear stahly is doing a review.

Army Painter paint seems to be one of the easiest to get ahold of, at least around me. Almost every store that carries miniatures paints seems to carry army painter in addition to GW/citadel. Vallejo is the other very common one.

I know some people swear by AP, but I don't understand why. My own experience with them is one of complete inconsistency - one bottle is just fine (and only fine, not great, but usable), the next is impossbly thin, another incredibly thick. No amount of shaking, mixing, thinning, etc. will fix them or get them working the same way. I even have had issues with two paints of supposedly identical color are actually entirely different colors nowhere even close to comparable (i.e. a paint that is supposed to be a medium green - one bottle comes out more like a light green, the other comes out brown. Threw a mixing ball in there with some thinner and let them ride on my vortex mixer, still wouldn't mix to a different color).

Then theres the original speedpaint, which was a product that was fundamentally flawed and virtually unusable as intended due to the reactivation effect, which they tried to convince customers was an intentional feature, only to then finally acknowledge that it was a product defect which they couldn't correct and that they needed to discontinue the product to try to correct it. (which they did, ironically though people then complained that the lack of reactivation made them worse than the originals).
