Just watched it last night in theaters. Pretty good flick all things considered. Had last seen Dev Patel in The Green Knight. Always a little nervous with a writer-director-star hat trick, runs the risk of becoming a vanity project, but not the case here. Rather a fun interpretation of a classic revenge story. Overall a recommendation to see it in theaters. Some critiques were that it ran a little long, fair enough for a first-time director, and that it relied too much on shaky cam, but I found the action easy to follow and the claustrophobic, anxious camerawork fit the tone of the film, and the final action sequence, which takes place after the protagonist has centered himself and taken control of his rage, is actually shot much steadier and includes several long one-shots. Add that to the fact that (according to some people on the internet) much of the film was shot on whatever equipment was available, it gives the whole movie a fun DIY feel. The soundtrack didn't hurt either. Really liked the scene with the drums and the punching bag.

Overall a good action movie, with a straightforward revenge story, that made a lot of creative choices. Anyone else enjoy it?

I was really looking forward to seeing this until I heard about the shaky cam and that there was a disturbing scene of sexual violence(?). That’s the kind of thing that would keep me from enjoying the film or especially bringing my family.

I appreciate that point but to be honest this movie is too violent for kids regardless. There is one scene of sexual violence which is heavily implied but not explicitly shown, and several scenes of sex workers doing sex work without nudity, so viewer discretion as is appropriate. When the scene begins it's obvious where it is going and it's in the middle of a flashback sequence, so it's a good time to get a popcorn refill.

Honestly the shaky cam didn't bother me as much as I thought it would, like I said it was motivated and the final action sequence, which takes like a full 30-45 minutes, is mostly shot clean.
