Hey all, had a few requests for tutorials on how I do the bases for my tau army. Finally got the time to do it so here we go

The base itself is textured with polyfilla with pieces of slate for detailing.

1. The mini is done, the base is untouched


2. Heavy drybrush Steel Legion Drab, making sure to stay off the slate pieces


3. Drybrush Rakarth Flesh


4. Drybrush the slate Dawnstone


5. Drybrush the slate Adminustratum Grey and edge the base with black


6. Standard flock is applied (mine's a mix of two types of model scenic stuff but any old flock will do really) making sure to keep it away from the edges of the slate (where the larger plants would grow)


7. 6mm Microtufts are applied around the flock in patches, subtle but worth it


8. Army painter Jungle Tufts are applied more towards the slate and in isolated clumps


9. A mix of army painter flower tufts (and another companies who's label I lost! for the red ones) are applied

What texture did you put on the base? It looks like a smear of plaster or something?

That's an awesome base to do. I really want to know where you got the flower tufts. I want Slaanesh Chaos Marines to walk through a field of flowers if I'm going to do them.

Looks like spackling putty/paste...is that what you used for the base layer?

Wonderful I think I'll be doing something like this for my big Sisters of Battle project. Feels fitting for them. May I ask, I know you say you're using 'standard flock' but it looks rather vibrant. Is this lighting, or is it really just some standard flock? The 'static grass' like stuff from GWS appears to be more dull has more red in it, where the flock you're using seems cleaner, vibrant, and like lush green grass.

So I looked around on the Mininatur website and cant find the flowers. What exactly are they called and where can I find them on the website? I might be making Deamons or Necron soon and I think these bases would be so funny! If you could PM me the links (or post them here, doesn't make a difference) so that I can try these for myself I would be grateful! The flowers look so awesome

Maybe if you get one of the 'strips' you could just cut some of the flowers off the strip? As for just some individual 'tufts' not finding anything like that either. On that note you could pick the 'colorful' strip or tailor it to the colors you want, lots out there.

I gotta say, the placing of flowers at the feet of an aggressive robot designed to obliterate enemies made me laugh. I love it though, the contrast is wonderful!

Yep fluffywolf2, those are the tufts I use Didn't use the strips as I don't think I could make them work.

In talking to my LGS, I hear it can be difficult to order from them, but they do have a fantastic line of products.

I wanna start a WHFB army just so I can base them like this (my 40k ones are much more grimdark)

I really like the flowers its pretty funny but looks good actually!
I also like the idea of using spackling/polycrap on the bases I should try that I am getting tired of glueing on kitty litter and drybrushing lol

The base looks amazing when finished!
