I cannot wait for the terrain . It must be pricey but might be able to split it with friends (each buy a few buildings or the like).

Just got through reading the "first look". I like what I'm reading. I definitely plan to get the rules. I've already got all the 10mm ground troops/vehicles I need, now I just need to prep a few dropships and I'll be ready to go.
cincydooley wrote:Problem is that it's 10mm, which is like, in between the two more popular sizes of 6mm and 15mm, so there's not a TON of stuff specifically fit to scale. Further, most of the 15mm wargaming is historical, so its hard to find anything appropriately sci fi.
This is actually not entirely true anymore. 15mm Sci-Fi is in a bit of a renaissance right now and there's a few companies doing sci-fi buildings and structures in 15mm, with more on the way. Most of which will work fine in 10mm. Here's a couple:
http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/15build.htm (Check they're 6mm stuff as well)
http://www.criticalmassgames.com/default.asp?category=terrain
http://store.gcmshop.com/category/146-tomorrows-war-15mm-structures.aspx
http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/terrain-camp-playing-aids.html
The N Scale buildings Orlanth was nice enough to research are good options too, though I almost prefer the larger look of 15mm stuff, especially when you are dealing with based 10mm infantry.
Also, I posted a while back about the Sci-Fi card buildings (10mm Mechwarrior and 15mm GZG) that I really like to use.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/840/446566.page#4384861
The figs in the pictures are 10mm Mechwarrior figs rebased on traditional wargames bases.
Lastly, I recently picked up a few of the proxie models 15mm buildings as well. The Gothic building is usable as-is. The Modern/Sci-Fi Walls need only have the front door changed, the rear wearhouse doors are great as-is, though I will be adding a bit of cross stitch mesh to the inside of the windows to downscale them a bit.
http://proxiemodels.com/terrain.aspx
At 4 bucks each, they're quite affordable also!

now that we're done with the guy raging about not getting free rules..yes, i agree, really looking forward to the terrain also. Never quite got around to getting a decent setup back when i was playing heavy gear, this looks like a prime opportunity to get on it.

Please, elaborate. The frustrating thing is that a great portion of this community seems to refuse to accept that the perceived concern over not being able to get models AFTER the rules are released is valid. That's all. It's a very realistic scenario because we haven't heard anything from Hawk to assuage any of those fears. It was near impossible to get some Privateer models for almost a year, and Their company is what, 35 TIMES the size of Hawk?
And when you've placed some fiscal stake in the company (through preordering a product) I think its understandable and justified to be concerned when there isn't a peep for two weeks and the pre-order deadline is fast approaching. Yes, I realize it's a one man show. Yes, I realize that one man is probably very busy. But it takes all of 30 seconds to make a daily update to facebook that would put many minds at ease. Perhaps his biggest mistake has been trying to do this alone, regardless of how admirable or laudable it may seem.
As far as terrain goes, I think this is one really savvy move by Hawk: release a game in a scale that pretty much no one else does, then corner the market on terrain. THEN make terrain REALLY important in your rules so people NEED the terrain. I hope it isn't terribly expensive, because I'll certainly buy some, as the card buildings just aren't for me. Automatically Appended Next Post: nate2010 wrote:now that we're done with the guy raging about not getting free rules..yes, i agree, really looking forward to the terrain also. Read the effin thread, new guy. I've said many times I'd be willing to pay (and have preordered) them. I said I believe it would be more in their interests to release a quickstart version now to entice those holding off for the rules.
Know what you're talking about before you spout off.

@all: Rule Number One requires that all users be polite. Coming into a thread late with a lot of assumptions, blowing up at people for seemingly misrepresenting one's opinions, etc, are not polite actions. Please remember this is just a forum to have fun talking about fun games. If you feel the need to insult someone or feel like you're being insulted, take a break, catch some fresh air IRL, but don't waste your time getting your account suspended by acting out. Thanks very much!

Well the way I look at it is that we've all raged at the fact he's releasing the rules at the same time as the models. The little information we have is just frustrating to different levels to different people. As it stands, the fact he still is working on the rules is a mixed blessing. Its good that he's trying to get everything right but its bad that he's doesn't have it done yet. Anyway it doesn't really matter. Raging about it won't change anything, maybe emailing him about it will. I would like a point value for the starting armies but then that doesn't really bother me so much. Warmachine/Hordes got me into mini's and their original starting sets are anything but balanced. And if you doubt that think about what you get. Trolls don't have a heavy and Cryx has one of the best control casters as their warcaster. The point values range from 9-13 and in a game where 1 point off can hurt you, that matters. But I think it will be balanced enough to play a game with any of the two factions.

i dont see it as bad...he's got a release date scheduled, it is not yet that day. not that its anything worth complaining about, but save the complaining until there is actually a deadline that's been missed. I'm sure as the designer of the game, he has put together decently balanced armies.

Have you read anything about this game, actually? The Hawk website says they aren't balanced.

Seriously mate you need to calm down a bit, your comments are coming across as more than a little extreme.
I cannot wait for the terrain . It must be pricey but might be able to split it with friends (each buy a few buildings or the like).
I'm planning on doing the same thing hopefully, either that or there are some great 6-10mm plastic city block ruins for sale on ebay quite often.

Wow. Still the complaints, although now from just one guy. Continuously. Seriously?
"I want to know the points values"
So what? Would it make any difference to you if Dave said "the PHR starter is 115pts, and the UCM starter is 125". Would it be different if he said "the PHR starter is 2,145,001pts, and the UCM is 2,300,100".
Just buy some stuff (oh wait, you have, excellent), then wait for the rules, and see how it plays. I really, REALLY don't see what you have to gain by continually griping that the starter armies aren't entirely balanced. So what? Either: a) don't care that much whilst learning the rules, safe in the knowledge that your opponent's extra 5/50/5e10 pts doesn't really matter, you're only learning, or one of you dropped a model to compensate.
or...
b) keep beating yourself up that you might have a whole 1pt/16pts/1bjillion pts less than your opponent in your starter and that what's causing you to continuously lose in your tournament prep games.
As I've said before, I don't care. Me and a mate have got starter armies+extra inbound. Not once did we think "wait, what about the points". It's irrelevant right now.

Here is my take on it, Love the figures, like what I'm hearing on the rules, but I've got thousands of pounds of 40k stuff and only play that a few times a year so I'm holding off on the 6th ed, so there is some money Hawk will get instead if the rules look good, but not till they are out. Then I will need at least 2 armies to play..... Why the stress. Its a game!

Kinda wish they'd have taken some pics of the actual model or done a construction video to accompany that. As it stands the photos on th Hawk website give us more info than that "review" does.
Interested to actually get hands on with these and actually see the resin they're using.

Tad too gushing for my tastes. he doesn't even mention things that he doesn't like due to personal preference, it's all "Ooooh, this is great and so impressive" and statements of fact.
That, using stock Hawk photos and the fact the site has done this kind of thing with every DzC preview they've done make me doubt their validity as an objective source of information. Hell, I'd find it hard to be objective if Hawk invited me up to their HQ, let me test an unreleased game and gave me a free model of my choosing too, but people don't use me as a source of news.

What would be great is if Hawk released the rules as a pdf on drivethru/wargamesvault or similar site, once they are off to the printers. I wouldnt mind buying the pdf even though I preordered the dead wood copy. I always find it useful to have a pdf for my tablet.
Went to a local railway hobby shop to look at some N-gauge (1:160) scale buildings. Picked up a couple for about 20GBP each, so not the cheapest option. Of course over in SA we pay an arm and a leg for import duties. Got some nice looking trees relatively cheap though.

One thing that would really be of benefit now would be to know what kind of role buildings play in the rules. From what I have read about the game, it sounds like they are quite important.

From everything we've been offered, it sounds like they play a pretty darn important role. The Shell Case "review" makes it pretty clear that objectives are sometimes in buildings and that you can in fact destroy those buildings in order to destroy the things inside.

Ok, I will appologize upfront if this has already been said, but sweet zombie Jesus, I just don't have the fortitude to read through the last 14 pages...
Terrain: One good option I have seen done at 10mm is to simply take small wooden blocks and paint windows, doors and finnials etc. on them. The scale is such that even big buildings have no real relief on their surface so it works pretty well. If you wanted to add some you can use very thin strips of plasticard or balsa to make things like ledges and borders.
In fact, you could get pictures of buildings online, scale them down and print them out in color, and just cut and paste onto the blocks to make really nice looking flat pieces.
I suspect this is one reason why you rarely see 10mm and smaller terrain; it is relatively easy to make decent looking stuff since the details are lost to the scale.
However, if anyone feels like sculpting stuff and wants it cast, shoot me a PM and we can work things out.
