Subject: My first Ork list - 1500 points

Ultramarine Scout with Sniper Rifle

Hi all, wondering if you can give me some feedback on my first ork list. So far I have the Black Reach models + some bikers and trukks. I am building a speed freeks army. Some wargear / upgrade selections are there to add some character & variety. I think it would be silly to have an ork army with strictly regimented equipment!!! One thing I am not sure about is the painboy upgrade for the Nobz squad. Is the 30 points in addition to the 20 points for the model (50 total) or is it 30 points to add a painboy to the squad? The codex isnt quite clear. Let me know what you think.

Not a bad list by any means, but there are a few concerns. One thing you'll find with your Trukk Boyz is the need to overcompensate with them. 12 Boyz assaulting a 10-man Marine squad isn't likely to come out on top unless you get lucky with your rolls. You'll need to plan ahead and double-team thicker squads of people, especially if you're playing things like Black Templar or Space Wolves where they can really lay down the numbers of power armor suits in your way. Why do your Boyz have Big Shootas? They can't fire when the Trukk is moving +12", and when isn't a Trukk full of boyz moving that quickly? Your Nobz with Big Choppas are a bit unnecessary. How often do you need S7 assault hits as opposed to S5? Assault a lot of Dreadnoughts? Given the number of Deffkoptas and Warbuggies, I hope you never resort to this. These guys already wound Marines on 3's, no real need to spend points to make it 2's when the hits still bounce off of their armor. Spend the same amount of points on Cybork Bodies, they'll live longer and kill more because of it. Aether wrote:One thing I am not sure about is the painboy upgrade for the Nobz squad. Yes, upgrading to a painboy gives an additional cost on top of the cost of the Nob. Worth it every time, though, since having access to Feel No Pain and Cybork Bodies really helps Nobs stick around. The Battlewagon you intend to give these guys is slightly illegal, but only because of where you have it. A Battlewagon bought specifically as a transport vehicle cannot have a Killcannon on it, but since your Heavy Support slots are all open it would just go in that slot as a separate unit that happens to be transporting Nobz. One issue you might have, though, is that your Killcannon can only fire when the Wagon moves 6" or less (7", really, due to red paint), which really doesn't benefit your Nobz getting into assault. You might consider dropping the cannon altogether and going with a Deff Rolla. D6 S10 hits in addition to the Nobz piling out is a scary thing for most people, and you can keep them moving the full 13" to get them where they need to be. I know you don't think Orks with regimented weaponry is a very "orky" thing to do, but don't you think even a die-hard fluff fanatic would agree a Nob would be happier with a Power Klaw as opposed to a Big Choppa? I'm pointing towards that last Trukk squad. Those S9 power klaw attacks do much more damage to anything with a proper armor save than a Big Choppa does. With only 12 Boyz and Leadership 7 on them, a Bosspole is practically mandatory to keep them in order. Again, any self-respecting Nob would love to have something to smack his Boyz around with to keep them in line. Just because all the other Nobz are doing it, doesn't mean that this one shouldn't.

Thanks very much kirbinator, you obviously thought about this list. Can I ask you this:
If I have a squad of Nobz, with a painboy and a Bik Mek attached, do I have to buy eavy armour for the painboy and will it matter if the big mek doesnt have eavy armour too?

Well, I certainly like this list more. I think your numbers are slightly off in a couple places. Aether wrote:20 Boyz Nob - Klaw, Bosspole Battlewagon, Grot Rigger, Deff Roller ---285 This squad is 275: 160 for the boyz, 115 for the wagon. Aether wrote:Trukk- Grot Rigger, Wrecking Ball, Ram, Armour Plates - 60
This one is 65, though I'd probably drop the Ram and pick up a Red Paint Job for it. Missing an assault by 1" hurts. Interesting that you chose to take a Mek with KFF instead of the Warboss. It certainly gives that Trukk a little more protection, along with any Trukk you decide to keep in line with the Nobz since the 5+ cover save transfers to any unit within 6" of the Trukk's hull. Just making sure you know, it is a 5+ cover, not 4+. This isn't a bad decision, just means one less scoring unit. Play a little on the defensive side and that's not really an issue. I'd still probably go with Cybork Armor instead of 'eavy armor for the Nobz. The reason being is that anything that cuts through armor also cuts through Feel No Pain (often instant-killing your Nobz/Mek/Painboy), so you're left defenseless against it. Cybork gives you a 1/3 chance to ignore a power weapon or rending hit, instead of simply dying to them. Your Nobz also need a Bosspole. Same reason you need one in the 12-ork squads, there just aren't enough of them for Mob Rule to be helpful and rolling against Ld.7 isn't a safe bet. I'd be slightly worried about your Deffkoptas if you play too aggressively with them. In a squad of 3, if you lose one it's a leadership check on Ld.7, not the best of odds. Be careful with them and give your opponent more important things to shoot at than 3 rokkit shots and they'll be alright.

Aether; Overall I think your list looks good. kirb is completely right about the cybork, it is perhaps the single most useful tool i have in my arsenal at the moment, you will find that staying power added to a squad of Nobs will will allow you to punch huge holes in defensive lines.
One thing does come to mind though, are you planning on having this be a take-all-comers list or do you have specific opponents you know you will be facing off against?

Hi Hankharpoon, thanks for the feedback.
This is meant to be a themed "mad max" or "speed freaks" army - I think having a common theme to an army is lots of fun so its not specifically for any enemy, nor is it tournament style. Having said that, I like the army to be as effective as possible within the realms of the theme. I don't like losing any more than the next guy. So the theme or style comes first, then I ask for advice on how to get the most effective list within that theme. Thats where you guys come in.
I am furiously painting my way to 1500 points (picked up a truck & 3 more bikes today). As soon as I paint all 1500 points worth I move on to the next army (which will be either daemonhunters with a really cool theme or a Biel Tan mechanised eldar army).
Ill post a picture of the army as they get painted.

Themed ork armies are, lets just be honest here, basically the number one reason to play the race (that and all the.... you know... DEATH!! ) I am really looking forward to seeing your modelling progress a 'mad max' style lends itself so naturally to awesome conversions and scratchbuilds, ( http://www.mogosmojodiecastmodels.com.au/prod4242.htm <---interceptor 1/41 model)
looking forward to seeing your progress!

Ok so I have finished the first mob and will post a pic tonight.
I have changed the army. I decided that there will be a real shortage of boyz when the trukks get to the other side - and having seen the new battlewagon model I think they are a must!
Big Mek, Kustom Force Field, Cybork Body, Boss Pole, 1 Assistant - 105
5 Nobz with Cybork Bodies, One Power Klaw, One upgraded to painboy, One painboy assistant - 210
Trukk- Grot Rigger, 'Ard Case, Armour Plates - 60 (Not set on what wargear this one will have but I want it to be the only black trukk in the army and be worth around 60 points max)
20 Boyz
Nob - Klaw, Bosspole
Battlewagon, Grot Rigger, Red Paint Job, Deff Roller
---280
20 Boyz
Nob - Klaw, Bosspole
Battlewagon, Grot Rigger, Red Paint Job
---260
12 Boyz,
Nob - Klaw, Bosspole
Trukk - Grot Rigger, Red Paint Job
---157
12 Boyz,
Nob - Klaw, Bosspole
Trukk - Grot Rigger, Red Paint Job
---157
1 DeffKopta with TL Rokkit Launchers
--- 45
1 Warbuggy
TL Rokkit Launcher
---35
1 Skorcher
---40
6 Warbikes
--- 150
Total - 1499

Just at a quick glance, you don't need a Grot Rigger in the Big Mek's trukk, since the Mek fixes it anyways.

Here are some progress pics - one completed mob of 20 and one of the trukks under construction. If it turns out well I will use it as the boss' truck.

from this view they look great. one tinyproblem on the trukk is that it looks closed top now. you can say that it is cloth though, not metal

True, but I would be glad to have it as non-open topped. But I cant buy that upgrade. Anyway I will just add a handrail or two and say the orks are riding ON top of it
