Being a loyal member of the Imperium I was trying to think of a Force I could use that "counts as" your standard Dual Lash/Oblit/Plague Marine CSM list. So I purchesed the Codex (and proforming the proper rites of cleansing and repentance) and my brain went to work. I had, already, in my head a wonderful vision of using the Dark Angel Veteran squad as the Plague Marines. Painting their robes red with white gear trim and black power armor. The squad champions would be Techmarines, with their "Powerfist" being their servo lifters. I have lots of heavy weapon bits left from Heavy Weapon Teams, so creating obliterators wont be too hard. In a White Dwarf some years ago, they ran an Adeptus Mechanicus army, and for obliterators he used FW Cyclops as base with servitor body mixed with a buncha weapons. It looked good (and i have the WD having around somewhere) So I figure dropping some money in FW is in order.

With all this "figured out", (and even built a few "plague marines" and getting ready to test paint) The final question is.. well... two questions.

1) Rhino transports. The army list has 2. Would it be out of the ordinary to just use a Rhino with no conversion? Or is there something i can do to emphisize its Mechanicus ties?

2) Deamon Princes. The army list has 2, with Wings, a Monsterous Creature stat line, and Lash. So... it has to "fly" or "move really fast", it has to have a CCW that ignores armor saves (FW sentinel power lifter claws?), roughly the same size as a Monsterous Creature and has a ranged weapon that moves units. This is where my brain really gets stuck, and I ask of you Dakka-ites. I've been think of something like a Techmarine wearing a "mobility suit" Something like a 4 legged belt, with the Marine just kinda hanging there. While his tech backpack would have to either be bigger, or maybe part of the suit. Wielding some crusher claw? or Large Tech retreival grabers? Finally, the Lash. What would the Imperium have (or maybe just the techpriests of mars have....) that would move units? Some ranged teleporter locking device? Maybe a large speaker with hypnotic suggestion? or a little black and white spinny hypno disk.....

I have some conversion experience. But not wholesale scratchbuilding. Im hoping I can use alot of pre-existing GW stuff. So far, everything seems doable. Im just stumped on the Deamon Prince conversion...

Questions, feedback, suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

Ok, I myself have been working heavily on theory for an adeptus army and as for the rhino, just use a rhino. They are the mechanicus, they build every machine the imperium has to offer, they can get their hands on some.

And as far as the deamon prince. A CCW that offers no armor save? Power weapon, or something like a DCCW. Lash? I would say an actual lash (Neural Whip kind of thing) segmented metal over a ton of wires, maybe coil it on or something. And for the overall design, I would say something that looks like a mix between a wraithlord and a dreadnought, with a Chaos raptor looking jump pack on the back. Just my 3 cents.

Well for the rhino I would just make sure to get the Mechanicus symbols on every face maybe some fancy gadgetry for show. Your counts as DP, I agree with the post above. Something between Dread and Wraithlord with a jump pack. Other than that, great idea and I can't wait to see what you come up with, might even have to steal some of your ideas

I have always thought about converting something like a tank/ hovercraft thing to play the deamon in a list like that.

Hello,

Sounds cool! I like the idea.

My thoughts.

1. Bare Rhinos would work without a problem. If you wanted to "adepticusify" them you could add a couple of servo cranes to the top or the back. They don't need to have any in game purpose, but would look cool if done well.

2. I would think an AM ancient would be perfect for that - essentially an ancient cyborg with very little human left with a marine jump pack, special custom tractor beam weapon (lash) and a massive power fist.

I like the idea of the legs as well - like the Spiderman 2 or 3 guy. That Would be possibly tough to model convincingly - perhaps you could get a Marvel model of him to model the legs:

You mean Doc. Octopus? One of the biggest spiderman villains? Yeah, that could definately work, but it doesm't seem ADmech enough to work for me.

I was thinking of using just the arms of the figure - and connecting it to a techmarine or some other marine.

Would work well I think...

  • Jump pack movement : tick

  • Monstrous creature : tick

  • Mount a "tractor beam" : tick

  • Power weapon etc : tick

  • Could cover all bases.

oooh. Something along the lines of Doc Oc would be really neat. Wouldnt need to model a belt, but just create a huge TechPriest servo backpack. 1 Arm for "tractor beam" (that would be a better option then mobile Teleport lock), 1 arm with a heavy duty power grabber, and 4 others in a walking/crawling pose. Add in the various sensor devices (the DP has a WS of 7, and 4 Attack, maybe the backpack does self targeting)
Or even have the backpack have a shoulder mounted, tech eye guided tractor beam, and just add 6 legs, each capable of walking / grabbing. Even I can see how making those arms would be pretty easy. A wire inside, with wire coiled around it. One model could be made in a "walking" pose, and the other in a standing battle pose.... mmmm. Great brain kick guys! Thanks.

Adding a grappling claw to the Rhino's would fit. Make them stand a lil bit out from your average Space Marine Rhino. Some of the background I drew up was that this is a Technology retrieval unit. They care not of the plans of generals and designs of man. They only care about the capture and study of rare Tech. Hence all the Techpriests, and the gun-toten adepts. Plus, being devoted to their Machine God, they have alot of the same beliefs as the Iron Hands SM's. As in they relish the removal of flesh and replacement of machine. So there's why these guys have the Plague Marine Feel no pain rule. Their extra Toughness and 4+ FNP comes from their mechanical replacements. (which is mostly hidden by their cloaks, yay creative modeling!)

Will have to get some more Techpriests on order. Start futzing with some super Techpriest battle retreval servo harness.... Thanks for the wonderful ideas. Keep em come'n

I'd try to incorporate a 'tractor/repulser beam' (sp) gun for the lash. I thought that mounting him in a penetient engine type setup with a huge jetpack and maybe smaller jets on the legs would work well. Kinda like a cross between the fighting walkers in the last matrix movie and tau crisis suits. You could mount the beam gun in one hand and a CCW in the other.

The Doc Oc Techmarine thing is a little funky...

Howabout creating a "Knight" instead? It's like a mini-Titan, roughly the size of a Monstrous Creature. Walks on two legs, carries a large power-weapon called a War-blade, and it can stride over the battle-field at incredible speeds.

As for the lash, just add on a grapler cable thing to the shoulder. The description in the Horus Heresy book Mechanicum says that they're tall and they have skull-shaped cockpit faceplates... So take it from there!

Hum, I googled Knight Titan, and got a pic of a squad of Epic scale Knight Titans... they seem a bit big. A Daemon Prince isn't THAT big. Sure, its bigger then a man, and slightly larger then a Dread. But the epic pic seems to put Knights somewhere in the Baneblade on end size.... Thinking thats a might tall. (and a heck of a conversion...)

Knight Titans are about 8 or 9 inches tall in 40k scale. the FW Bloodthirster is the same height as one, if not a tad taller.

Knights are 9 inches, 10 if sttod straight going from experience and descriptions in HH. However weapons differ depending on where you read, 40K rules would put them comparable to a tank, whereas some of the fluff puts them with bigger guns.

As for the rhino, for mine I went with adding symbols and just a few extra pipes to the roof. It is STC after all but at the same time does need something to sit nicly in the army. You can't really have a fully converted army with a bog standard rhino sat in the middle.

Excellent. In the newest edition of Firebase magazine (you can find it on Warseer.com), there's a whole article about a guy who converted an entire AdMech army. Probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen. So check it out for some ideas!

Also, if you did go for Knights, you could probably use the Sentinel legs. Maybe even the body (with some modifications) could be used for the cockpit...

    Can't wait for those pics!

For your D Prince problem, try converting that Sister's of Battle Penitent Engine. Cut out the sister and work in a tech marine maybe, drop the assault attachments and add more "tool" weapons. Could look really cool, would give you the height and 4 Wound look you need for a D Prince. Lash could easily be some tractor beam.

I like the idea of your army a lot. Let's see it built!

I think the Penitent Engine would be a nice start. Open, mechanical, big. The more I see pic's of Knights the more I'm convinced its just too big. (In the 5th ed world of true LoS, I would rather not have a massive target like that.) Missing shoulder pads for my Adeptus Marines... as the Dark Angel Veteran Pack all have too Dark Angel specific markings on them (well.. it IS supposed to be for Dark Angels.....) Need to finish off his arms and my test model will be done. Looks good. Need to get my gear painting more uniform, but I like it. Pics soon to follow.

Arms are tack'd into place, going to buy a SM tactical squad kit for extra bits and plain shoulder guards. Need to touch up my white gear markings.... Need to figure out an even pattern that looks good. Otherwise, Im ready to pump out 17 more of these. <Edit> Hum, the pics show up much brighter then IRL... The red is no where that bright. Its a very subdued red acually... =/ Very Blood Raven tone I think... huh, maybe no flash next time <Edit>

Picked up a Space Marine Tactical Box yesterday, for shoulders, packs, and guns. Also put on order 2 penitent engines, 6 Cyclops', 1 more box of Dark Angel Veterans, and the Techmarine with Servitors box. Now, to pump out the AM "plague marines" while my LHS orders my bits. Picked up a thunderfire cannon set too. Lots of metal :( but might be able to use some of the bits for extra gear on the Rhino's. The techmarine itself will probably be crafted into the penitent engine. Oh, was viewing the GW website and found that perhaps for the squads, I should use a IG techpriest. The have the servo arm (powerfist) and a wearing just a lil bit of cloak (to tie them to the rest of the cloak wearing squad). Problem is.. they're metal, and come in two poses. Need three total.. Maybe the one squad without a rhino gets a better armored leader (as he also would have 1 less "bodyguard") Anyway. Pics of squads of Adeptus Mechanicus minions soon to follow.

@Druidic: Thanks. This will be my first conversion army, so hoping it comes out okay, and kicks some butt!

Well, the boxes of Techpriest Engiseer's came in. As well as the Techpriest w/ Servitors AND the other 4 boxes of Dark Angel Veteran squads I needed. So, production on the first two squads is underway. The first 5 "Plague Marine" Adeptus have a basecoat on em. Was planning on primering today, but snow outside is putting a damper on that :(

There's the first squad of 7. The guns havent been added. As I want to get to their chest for all the gear stripes I'll have to do.

Another view, mm, didnt come out as good.

Here's squad 2. Sigh, need a tripod or something, pics are a bit fuzzy....

Now to get them painted. Cant wait to see how these engineseer's look painted and in among the troops. Think they'll stand out, but match with the hoods...

Where did you score that pic? Some pretty neat ideas. Using a Sentinel Leg in there i see. Also.. Im going to have to start thinking how to paint adeptus mechanicus symbols....

Backpacks for the Techpriests. Used the larger servo arms from the Thunderfire Techpriest box and Techpriest w/ Servitors box.
As both of them will be meshed into a pentinet engine (Demon Prince)
Pushed greenstuff into the sockets to hold it together, as the holes were bigger then the nub provided.

Well, besides 3 Forgeworld Cyclops models still in order limbo I've got all my bits for a 1850 Adeptus Mechanicus list. Pics to be posted soon, but here's a lil word taste of the things that have happened between my last post.

    * The two pentient engines arrived. Cleaned em up, and still working on how to get the whole thing to stay together.
    * 6 Cyclops from FW arrived, and those combined with my Heavy Weapon bit box + Servitors = Obliterators
    * 3 Rhino's made, with some slight conversions, nothing huge. Some IG spotlight action going on.
    * Materials for making my own decals ordered and waiting on. Go figure, no one makes Adeptus Mechanicus decals.... bums!
    * The painting and putting together of more troops. Love the way these robed boys look. Have 2/3's the Troops painted, but need to attach arms & guns.
    * Have plascard waiting for my attempt to add a techmarine in the pentient engine instead of the metal hunk that comes with the kit.
    * Begged a bunch of Space Marine tank sprues from the local gaming buddies and have something like 19 adeptus mechanicus shoulder pads.

Having a few days off from work to come, might be able to push out some painted figs and get this army well underway.

    Pics soon to follow.
