Adepticon 2009 Tournament Circuit Invitational
So I qualified for the Invitational last year by the Baltimore GT, and I like to play in it because you get to play against some of the best players in the country.
On to the batreps!
My Army:
I decided not to take a hard-core army, and brought my favorite army the Thousand Sons. I have not played the army since early 4th edition and it shows. I took a list similar to what I played in 3rd edition to see how it would fair.
HQ
Chaos Sorcerer: Bolt of Change, Disc of Tzeentch, Personal Icon, Warptime, Mark of Tzeentch.
Demon Prince: Wings, Mark of Tzeentch, Warptime, Winds of Chaos.
Elites
9 Chaos Terminators: Chain Fist, Power Fist, Combi-Melta x3, Reaper Auto-cannons x2, Icon of Tzeentch
Aspiring Terminator Champion: Lighting Claws x2
Troops
7 Thousand Sons Marines[b]
[b]Aspiring Sorcerer: Melta Bombs, Warptime
8 Thousand Sons Marines[b]
[b]Aspiring Sorcerer: Melta Bombs, Warptime
Rhino Combi-Flamer
Heavy Support
Predator: TL Lascannon, 2 Lascannon Sponsons, Demonic Possession
Land Raider
I will give extensive comments about my list and each of the unit’s performance at the end of game #3s battle report.
Game #1
I find myself matched up against Paul M. whom I played on Friday when he had his Nob Bikers and Big Mek Stompa. Now I face his Nob Bikers without the Stompa.
Opponent’s army
[HQ]
Warboss: Power Klaw, Shoota/Skorcha Kombi-weapon, Attack Squig, Bosspole, Cybork Body, Warbike
Warboss: Power Klaw, Slugga Kombi-weapon, Attack Squig, Bosspole, Cybork Body, Warbike
Elite
13 Kommandos: Burna x2,
Snikrot
Troops
Nobz: Big Choppa x2, Choppa X5, Power Klaw x2, Slugga x2, Shoota/Rokkit Kombi-weapon x1, Shoota/Skorcha Kombi-weapon x1, TL Shoota x1, Ammo Runt x1, Bosspole x1, Cybork body x1, Waaagh banner x1
Painboy: ‘Urty Syringe, Dok’s tools, Grot orderly, Warbike
Nobz: Big Choppa x2, Choppa X5, Power Klaw x2, Slugga x2, Shoota/Rokkit Kombi-weapon x1, Shoota/Skorcha Kombi-weapon x1, TL Shoota x1, Ammo Runt x1, Bosspole x1, Cybork body x1, Waaagh banner x1
Painboy: ‘Urty Syringe, Dok’s tools, Grot orderly, Warbike
Deployment: Pitched Battle (12” in from long table edge)
Special Rules: Infiltrate, Deep Strike, Reserves
Primary Objective: Annihilation (Kill Points). Win=20, Draw=10, Loss=0
Secondary Objective: Victory Points (250 points more than your opponent). Win=15, Draw=7, Loss=0
Tertiary Objective: Eliminate all of your opponent’s troop choices. Win=10, Loss=0
Tactical Bonuses:
+1 If your opponent has no Fast Attack choices
+1 If your opponent has no Heavy Support choices
+1 If your opponent has no Elite choices
Strategy: This is where I say what my tactic is. I don't have a plan, so I will just retreat and try to shoot him before he assaults.
Turn #1
Orks Turn #1
He moves up. He shoots at my terminators and his shooting is unfortunately very effective.
Thousand Sons Turn #1
I shoot at him some and I do not do much. That Inv save+ FNP is hard to get through, and then the few wounds get scattered around.
Turn #2
Orks Turn #2
He moves up some more. He gets Snitrot and his band of merry men and he again goes after my Sorcerer like he did in the Gladiator but he also charges my Demon Prince. The difference is that he did not get lucky this time, and my HQs beat the crap out of Snitrot and they ran him down, but not before they did a few wounds.
Thousand Sons Turn #2
Well, he is pretty close, so I make my move. He is in perfect position for WoC so I move my HQs up and unload on them. I drive my Land Raider up and rapid fire as well. After that I do not do all that much with his inv save, and toughness 5. Then I move my HQ in for the kill. My HQs were wounded up by snitrot and they are killed by the Nob Bikers.
Turn #3
Orks Turn #3
He charges me with his bikes and starts to grind me down.
Thousand Sons Turn #3
Still grinding.
Turn #4
Orks Turn #4
I am getting beaten. It is almost over.
Thousand Sons Turn #4
By this time it is all over but the shouting.
Turn #5
Orks Turn #5
Thousand Sons Turn #5
We call the game here. The only thing I had left was a predator on the other end of the board that he could not get to.
He gets all of the Victory points, and I only get 3 bonus points.
Summary:
At the bottom of turn #2 is where I made my mistake. I should have charged in with my Thousand Sons marines to hold the nob bikers in place so they do not pile in on my HQs. The problem was that I played this army on Friday and the Thousand Sons losses hurt me with combat resolution. In that game though I only assaulted with my Demon Prince, and I rolled very bad with my saves. In this game I was hitting him with 2 HQs going at the Nobs with Warptime (plus the TS Sorcerer with Warptime), and I could have done a lot more casualties and I think I would have won combat. Not only that, but he would have had to counter charge the next round, and my terminators then would have charged them. I might have won, I might not have, but in hindsight, assaulting with the TS Marines was the way to go.
As a side note I was running my DP with only strength 5 the whole weekend and if I knew that he was strength 6 would have been a huge help.

Adepticon 2009 Tournament Circuit Invitational
Game #2
After getting 0 points I am sure that I am now going to play a nice and fluffy army where I have a chance! Then I look at what I am going to play against and see that I am going against 2 Lash Princes. This is an example of how tough the Invitationals armies are.
I end up playing Jeff M(?) from Green Bay and he was short on lists so I have to do it from memory.
Opponents army
HQ
Demon Prince: Mark of Slaanesh, Wings, Lash of Submission
Demon Prince: Mark of Slannesh, Wings, Lash of Submission
Greater Demon
Troops
Thousand Sons Marines
Aspiring Sorcerer
Rhino
Khorne Berserkers
Rhino
Noise Marines
Plague Marines
Rhino
Plague Marines
Rhino
Although he has 2 Lash Princes, it is still not all that hard of a list, or at least as hard as it could be. I think I might have a chance.
Deployment: Modified Dawn of War (2 troop units+1 HQ Unit). What that means is that a rhinos/transports counted as a unit, not for a troop or HQ selection.
Special Rules: Deep Strike, Reserves, Night Fights (Turn 1 only)
Primary Objective: Unplanned Assault. At the beginning of turn #4 roll to find out the primary objective. A roll of
1-2=Table Quarters. Uncontested scoring units
3-4=Seize Ground. Capture terrain elements. You need a scoring unit touching a terrain feature.
5-6=Field of Battle. Have the most scoring units wholly within 12” of the center of the table. The objective can’t be contested, just add up the scoring units.
Win=20 points, Draw=10 Points, Loss=0 Points
Secondary Objective: The player must score 500 more victory points than their opponent. Win=15 points, Draw=7 Points, Loss=0 Points
Tertiary Objective: Eliminate all of you opponents HQ choices. Win=10 points, Loss=0 Points
Tactical Bonuses:
+1 Point if your most expensive HQ unit is not fleeting or dead at the end of the game.
+1 Point if your most expensive Unit is not fleeting or dead at the end of the game.
+1 if you have more scoring units left at the end of the game than your opponent.
The set up:
He starts with a rhino and a DP, and I start with a Rhino and Sorcerer.
Wide view
Turn #1
Thousand Sons Turn #1
I move on and immobilize his rhino that started on the board.
(no pic)
Chaos Space Marines Turn #1
He moves on.
Turn #2
Thousand Sons Turn #2
I pop a couple of his rhinos and slow down his advance.
(No pic)
Chaos Space Marines Turn #2
He lashes my Terminators closer to him. He then assaults them with his Demon Prince with expected results of getting his DP killed. He made the mistake of thinking that he could also assault with his plague marines, but he forgot that he ran them.
Turn #3
Thousand Sons Turn #3
I assault his plague marines with my Terminators.
(No Pic)
Chaos Space Marines Turn #3
He hops over the Terminator combat with his DP and makes for my army.
(No Pic)
Turn #4
We roll for the objective and get Field of Battle (Most scoring units within 12” of the center of the table).
Thousand Sons Turn #4
I move up my DP to get it closer to help counter his Demon Prince. I disembark my Thousand Sons squad and rapid fire his Demon Prince and I roll bad and just make it angry.
Chaos Space Marines Turn #4
To counter my Demon Prince he moves his rhino up and shoots up with a squad of plague marines. He assaults my Thousand Sons Squad with his Demon Prince, and to make things worse. the Aspiring Sorcerer gets a "Perils of the warp" for his warptime and dies. That means they are in a combat that they never can win, and I need to do something because I need all the troops that I can get. He gets his demon in and he throws it at my terminators along with a squad of berzerkers.
Turn #5
Thousand Sons Turn #5
Things are not going well. I am starting to lose all of my combats. The Terminators are getting worn down, the Demon Prince is beating my Thousand Sons and I assaulted his Plague Marines with my Demon Prince and Sorcerer and I kill a lot of them, but my sorcerer eats a powerfist.
Chaos Space Marines Turn #5
I am still locked into a combats. My Terminators finally lose. My Demon Prince finally kills the last of the plague marines.
Turn #6
Thousand Sons Turn #6
I move my Demon Prince up to engage his Demon Prince in a last ditch effort to save the last of my Thousand Son. The problem is that with the mark of Slaanesh not only give you access to the Lash, but it has the side effect of give the DP an Inititve of 6. He hacks down my wounded DP before he gets to swing.
(No Pic)
Chaos Space Marines Turn #6
He just finished up by moving closer to the objective.
End of Game
He has his noise marines and his Thousand Sons (in the blue rhino). I have my last squad of Thousand Sons. Primary=Loss
Secondary=Draw
Tertiary=Loss
+0 Bonus Points
Wow 0-2. I have not done that bad at a RTT in a very long time.

Adepticon 2009 Tournament Circuit Invitational
Game #3
Blackmoor vs. Greg “Inquisitor Malice” Sparks II
Malice at the Adepticon Palace!!!
The funny thing is that I get crushed by a Nob biker army, then I get beat by a dual lash list, and my reward is that I get Greg Sparks who is one of the best players in the country.
I last played Greg 2 years ago at the LA Gamesday RTT. We ended up getting a tie, and I almost beat him. I was joking around with his teammates earlier that in a solo game I have never lost to someone from Toledo, and with my bad army, I was afraid that my tying streak was on the line. I know that Greg is a very good player, and he has a hard army, so I am going to be in a world of hurt. Greg also makes my Adepticon complete by me playing all of the members of Team Toledo this year. I played Mike M. at the Gladiator, John and Brad at the Team Tournament, and now Greg at the Invitational.
Greg’s army
HQ
Abaddon the Despoiler
Chaos Sorcerer: Melta Bombs, Jump Pack, Lash of Submission, Mark of Slaanesh
Troops
15 Noise Marines: Sonic Blaster x15
7 Khorne Berzerkers:
1 Skull Champion: Power Fist
11 Lesser Demons
Heavy Support
3 Obliterators
3 Obliterators
1 Land Raider: Extra armor
Thoughts: This army is rough for me. I will be very hard pressed to kill his heavy support. I really do not have the firepower to really hurt him. I can’t even beat him in assault with my terminators because he has Abaddon as a counter-assault unit and he is a butt kicker. I need to figure something out.
Deployment: Spearhead
Special Rules: Infiltrate, Reserves, Deep Strike
Primary Objective: Objective Markers (4). Win=20, Draw=10, Loss=0
Secondary Objective: Score 750 more victory points. Win=15, Draw=7, Loss=0
Tertiary Objective: Control the table. You must have one unit wholly in every standard table quarter. Win=10, Loss=0
Tactical Bonuses:
+1 Point if your opponent controlled none of the primary objectives.
+1 Point If your opponent’s highest point HQ unit is dead.
+1 If your opponent has fewer than 10 units left at the end of the game.
Turn #1
Chaos Space Marines Turn #1
He is pretty cautious and advanaces slowly. He unloads on my rhino killing it.
(No Pic) Not many pics this battle because I wanted to win and that took my attention.
Thousand Sons Turn #1
I shoot my Land Raider at his oblits and do nothing, and my Predator at his land raider and do nothing.
Turn #2
Chaos Space Marines Turn #2
He moves a little closer and shoots the turret off of my predator. He also gets his demons and he uses them for a screen since all of my weapons are AP3 or better.
Thousand Sons Turn #2
I sit back and hide. Operation: "I don't know what to do" is well under way. I am shooting at his oblits and his Land Raider and so far all I have done is shoot off a Lascannon of the LR. I am losing the shooting war, and it is not looking pretty.
Turn #3
Chaos Space Marines Turn #3
He moves up a bit more and unloads all of those Noise Marine on my Thousand Sons. He does enough wounds that I have to put one on the Aspiring Sorcerer and he ends up dying! This is not looking good.
Thousand Sons Turn #3
I start to think (which can be dangerous) and I come up with a plan. This is an objective based mission right? So all I have to do is kill his 3 troops, and I am sitting pretty. His Berserkers are in the Land Raider, so I can't touch them. But he has his Noise Marines and his Demons out there, so let's get to killin!
My Terminators come on and I unload on the Noise Marines killing a few, my Thousand Sons squad moves up and unloads killing a few more, and now that they are softened up, I hit them with my Demon Prince. I kill a lot of them and I am making some progress.
Turn #4
Chaos Space Marines Turn #4
He can't do much, but he retreats his demons back a ways. He gets out his berzerkers and gets ready to charge my terminators, but not before his Oblits get to shooting. The oblits rain down TL plasma guns on them, and I end up making a few 4+ inv saves, so I still have quite a few terminators left. The bad thing is that he has committed to charging them with the Berzerkers, and he either has to charge or be charged, so he heads in. My terminators mostly shrug of the attacks with their 2+ save, and then they butcher them with return power weapon attacks. My DP is still alive and killing the last of the Noise Marines and is still able to survive against Abaddon and his sorcerer. Of course Abaddon helps out by rolling a "1" for his demon weapon and takes a wound, and his sorcerer being unable to wound.
After the game I told Greg he might have use the Plasma Cannons to shoot the terminators, since I was balled up after deepstriking, but who know how that would have gone.
Thousand Sons Turn #4
I have him down to 1 scoring unit (Demons) and I am feeling much better about this game. I need to do something about his sorcerer though because I can't have a Lash running around loose to pull me off objectives, bunch me up for plasma cannon shots, and other nastiness. I send my Sorcerer into the assault just to assassinate his sorcerer, and he does, but not before Abaddon kills my Demon Prince.
Here is where I might have made my mistake. Instead of charging his oblits, and seek the safety from shooting in assault, I am locked into killing all of his troops like a laser. So I shoot at his demons with my Terminators and they end up going to ground and I kill only one or two.
Turn #5
Chaos Space Marines Turn #5
He unloads on my Terminators with some more plasma and he rolls better, and I roll worse for my saves and he wipes them out. Abaddon tries to kill my little sorcerer and rolls another "1" for his demon weapon and takes a wound. My sorcerer pokes Abaddon with his force weapon and does another wound. Abaddon loses combat, and then takes a wound from "No Retreat" and falls over dead!!!
Thousand Sons Turn #5
Remember when I said that I was locked on to his troops like a laser? My Sorcerer smells demon blood and goes after them! I assault (and I pull him within 3" of an objective) but these demons are harder to kill than Abaddon and they do not go easily.
We roll and the game ends.
End Game
He has one objective and I have one=Draw for the Primary.
I had my other Thousand Sons squad heading for the second objective, but without the sorcerer I was moving at only 1d6" a turn and moving slow.
Secondary no one has 750+ More Victory points=Draw
Neither of us has the Tertiary=Draw
Tactical Bonuses:
Neither get:
+1 Point if your opponent controlled none of the primary objectives.
I get:
+1 Point If your opponent’s highest point HQ unit is dead.
We both get:
+1 If your opponent has fewer than 10 units left at the end of the game.
So I end up with another Draw against the Toledo Crew.

Here is the analysis of my list.
HQ
Chaos Sorcerer: Bolt of Change, Disc of Tzeentch, Personal Icon, Warptime, Mark of Tzeentch.
This unit was not as good as his larger brother. One of the big problems was that I was mostly a mech army, and without the terminators on the ground (and they were normally Deep struck) he had no protection, so I had to hide him out of LOS. That meant that I was not using the BoC that much. With the disk he was really tooled up for assault with 6 attacks on the charge and Warptime. In hindsight I should have also given him Winds of Chaos. The WoC+Warptime combo is a powerful alpha strike attack that can put a hurting all kinds of armies, and then he can go nuts will all of those attacks in assault. I will next time put him in with some non-mech CSM and he will do a lot better. 6 Attack on the charge with re-rolling hits and wounds is very nice.
Demon Prince: Wings, Mark of Tzeentch, Warptime, Winds of Chaos.
This unit worked as intended. He was a big scary monster that put a hurting on things. The funny thing was that I was using him as strength 5 the whole weekend until game #2 on Sunday. If I know that he had strength 6, he could have done a lot more damage to all of those Nob Bikers.
A downside to both of my HQs was that I was often facing Lash HQs. Besides the obvious downside of facing the lash was that these HQs also had MoS and I6 and went before me, so I could not use my HQs to take out my opponents HQs.
Elites
9 Chaos Terminators: Chain Fist, Power Fist, Combi-Melta x3, Reaper Auto-cannons x2, Icon of Tzeentch
Aspiring Terminator Champion: Lighting Claws x2
Although durable, and having a lot of power weapon attacks, they were very, very expensive. Reaper Auto-cannons were not very good for the points, and the combi-meltas were hard to use as well. I wish they had better shooting for that point cost.
Troops
7 Thousand Sons Marines
Aspiring Sorcerer: Melta Bombs, Warptime
8 Thousand Sons Marines
Aspiring Sorcerer: Melta Bombs, Warptime
Rhino Combi-Flamer
I debated what psychic power to use with my Thousand Sons. I decided that the cheap doombolt or the Winds of Chaos template was not worth it, and since they are going to end up in combat, with their durability I wanted them to fight at least ok. There were still a lot of problems. I get perils of the warp and lose the sorcerer, I was screwed. This unit would be a lot better if the sorcerer had access to multiple psychic powers.
Also 2 troop units are just too few. If I were to do it over again I would take some CSM or some more Thousand Sons.
Heavy Support
Predator: TL Lascannon, 2 Lascannon Sponsons, Demonic Possession
What a waste of points. First off, Demonic Possession should be free. Heck as a penalty they get BS3, and that is enough of a cost. This thing came out to 185 points, and I would be better off paying 35 more points and getting another Land Raider.
Land Raider
What can I say? These are good units in 5th edition, and everyone is using them.
I kind of wished I had my Dreadnought, He is not to many points, and in the gladiator he took all kinds of shooting and kept on ticking. Dreadnought have many uses and they are the last thing a units of Bloodcrushers and a few other units wants to see.
I went 0-2-1 with this list, but I went up against Nob Bikers, and Chaos Lash armies, so my record is to be expected. If I had a chance to playtest my 3rd edition Thousand Sons for 5 edition I could have tuned them up a bit and done much better, but I was kind of going in blind and learning on the fly.

I feel your pain about the invitational, I also got thrashed (I was, in fact, last). Very fierce tournament, lots of fun.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Thanks for posting all the reports. Bummer to read about your Demon Prince strength issue. I'm sure it made a huge difference against T5 Nob Bikers.
Also, props to you for not using an internet styled list. You didn't fare well, but I'm sure with more playtesting and tweaking the Thousand Sons, it can be a competitive army. Just stick with it and see how it works.
Again, thanks for all the write ups.

I would think that your 4+ inv would have been enough to survive a Lash Prince's attacks? Two Warptime + Wind DP's would have been awesome for you, and the lash didn't really serve you all that well in the gladiator. The Tzeentch DP is solid.

yeah,
I'm Respecting your List, I'm sure it was a breath of fresh Air!
I wonder would you have performed better with two squads of 5 terminators?
That way you could have used the LR as a assault boat... and hide from the Nobs.
The preditor seemed to under Perform, did possessions BS3 hurt?
I figure it's in your list to draw some fire from the LR and so that you offer up more than one big target?
Thanx for the great battle reports, the were a great read.

Now I think 5 terminators with a heavy flamer is the way to go. I wanted to take the Icon of Tzeentch though, and that meant that it would be more cost effective to take 10 terminators than 2 squads of 5.
The predator seemed to under Perform, did possessions BS3 hurt?
Yes, it certainly did. Also trying to keep it obscured hurt the number of shots, and I lost so much fire power when it moved, I was reluctant to move it. Next time I might try it with just the TL Lascannon, or Lascannon/ HB sponsons.
I figure it's in your list to draw some fire from the LR and so that you offer up more than one big target?
My list hurts for anti-tank, so that is why it is there. But in truth, it was rarely shot at because it is not too much of a threat.
It was cool to see good battles between top tier players. They looked a bit fierce but I'm sure they were fun!(?)
Yes they were a lot of fun. I normally I take very competitive lists because I want to win. This year I took a fun list with no expectation of winning and I enjoyed myself.

You gonna work on tuning 1ksons for fifth edition? I think that they have some promise.
I am on the fence as to my summer project for next years tournament season.
I will either do Space Wolves, or Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons.

Don't rumours have the wolves being redone sometime soon? Might want to hold off on them.

I applaud you for not doing a stupid lash or nob biker list. I'm glad to see people playing to play rather than winning at all costs, even in such a big tournament.

Thanks for taking the time to write up all the battle reports, they were all a very good read.
I've been on the fence with thousand sons since the new chaos book came out. The loss of the two wounds and their flamer anti-personnel daemons really hurt.
I've had them on the back burner while I've been playing with the new daemons and have been pondering some lists with them but haven't come up with much that I like.
I keep coming back to land raiders as delivery platforms. A sorcerer hq with warptime and breath in a squad with the squad sorcerer having breath puts some serious smack down on a squad. Not to mention the additional bolter shots. And then if something is left you get to charge .

I know, but the core units/vehicles will not change.
The Space Wolves gives me the better chance to win than the Thousand Sons.

Thousand Sons really got a hella boost in this edition. The 4+ inv save, relentless for 24" bolter goodness all the time, AP3, obviously, and warptime. A tzeentch DP with warptime, wind and wings is a terror, and an aspiring sorcerer kitted out the same way is ridiculous. Couple that with more survivable rhinos, and you've got a recipe for drive by win.

Look, I get that it is time consuming and expensive to put terrain on 100+ tables, but seriously:
This is a 40K table? How can you play a game on a table so devoid of terrain?

The terrain was really good for the most part.
In the tournaments defense, that is only a 2' gap in the middle of the table. There was a lot more terrain to the left and the right. The problem is that the terrain gets moved around a lot from game to game because everyone has to have a huge display board that they put their army on at that end of the game, and we just did not bother to put the terrain all the way back to where is should have been.

Very nice battle report. It is somewhat comforting to see a squishy army fare pretty well against 3 pretty mean lists
