Paint blue over black as you need a undercoat any way.

I thought you said the problem is your bro had painted them black, if your doing ultramarines, and doing a entire chapter then shouldn't they all be blue? Which in any case you can paint over black. If part of your models are blue and you haven't got any more blue paint go buy some more. Problem solved.

If I'm misunderstanding what your saying, as your not really very clear, then I play with Imperial Fists and Blood Angels

Ahha gotcha.

Well, the chapter you choose is a very personal choice. There are many colours that work well with a black undercoat so you havent realy blocked yourself too much there.

Take a look at this 'little' list of chapters and pick one that you like the look of.

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/List_of_Space_Marine_Chapters

of course you could always design your own chapter, there is a great tool for this here:-

If you are looking for a chapter that isn't really prevalent, and is based around a black basing, you are more than welcome to use the Saints of Revelation. I have an article with some pics and a little bit of why I made them, or you can check out my gallery for ideas, if you like them.

The models pictured are still a little WIP, but I hope to have the finished pics up by the end of the weekend.

Like I said, if you like them, by all means, run with them

Well, there are a lot of chapters out there. I have found that half and half chapters look a little odd when there's just one of them, but they tend to look outstanding as a full force. For example:

The Eagle Warriors

or the Storm Lords.

(by the way, all of the above minis were painted over a black undercoat)

As for other chapters, I am personally partial to the Salamanders also (with the flame decorations here and there, and maybe some scale cloaks as conversions). Also, the Relictors have some pretty outstanding fluff for them (they wear grey, their symbol is a skull in profile, and they often use deamon weapons and chaos artifacts).

The more import question I have is, since you say your limited on paints, "what paints do you have?" Example, if you just have white, then yes BT is they way to go. But if you tell us what's at your disposal we can tell you what schemes are possible with the paints at hand.

wolves have their own entire range of models, if you REALLY want to do space wolves, save up and wait in my opinion OR if your too impatient just do "counts as" spaces wolves who are painted the space wolves them but you use the space marine codex (i believe thats allowed).

Id ask you waht paints DO you have. If you dont tell anyone then they are really wasting time spitting out ideas. Black tho, you could do blue on that black undercoat, itll be darker, there for you can make the Crimson Fists. They are cool looking. Lighter colors show up fine on black.

well i have shadow grey, space wolves grey, inyaden darksun, golden yellow, sunburst yellow, chaos black, scab red, blood red, whatever the foundation orange is, boltgun metal, mithril silver, most of the green shades and a few more, so, thats about it I think, If that helps.

I'd recommend the Salamanders or Crimson Fists. If I could do a second SM army it'd be the Salamanders, they have a cool paint scheme and a pretty cool special character in the most recent SM codex, which I believe you have. And with your shades of green over the black undercoat you can paint them easily too. Crimson fists just have a cool color scheme I think.

As for specific chapters with their own extensive set of rules and units, it's basically preference. I think a lot of your forces will largely be (barring chapter upgrades/bonuses) generic space marine units, with a select few being chapter specific. One notable exception I think is the Black Templars (and, to a lesser extent, the Space Wolves), but don't quote me on that. An example is my Dark Angels army - I am using a DA commander, and a Terminator Command squad. Other than that, points- and upgrades-wise my army is essentially a generic space marine army. A crusader, a venerable dread, a rhino, etc.

Use your foundation orange first, then paint yellow over that. The foundation paint has a lot of pigment, so that should cover it well enough.

For when you finish your first model:
