Hey all, I decided I needed a few combimeltas for my Crimson Fists sternguard so took a look around for some in plastic but all I could find was the one in the commander box. Well, I don't really need 10 commanders but after looking at it I figured out how GW "kitbashed" their own models to make it. It is pretty easy, it just takes a little bit of time and patience in cutting.

First up, the tools - clipper, exacto, meltagun, bolter (and plastic glue, not pictured):

I like to start with smoothing the top the top of the bolter. All that is really necessary is cut/scrape the raised part off the top of the bolter (the gun sight and the ridge) and also clip the top little bit of plastic above the barrel. The gun should look like this:

The most complex "surgery" here is with the meltagun. If you look closely at the meltagun you will see there is a panel line that runs through to about a millimeter below the nozzle that the melta comes out. Don't cut into the tank but shave off the two little hoses that go from the tank into the gun, though. You should have shaved the bottom of the gun all the way of to the bottom of that tank like so (there are a couple of pics from different angles):

and

and

Once you have these done it is a simple matter to line the top of the bolter with plastic glue and seat the meltagun bit on top leaving you with something that looks like this:

Anyway, it isn't too difficult to do, but it is a bit time consuming - the end result is really great looking, though.

Wow, that is really good. You should have this moved to the tutorial section and have it made a part of the contest. I must say as well, this is much better than the standard "lob off the round end of the melta and glue it to the bolter" job that most people do (myself included). Great job.

Oh, that is a good idea, thanks. I will see if I can get it moved.

Thanks for the kind words!

Sweet looking over under combi-melta! Of course, I am not sure if I can forgive you for destroying and perfectly functional, and "1 per box", meltagun.

My combined need for melta-guns across both CSM and Renegade is insane and the thought of butchering one for a lesser-breed combi-weapon rates right up there with the Heresy .

Definitely something to try out once the 30+ other meltas are done Though I guess, in some twisted way, you are appeasing Tzeetch...

Sweet. I need like 10+ of these for my Sternguard. This is a lifesaver.

Think it will work with metal Meltaguns?

Great tutorial! Will definitely keep this one for a reference.

Do you know if this same thing would work on metal models with bolters? Are the plastic bolters the same size?

I will be using this for my Nurgle Army XD because I love Meltas and so does Death Guard. I actually have a Warpjumping lord with a Powerfist Melta, did kind of what marneus calgar ha, just with a Melta Gun and one arm, the other Arm is a Power Ax... he is a tank killer XD

Thanks for the Tutorial it is very helpful ^_^

Much like Loricatus, I would love to see a similar posting on how to do other Combi-weapons, in particular the combi flamer.

Looks good, but how can you slaughter a perfectly good meltagtun?
Oh well, i still like it

When you call an intimate moment with your partner "the Assault Phase"

Is that followed by a pile-in move?

That brings a whole new meaning to the term "Hit and Run"

Can that be following a deep strike, or do you have to wait until the next round?

Can be done as well in a similar method to make a combi-plasma, either using a bolter and a plasma rifle, or for terminators the storm bolter and a plasma pistol.

Very nice end results, and well explained.

If you're short on Melta-Guns, it is possible to buy them directly from GW. It's $5.95 for 5 metal ones - they ship free if you order over $15 worth of stuff.

I know folks say never buy directly from them, but from what I can tell the free shipping makes them very competitive. I grabbed 5 plasma rifles and 5 meltas and a set of 10 nurgley shoulder pads and feel pleased enough at the expense. At the very least I'm not so worried about scrounging up the specific weapons I want for a squad now.

They are sort of a pain in the rear to put on though - I've been cutting off the metal fist and some of the stock from the gun to glue them onto my plastic minis. There's probably a "correct" way to do it but I haven't found it yet.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Observations on complex unit wound allocation: If you're feeling screwed, your opponent is probably doing it right.

Basc search of this site shows some combi flamer images

One from a sternguard - think that one is ok but looks more like a flamer with a single shot bolter

One I prefer is here http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/gallery-viewimage.jsp

Dont have much time to paint let alone pioneer conversions so if anyone has more time and masters this please put up a tutorial!

On the first look it may look good, but once you take a detailed moment inspecting it, it does not turn out so well.
This does not look like a combimelta to me.

Okay, feel free not to use it. ;-)

edit: oh wait, the combi flamer? I am going to do up one of each of the combi-weapons after the Wild West shootout - I think that this example is a good start, but yeah, the combi-flamer and the combi-plasma are both going to be a bit more complex I think.
