Death's Shepherd

A Flesh Tearers short story

A Chaplain of the Flesh Tearers leads a rag-tag band of rebels on the world of Zurcon. But will they find atonement in victory for the sins of their fellow Zurconians?

READ IT BECAUSE
It's a brief, but memorable, tale that shows the dark, uncompromising side of the Flesh Tearers.

THE STORY
Years ago, the now long dead Chapter Master of the Flesh Tearers, Amit, did cleanse the Zurcon system in the name of Cretacia and the Emperor. It has taken centuries, but Zurcon has again turned to heresy. A Chaplain leads the rebellion against the traitors, a force comprised of Zurconians still loyal to the Throne, turning his rage on the betrayers and every soul who has erred in his duty.

Written by Andy Smillie

Has there been a new Ciaphas Cain novel in the last two years? I don't recall seeing one, but I've stopped paying much attention to BL since panic-buying all the Warhammer Fantasy Time of Legends books.

For that matter, has there been any paperback AOS release?

AoS stuff is starting the paperback part of the cycle, though I think trade size $16ish price range. First novel (50kish words) RGW War Storm is out now in paperback. Some of the Legends books accompanying new factions (these are surprisingly good, btw) might do paperback realease. Not sure as I have them as ebooks.

COMPETITION TIME: #MY40KLEGEND
You might have seen that Black Library have partnered with Hachette Partworks to release a series of hardback novels under the title of Warhammer 40,000 Legends – a set of eighty (80!) hardback 40k novels which will be released one a fortnight to build up a fine collection of 40k goodness.

Sounds good, right? How about adding in some additional content in the form of curator’s notes and timelines, as well as a cool new specially-commissioned piece of artwork for the spines? Yep – when all 80 are lined up you’ll have 40k artwork on your bookshelf!

I’m going to be talking more about these books in the coming weeks and months, but first of all I’ve got something really cool to talk about…

Competition Time!
If all this talk of serialised hardback novels sounds good to you, you’ll like this even more – Hachette have kindly given me the chance to offer one lucky person (in the UK/ROI) a full subscription to the series, absolutely free! That’s right…that’s 80 free hardback 40k novels. If that doesn’t pique your interest, what are you reading this for?!

What do I have to do?
It’s really easy to enter, with nary a form in sight! All you need to do is get in touch with me via the blog, Facebook or Twitter, and using the hashtag #my40klegend tell me in 140 character or less who your favourite character is from Black Library’s 40k stories (including the Horus Heresy!). It can be absolutely anyone, from big name heroes or villains down to obscure supporting characters – whoever you choose, you just need to persuade me why he or she (or it) is the coolest 40k character.

I’ll pick my favourite response, and whoever gave that response will win the subscription!

Here’s an example of the sort of thing you might say:

#my40klegend is Inquisitor Iobel because even when she’s dead you’re not sure if she’s helping or hindering Ahriman.

Make sure to like or follow me on whichever site you use, so that I can get in touch with you if you win.

Let’s break it down…

1. Decide whether you want to get in touch on the blog, Facebook or Twitter.
2. Make sure you follow/like me on whichever site you’ve chosen (I’ll need to get back in touch with you if you win!).
3. Using the hashtag #my40klegend let me know who your favourite 40k/HH character is, from Black Library’s series. Keep it to no more than 140 characters – I’ll be counting!
4. Keep your fingers crossed.

How long have I got?
The competition opens on Wednesday 7th September and closes at the end of the day (i.e. 23:59 BST) Tuesday 20th September. Don’t be late – I won’t accept any entries after the cutoff point. Even if they’re really good.

I’ll pick one winner on Wednesday 21st September and notify them that day. If you win, I’ll need your name and contact details to pass on to Hachette so that they can start sending the books out to you.

Is there any small print?
Not a lot, really. The competition is for one standard subscription to Hachette Partworks’ Warhammer 40,000 Legends collection. Sadly Hachette can only distribute to the UK/ROI so you do need to live within this region to be eligible for the competition. Please feel free to send in multiple entries, although you might want to focus on quality over quantity! It’s 40k and Horus Heresy only, so please don’t send me any Warhammer Fantasy/Age of Sigmar suggestions (even though those characters are awesome too).

If you’d like to know more about the collection, including how to subscribe (in case you don’t win!) you can find all the details at http://warhammer40klegends.com/the-collection. I’ll be providing information and my thoughts on the collection on the blog as well, so keep an eye out for more info.

If you’ve got any questions specifically about the competition then get in touch to let me know, otherwise good luck – I’m looking forward to hearing about your favourite characters! Let’s give a massive thank you to Hachette as well for offering this as a prize – very cool!

This has probably been answered way back, but when is Red Tithe (the Carchardorons book) releasing?

"Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!" —Jago Sevatarion

Aye, although I dont think it was enough to make everyone at home watching go 'oh this looks cool, I'll check it out' but really nice to see this step taken.

If only they would take the next little step and make a Horus Heresy TV series or Armageddon film.

It advertised yeterday on the TV on BBC2 and I came here to find out. All I can say is regardless of the books, I'm really shocked to see 40k or GW adverts on TV. Even when they had their mainstream games like Space Marine, even new editions etc, I never saw adverts on TV and I watched TV constantly back then, rarely now, and hardly if ever with adverts.

I was just really surprised to see GW shell out money for TV adverts on a premier TV channel, I thought they didn't do stuff like that.

Seems to have had some major coverage, I think I saw it whilst watching some reality/crime TV channel. Admittedly I'm not sure it conveyed much to anyone who didn't already know about it, beyond it being a book series.

Gw are not shelling out money. Hachette, the collections publisher, are paying for this marketing.
