Guarding Guardian
|
I got into Warhammer Fantasy last November, and enjoyed the painting and modelling quite a bit, but soon found a shortage of players. Some friends of mine have started to collect 40k, however, and as such I've surveyed the armies and selected the Eldar as my race of choice.
I was intrigued by their story, and when I saw the Craftworld dynamic built into their culture, I knew I could have a lot of fun painting these guys. Honestly, this is the first sustained attempt at creating a unified army I've ever made (my Dwarf army was known as the Stragglethrong and consisted of dwarves from every keep, resulting in a color scheme without a scheme by default). I had done some thoughts about how to paint these guys, and right away, there was something about Red/White/Gold that really got me going. Now, bearing that in mind, I present my test figure, a guardian who has about 20 coats of paint on him thanks to eBay and my lack of patience for stripping test minis...
Front
Rear
Closer... his face had some imperfections on it due to the previous coats of paints, and you can tell where I need to steady my hand a bit. but it conveys my point, I think.
I decided I wanted to have the blue gems because while they stand out, they still seem theme appropriate. Anyway, so I took that test figure and made a few changes to where I wanted to take the color scheme. Considering that these guys are just guardians, I figured I might make a "radiance" color scheme (Athag Anaris meaning "Face of Dawnlight"), and slowly slide the colors closer to yellow to represent each individual unit's progress down their particular Path. Any thoughts on that? So we'd probably have something along the lines of this...
HQ Units - Golden Yellow, Sunburst Yellow, Skull White
Troops - Red Gore, Blood Red, Blazing Orange
Elite/Fast Attack - Blood Red, Blazing Orange, Golden Yellow
Heavy Support - Bronzed Flesh, Bleached Bone
Of course, the idea is there are many colors per unit type for fluff purposes. I like the idea of maintaining a unit throughout lists and adding to its fluff as it goes along. So feasibly, a Red Gore Dire Avengers unit I take into my first game might "evolve" into a Blazing Orange squad if they prove themselves worthy after a few months of playing. By evolve, of course, I mean that I'll buy another DA unit and paint that the appropriate color scheme, which also allows me to field "historic" Athag Anaris armies - revisiting old lists from a time when my units were newbs.
Alright, done with that...
A few more shots of my near-completed Guardian test-squad...
My Guardians here are Blood Red because it's the only color I had, haha, but I'll let them be Any other suggestions in terms of color scheme or how I should progress with this army?
---
---
---
---
---
Any advice? There are a few technical issues with the painting that I've encountered so far - one being gloppy paint (it had been sitting for months and I just sort of haphazardly shook it thinking it'd be enough), as well as models with mold imperfections (bought off ebay and the previous owner didn't bother to shave away the extra mold lines and the like), double basecoats (again, thanks to the previous owner), and a massively shaking hand.
I'm trying to learn how to blend, and also when I get more paints I will attempt some highlights. Any recommendations?

Also, Exarch's will be one step brighter in color than the rest of their squad.

Nice start, we don´t usually see beginning players put such thought and planning into their first armies!
I like the idea of progressive colors through the army, you might want to consider giving each aspect a bit of their "Original" color, like bone for Howling Banshees, green for Scorpions.
This might help you and your friends tell them apart on the table..
The painting looks nice, blacklining isn´t my thing, I´m more into blending, but these are excellent so far.
As far as brush control, I find that resting my wrists or lower arms on the table edge helps tremendously when I need a steady hand.
IF you want more definition on your models, try some washes. Ogryn flesh is pretty darn good for red, you can then highlight with your base colour to get back to that shade, or go a bit lighter if you want...
And I bet those cloth areas and sashes could do nicely with some Devlan "Miracle" Mud.
Ahh, and also, if you want to blend your colours, be sure to thin them. Because you don´t want your blended areas to be smothered with paint, it´s more like dividing the layer into several small ones.
I like the Idea of bright, gaudy exarchs.
One more thing, for better pictures, try placing your models on a white non reflective surface, such as copying paper. And use a light source (or better, two) in front of them to get better defined photo´s.
If you need more tips, check out the tutorial section, lots of excellent stuff on there!
Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks! The scheme sort of accidentally coincided with the Saim Hann colors (I started painting before I really understood anything about craftworlds), which works out since I love the idea of Saim Hann. I'm considering making the fluff for Athag Anaris such that they were a group of Eldar who split from the Saim Hann just as they were leaving the homeworld due to a rift in the way they viewed the Path. Athag Anaris Eldar embrace the Path more fully than any other Craftworld Eldar, bringing them somewhat closer to the ruin that saw the destruction of their race, but they are convinced they "know better" and can withstand the intense temptations they will experience.
As for the white face, yeah, I definitely agree! The gold face was the very FIRST test model, and I saw it and considered that perhaps the gold would have to be my accent color instead of occupying a major role. You might notice there's no gold face in the full squad pics - his face was quickly re-done
I'm currently working on painting my Wave Serpent, so hopefully I'll have pics of that up soon enough!

War Walker is nearing completion! I need a second coat on all of it, and I'm gonna put scatter lasers on it - the lasers themselves are almost painted, and once this baby is done I'm gonna move on to my Dire Avengers. I put my Wave Serpent on hold in order to take care of the Walker. Let's face it - the Wave Serpent would be nice to have fully painted, but I need to be able to field an army. Dire Avengers and Guardians plus War Walker is not a bad start.
Like I said, everything pretty much needs a second coat, and I want to lay some tape down on the windshield to prevent me from botching it. I had some internal debate about whether or not the pilot was too plainly painted, but figured, eh, what the heck, he's fine.
So this is the one end of the color scheme - Heavy Support.
I've decided that any war machines and heavy support units should get the scab red/bleached bone color combo specifically because I like having dark colored dark reapers, and those colors seemed to compliment the color scheme without being too far off base. I figured that war walkers, serpents, and fire prisms were a little less intimidating when painted a bright yellow haha. When I paint my DA's, you'll get to see some more of the color scheme. They'll basically be the same as the original guardians, but will have an exarch who gets upgraded to orange

Well, I used washes back when I painted dwarves, and honestly, I wasn't a big fan of them. Occassionally I find they really add to it, but I think I'm perhaps not using them correctly.
as far as the sashes - Devlan Miracle Mud? Is this a color or a substance?
How do you thin your paints? My previous attempts involved just dipping the brush into water before applying the paint, but that didn't seem to work well haha. Again, maybe I just need to refine my technique.
And to address your last point, I attempted to do this with a piece of copy paper for my war walker, but it was late and I impatiently didn't look around for a better setup. In the future I'll have to set up a little "photo studio" for my army. Thanks for the advice!
Oh, and just as a general note to everyone, as per my first post, all photographs are copyright Justin Horton 2009, unless noted.

Haha that's fair! It kind does look like that! Maybe they should be wearing right proper armor instead of nikes, that might explain my streak of losses!
Any way, just popping in with an update:
I had two massive fails last night.
First, I went to paint the scatter lasers and attach them to my walker only to learn that, hey wait a tick, these are supposed to be attached via axel, not slot like it shows in the instructions...
So I painted two wave serpent scatter lasers all night and my war walker is further on hold.
Additionally, the white basecoat spraypaint I got was textured or something - it didn't say that on the can, though. I'm thinking it might have been a product of the environment or the amount that I sprayed it but it doesn't make too much sense... never had that problem with black spray. So yeah. I may have to strip and re-basecoat all the sprues for my Dire Avengers and Guardians. And I was really hoping to be able to play with my DA's soon!
However! There is some good news - I think I can slice away the little ring for the axel and thin it up so I can still insert it into the slot-based shoulder of the walker. I started cutting one up, and it looks like it'll work out! I'll try to get pictures up tonight - I hope this works out because I spent a lot of time painting and repainting those guns (and now that I need to cut them up, it's losing more paint from all the wear!)

Nice scheme! The lines that you're doing on the weapon platform will look really good if you repeat them on other, larger vehicle/weapon hulls.
Actually, that scheme is so strong, you might want to just repeat it over the whole army with different emphasis (but no color changes or added colors) on other force-org choices.
And the white "sneakers"... how else would they get "Fleet of Foot"?

Nice scheme, good visual pop and great use of contrast. I'm also not a big fan of blacklining but it's acceptable here. I like the background too. It's creative and not "OMG my eldars are the buttkickingest".
Devlan Mud is the brown wash from GW/Citadel. It's good for most base colors hence being a "miracle" wash. Personally, I prefer the Ogryn Flesh wash for reds and use Gryphonne Sepia for yellows and oranges - the Devlan is too dirty for them.

Hey guys! I'm in Michigan on business - I was able to get a few pics of the work I did to convert the war walker as well as the paint job on my wave serpent but can't post them till later tonight. The walker conversion went okay, but I kind of angles one ofthe guns and I'm not sure how I like the look. More updates tonight! Automatically Appended Next Post: Alright, quick update! What follows are some shots of my Wave Serpent and War Walker weapons:
This is my Wave Serpent from afar... these are old photos, though, and I've added a bit more color to it (the scab red from the walker and bleached bone sections are now all painted).
This is a closeup of the cockpit. I "basecoated" some of the bleached bone sections with skull white since i was impatient and didn't have my bleached bone. After painting the walker, I found this white basecoat to be largely unnecessary.
A shot of one of my panels from the serpent. I've cleaned this up a bit now, and the final coats were added. Question - has anyone else found their first coats coming out this blotchy, or am I doing something wrong? I feel as though perhaps I'm not taking enough time or adding enough water...
Just a cool shot of the serpent here. Hopefully I'll get my friend to take shots from this angle when it's fully painted and assembled!
This is a photo of the REAL war walker scatter laser - note the tab at the bottom (it's on top in the picture, but on the bottom of the gun).
This shot shows the two scatter lasers together, the Serpent version being the painted one, and the walker version being the unpainted one... and the little piece on the left is the "shoulder" of the walker, which has the slot for the gun in it. Oh the humanity! I painted a gun for the wrong vehicle! Woe is me!
This is a shot comparing the "converted" axel-based wave serpent scatter laser with the original. I had to thin it out and slice off the bottom a bit.
Here, you can see how I attached the "converted" scatter laser to the slot base - voila! Sadly, this is a photo I took so the quality isn't so good - I couldn't find the manual focus on my buddy's camera and he was nowhere to be found! Naturally, the black part got painted bleached bone soon after the conversion. I'll probably need some green stuff to smooth it out, though, looking at it.
So that's basically the update. As I said, I finished some more work on these things (the guns are actually attached to the walker!) so I'll have a further update. The right hand gun on the walker came out a bit lopsided, sadly enough, but it looks like the walker has tilted the gun to fire at a specific target. It's kind of cool looking, but I can't tell if perhaps it also doesn't just look plain wrong. when I get some pictures up perhaps you guys can provide some input.
In the meantime, being the ADD painter that I am, also started my swooping hawks. I wanted to try and get some brighter colors out on the field, and in line with my scheme they've got a nice bright orange. If I get some more work done on those, I'll post some pics, too.
Thanks, everyone, for all your comments!
I'm hoping that it does indeed "pop" when on the table!

Brief Update: Not much time to paint recently, and some losses in Atlantic City set me back but here's the current status:
Alright, got my third jetbike. I'm gonna actually take time to assemble and paint all my jetbikes so I can field a jetbike squad. Currently, the army I own is...
1 Farseer
30 guardians
10 Dire Avengers+exarch
6 Swooping Hawks (7 if you count one I was donated recently, but only 5 if you count how many have wings lol)
2 Wave Serpents
3 Guardian Jetbikes
1 Harlequin Troupe Master.
4 War Walkers
4 Dark Reapers
The army as it is assembled is...
1 Farseer
20 Guardians
3 armless Dire Avengers (including the exarch)
7 swooping hawks, wingless
1 Wave Serpent
1 hull-less jetbike
1 Troupe Master
1.75 War Walkers (There's a fully assembled one, and three shattered ass ones)
The army as it is painted is...
10 Guardians
1 War Walker
1 Wave Serpent ( WIP)
1 Farseer ( WIP)
1 Swooping Hawk ( WIP)
I'm gonna take some time to build an army list now using just the models I've got, then when I get home I'll work on painting towards that list. Honestly, the Guadian Jetbikes shouldn't take me too long.
UPDATE: Army list created! This list is the entire arsenal of Athag Anaris insofar as I could legally field it:
looking at it, I think it really leaves me a lot of options and would actually be really fun to play.
HQ:
Farseer
--Doom, Guide, Fortune, RoWitnessing, Singing Spear, Spirit Stones
TROOPS:
10x Guardians
--Eldar Missile Launcher, Wave Serpent (Spirit Stones, Shuricannons)
10x Guardians
--Bright Lance, Wave Serpent (Spirit Stones, Shuricannons)
10x Guardians
--Starcannon
10x Dire Avengers
--Exarch (Bladestorm, Power weapon and shimmershield)
3x Guardian Jetbikes
FAST ATTACK:
7x Swooping Hawks
--Exarch (Skyleap, Sunrifle)
HEAVY SUPPORT:
4x War Walkers
-- [Scatter laser 2x], [Scatter laster, Brightlance], [Scatter laser, Eldar Missile Launcher], [Bright lance 2x]
4x Dark Reapers
TOTAL POINTS: 1499
59 models, 57 wounds, 9 vehicles
Thoughts?

Firstly I think your army looks pretty good, that heavy blacklining is a nice touch.
Secondly I realize you're working with what you've got and I don't think it'd take that much to bring your list up to competative level.

A solid choice. I don't know if I'd take the singing spear.

You need a warlock badly, without them you are going to go down to 1 pie plate or even just a blast. You're low leadership coupled with a garbage save and medeocre toughness will have guys dying in droves to regular bolter fire. I like your platform weapon choice if you're going to use it on blast setting, however I'd recommend a scatter laser in conjunction with guardian BS for sheer volume of fire.
Give the serpent the EML
BladeSire wrote:

I know you're digging for AT but try to get the BL on the serpents so you can at least have a twin linked. 1 shot and BS3 will miss a LOT. Again no warlock is a huge liability.

Swap the starcannon for a scatter laser and stick these guys on an objective in cover. Warlock?

I would say to lose the PW and SS, but I assume that these are you main counter assault unit? I would stick them in a serpent and drop BS for Defend. If you want sheer ownage then drop SS& PW and go for the twin shuri cats with blade storm. Couple that with a fortune and even marines will hit the dirt.
BladeSire wrote:

I think you could use these guys with the Seer to soak up some fire, but don't expect too much from them. Save for a last turn objective snatch

I don't like hawks, but some people find them amazing. I'll leave the critique to those individuals

Again the BL's are best left to serpents, unless you are going to guide the walkers. In that case you may actually land some hits, but then your fortuneseer will be stuck in the back field. I would recommend scatter lasers all the way around, 32 str 6 shots isn't bad at all and you'd be surprised at what you can do to things like valkyries on glances.
BladeSire wrote:

Ah, marine death dealers. Stick them in some cover and launch the rain of death, you do need an exarch for the tempest launcher and crack shot if you have the points.

When you post that you have 59 models, 57 wounds, and 9 vehicles your inflating your own self confidence (nothing wrong with that at all). However, you are neglecting to mention the quality of those models/wounds/vehicles. A good slice of those vehicles are AV10 all the way around and jetbikes. Wave serpents are awesome though
in general I think you have a solid troop foundation and you just need a few tweaks.

Hey guys! Sorry, been busy for awhile. Spreading out my painting efforts a bit, so there's a collection of what I've dipped my brush into...
The completed walker, ready and rarin' to go - now he's actually got the base attached, but I need to add some flock or something.
This is the test figure for the swooping hawks - I haven't touched the wings yet, but I'm going to give them blue/white feathers to sort of touch upon the "original" colors as a previous commentor mentioned.
Finally, I gave my first blending attempt a go, and this is the WIP farseer. I need to add more yellow to his robes and lessen the darkness of the folds, but for a first try, I'm pretty proud.
Oh and here's a shot of my "workspace" - I think it reflects my painting-A.D.D. fairly well...
I really need to treat my stuff better!!
Thanks for all the comments!

Late night insomniac sleeping results:
1 Fully painted swooping hawk. I've been painting scab red and blood red, and the taste of yellow I got with the farseer got me wanting to paint something brighter. the swooping hawks wings had been sitting on my desk taunting me, so I picked'em up and tested the color scheme. pics are on the way, but the color scheme is basically blazing orange armor, white pants, white helmet, wings skeleton is blazing orange, with the inner feathers being ice blue (same color I've been painting the spirit stones) and the outer ones being white. The spirit stones on this guy are yellow - I figured I'd also differentiate the "eliteness" of various troops through their gem colors. He took me a couple of hours, and but for a few touch-ups, I think he looks decent.
1 test dire avenger - I based these guys white so they're naturally more bright, and the spots where i did backlining on the guardians are more difficult now because it's based white. Plus, my black paint is kaput so I had to sub in scab red for it until i can afford some more paint. The red armor with white underlining looks pretty slick I think, makes them stand out pretty well.
1 "test" dire avenger exarch - by test I mean, I think I figured out how I want to paint this guy. Originally I was playing with the concept of exarchs getting painted in the next color level - troops exarchs getting blazing orange, elite/fast attack get golden yellow - but I think I found a better arrangement. The underlining of the exarch is what's the next level color, so this exarch has the standard red plates you've seen on the guardians, but in the "cracks" you see the blazing orange peeking through. I figured this might give the transitional sunrise effect that I wanted from the start. It sort of shows the development along each path that my troops have undergone (by showing the red-yellow gradient) whilst also working on an individual level that helps ties the larger groups together. We'll see what it looks like on the table, but I think this is a pretty sweet idea, i'm excited about it.
More of my wave serpent - the serpent is SO large - christ! Several coats of paint on each of the panels, but the panels are all painted. Now comes the more painstaking part - the weapons and details, which I'm dreading a tad. There's so much to paint on these larger vehicles that progress always feels slow. Ah well, it's coming along
2 partially painted jetbikes - I wanted a more vibrant red so I made the "mistake" of basing the hulls white but the bikes black. We'll see if I need to rebase them or not.
I'll get pics up soon! Automatically Appended Next Post: LucasLAD wrote:When you post that you have 59 models, 57 wounds, and 9 vehicles your inflating your own self confidence (nothing wrong with that at all). However, you are neglecting to mention the quality of those models/wounds/vehicles.
in general I think you have a solid troop foundation and you just need a few tweaks.
Hey LucasLAD - thanks for the comments! I think you're spot on - but I've been picking up a basic, field-able army, you know? Warlocks are something I've been neglecting :( Workin' on it though! Trying to get these guys painted before I pick up some new models
As for the model count, *shrug* that was just something my friends did on our personal forums. Figured it was sort of like for statistical comparison. I understand what you're saying though about watching the quality of vehicles/wounds. It's nice to compare the numbers though - a tyranid list looks quite different haha.

WHABAM!
New update! Here's what I've got for you below:
Finished* Swooping Hawk
Finished Jetbike
Partial Wave Serpent
Partial Dire Avengers
*Finished implies only that the model is conceptually complete - I'll prolly have to touch some gak up on all of them, as there are places where my hand wasn't quite so steady lolol
I think the jetbike looks pretty decent honestly - and the wave serpent is turning out pretty sweet, too, I think. A little depressing though, all that scab red...
So without further ado...
WHABAM:
My finished jetbike - I did a new candy-corn hull and I think I prefer it. Flag was just some regular paper, twisted a little, clear coated, painted, positioned, clearcoated. The symbol on the flag uses the eldar mobius strip imagery and cuts it in half to make it resemble a dawn - trying to stick with the theme of "Face of Dawnlight" I made this "infinite dawn" symbol and tried to give the hull a "sunrise" effect:
I decided to give the rider a vest instead of making the whole thing red:
The flag, from one angle. Seems less wavy than it is from this perspective:
The console:
Riding through the Plains of Workspace... also a better angle on the flag:
AND THE WAVE SERPENT! Made a lot of progress on this dude! When we last left sir serpent, I believe you saw this:
But behold! The Wave Serpent has risen from the WIP graveyard:
The glass was frosted by the clearcoat, which I first noticed on the War Walker (coming up), but I kind of liked the effect, honestly. The straight transparent glass always sat wrong with me.
Anyway, one painter had mentioned that he was color coding his serpents for the units they would carry, which I thought was neat, so this serpent is coded for my Troops units:
The back door - threw in a little red gore to brighten it up. Still needs a couple coats in various places. Also, don't have a pic of the inside of the door, but the foot treads are painted:
Here's start on the engines. Again I added red gore, and some bone white as well:
Just a shot of the bright lance, on it's way to the destruction of many a tank...:
The WAR WALKER! This dude's been 99% finished for a long time, so I thought I'd give it the final touches. Scatter lasers on, shoulder panels painted, whole thing clear coated. You'll see the frosted glass effect again:
Had some issues with a transfer... really bothering me... it looked off when it dried, then I tried to paint it and make it less obvious, but this happened:
SWOOOOOPING HAWK! Only got one of these guys done, but he was the "test" figure - he turned out sweet, I think. I'm most proud of this guy. Could be better though! I have to be more consistent with my blacklining - some things are blacklined, others aren't. Still, hands down my favorite:
DIRE AVENGERS! They're definitely still in the early stages - I tried to give the exarch a little more flavor by adding the blazing orange underlining, as blazing orange is the next color step in the "dawn path." Could look sweet if i can touch it up right, but I NEED black paint. As for the rest, I really like the red with white underline:
That's all for now! I may be able to get more done this week - we'll see! I'm ACHING to finish the wave serpent off... it's driving me nuts! To be fair, however, once I finish these models... I don't have any more to paint... I'll have to dip into my funds and pick up some rangers and howling banshees

Please make their feet black instead of white!!
I love the scheme though. I think the faces look better in an orangey rather than white or black.

orange faces? Hmm... honestly these will be the first heads i do that are white (the guardians have red helmets) - maybe I'll give it a test figure and see how it looks!
As for the shoes, I kinda like the white shoes We'll see though, what happens when the army is more near completion, and if it looks too goofy.
Anyone else have thoughts on the footwear? Automatically Appended Next Post: This just in!
Ordered my howling banshees! Proxied these guys and absolutely loved'em, so i picked up a set. I was thinking skull white armor with blazing orange hair, highlighted with some yellow - thoughts?

you only like howling banshees cause they ripped through my death company one day...
your army is going to be very bright in spots and kind of subdued in others (aka wave serpent is darker, but oranges and yellows on banshees will be bright as hell). im interested to see how it looks all together.
as for the feet, i like the white feet with white heads, matching feet and helmets have always been a thing for me

Racta just said what I was thinking.
Anyway, why not add a bit more orange to hull of the bike? Maybe some streaks/lines blending up it?

i like the way the front of the bike looks, but combined with the back, its a very red look. From the back it looks all red.

All red's not so bad - most of the army will be red as it is. I see what you mean though. Really, I think I'll need to pound out the whole army and see the collective look before I can finalize it, haha.
Also, what does everyone think of warp spiders? I'm going to test them out today and see if I like'em - they seem tactically interesting and a bit versatile as well. Any thoughts on that?

banshee time!
The good camera my friend has is currently out of batteries, but I got my banshees yesterday and couldn't resist! Sorry for the crappy pic quality, I'll get the good stuff up here today
So, the banshee's "origin" color is bleached bone, but making them all bleached bone, to me, doesn't jive well, because that's sort of a"reserved" color for the heavy support vehicles. Any ideas on how I might work this color into my banshees?

I have to say I really like your colour scheme. Looks fantastic. I look forward to seeing your harlequin, as I love their paint jobs in almost every Eldar army.

@tekken: Yeah - for the guardians, i was working with pre-painted models and since they were my first, I didn't know you could strip them. They had a basecoat of white which I went over with black, and some small spots of red paint. Everything else though, does have several coats - I've had a hard time keeping the color consistent without multiple coats. Which models in particular were you thinking looked really thick, or was it everything? my white paint, also, has been giving me some problems - I think it may be coagulating and drying, and it's become really hard to use.
