So today I started work on the HMS Medusa. The keel was built then the super structure, I have alot of work and detailing to be done, but here it is so far. The deck is removable for amphibious assault craft and the gun that is in place now is a place holder until i design the real turret. I hope these pictures show the scale of the command ship.

Its actually a really cool idea, with Valkyries and Vendettas being the primary aircraft onboard? My advice is to draw up or sketch a plan of sections that you can build over time. Breaking your workload down would help so much!

When I think aircraft carrier for the guard though, This image sprang to mind:

Except it would be far more gothic, with more rivets and imperial eagles everywhere.

Hope that helps a little.

I'm almost ashamed to say it. But its from the show 'Captain Scarlet'. Its made by the same people who made thunderbirds.

A wet imperial navy? vs. a Wet Tau navy?! awesome! so you want to do a landing vessel for the flagship...wonder if anyone has the old GIjoe hovecraft laying around or the aircraft carrier? i guess you could start by laying out the hull, 1.5 feet across and 3-4feet long. hatch at the rear for the wet deck. about 4-8 quad autocannon mounts from the Planetstrike Aegis defense walls skirting just under the flight deck. maybe mix in a few lascannon mounts and a few whirlwind turrets... above the flightdeck with the off center tower, if thats the design you want, the older WW2 style ship had some deck guns, figure either a few russ turrets or a few armoured up earthshaker cannons for ship to ship fun...enough flight deck space to land 6 valks.... elevator in the center and off to one side... you don't need catapults cause they are V-tol craft... hmm this ting must have like over 20 hull points... a few void shields... and Chimeras are can launch out the wet deck to strike at the enemy since they are amphibious... gimmie a few days, i think i can draw up what i am thinking, i just need to unpack my scanner...

how about a catamaran hull or that fance new tri-hull the navy is playing with... or you can make a Land-ship... a hovering aircraft carrier...its been noted in a few 40k novels...mostly in the possesion of chaos but i'm sure the imperials must have a verison of that monster...

I dont have any ideas yet, but I just wanted to say that this could be a really cool idea. Its got to have alot of flyers and GUNS! No Imperial ship should be without one or both of those lol

Yeah I have been doing mesurments all day with my valks and cardboard for mock up sizes, i think if im going to make it a managable size i am gonna do a 48" hull in the new LPD style design, i really tried to follow the Bataan design but to keep it in the 48" size frame it just looks way to chunky, the LPD will give me 3 valks on the deck and 3 more in the hangar. I want to convert a valk into a sky crane to carry heavy non amphibious vehicles like the leman russ to shore

Lol! i was thinking of makeing a skyhook varient of the Valk yesterday... i was thinking nix the crew compartment, gonna have to scratch build the back half of the cockpit area to attact to the valk roof/engine mount... and adding a 3rd engine between the first two... but thats for another thread. i think you should go with either one big landing craft (hover) to deploy 2-4 tanks at a time or peronal landing vessels... you tanks will be bottled up inside, only the turrets poke out the top...maybe the Landing craft could mount its own defense, hvy bolters or stubbers... and nothing to stop you from deploying artillery from the deck to help bolster the ships offensive fire power...

I made a couple of boats, the biggest being able to fit 40-50 guardsmen on the deck and a battle cannon thing. this one is made from card. The middle on is made from a milk bottle and the smallest is like a speed boat made of card. They're easy to make.

Does anyone have any rules for playing with boats. I think there was an article in White Dwarf once.

Around 2000 or 2001 I saw a games day event that was an IG gunboat against an Ork aircraft carrier filled with death copters.

ANyone have pictures of it?

Yea, well until about a year ago I had the toy of the skybase in my loft. I'm 21.

The flying aircaft carrier from the Sky Captain movie also springs to mind - very cool.

But you need an actual 'floating in the water' ship? The cynic in me says you should just buy a pile of Planetstrike and CoD terrain and stick it together in a boat shape, coz an IG battleship probably would look like a floating fort anyway But seriously, it a sensible approach would be to design a big hull (well, the top few inches) with blank slots on top to hold modular Planetstrike/CoD-style towers, turrets and bastions etc - that way you can re-use the top bits for normal games. It wouldn't be hard to make them look both ship-like and fort-like.

Sounds like a great idea - is there anything at all in the 'official' fluff about Imperial water-bound ships? I have the image of a massive floating cathedral in my head...
Quick question - why the prefix 'HMS'? In the Royal Navy that stands for 'Her Majesty's Ship'. Maybe 'HES', for Holy Emperor's Ship'?

HMS used to stand for "His Majesty's Ship" when there was a king

Pic 1, because 1. More room for parked/scrambling aircraft and 2. More deck room for gun turrets and general 'grim dark gothic-ery'

I vaguely remember HIMS being affixes to surface naval vessels. His imperial Majesty's Ship.

Pic 1 is a better example - more brutal and boxy - IG wouldn't build a sleek streamlined ship. Avoid any curves, the hull should look like a giant cross between a Valkyrie and a Thunderhawk.
