My FLGS has started a "Tale of Many Gamers" campaign, and I gleefully joined in. I have been anticipating the tyranid release, and I'll be painting nids.
We just kicked off this weekend, and I headed over to Gitsmack's house to do some painting. Earlier this month I had been glueing genestealers and a lictor together to be ready. I've got 2 months to paint 500 points. I usually paint much faster than that, but I'm going to try and challenge myself by upping the quality of my painting.
Anyway... here are some various random pics to show to you all.
I really should have taken some pics prior to priming, but this guy won't really be exciting until he is painted anyway. The dead space marine is based separately just for painting purposes, he'll be at the feet of the lictor who just tore his head and right arm off. This pic does the conversion very little justice, and I need to get some more genestealers painted before I can reward myself with painting this centerpiece.
This was a super easy but fun conversion for a stealer. If I've learned anyting from going to tournaments, its that conversion work is at least as important as painting (and in the case of some judges, more important than painting). So if you are going for an award winning army, you'll have to have little touches on your entire army, from the lowliest grunt to the centerpiece, in addition to painting very well.
Some decorative basing.
And here is my first finished model. I didn't really see the thickness of those lines on his back ridges (I'll be cleaning that up tonight). I like that his arm situaton and his colors put images of spider-man into my head.
If you are wondering, I really want to smash everyone over the head with these colors. Nids are such an overpopulated tourney army, it is very difficult to distinguish yourself from the crowd. Well, if i have some electric red tones and hawk turqouise, I might be able to get you to stop walking, and if you lean in you'll see all of the dead 1st co. ultramarines that'll be scattered all over their bases.
Ok, so I'm on a tight painting schedule, so this will be updated far more regularly than my Vostroyan plog.
Thanks for stopping by, hopefully I'll have a group shot of the first 12 stealers in a couple weeks.

I look forward to seeing how they turn out.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

I'm curious - why the choice of the older lictor legs on the lictor? Other than that though, I like the colour scheme you've gone for. I don't know why but I'm drawn to the stealers head...

Well, the first round has passed me by... I didn't get the first 500 done. It turns out it is very frustrating to have chosen an army that is just about to get a codex, but information isn't quite available yet. I tried desperately to choose a 500 point army to paint, using the rules for combat patrol, that wouldn't be trashed when a new codex came out.
What I came up with was about 21 genestealers with scuttlers and flesh hooks, and a lictor. It was a terrible list, I lost my game I played with it, but I think I managed to only paint models i will still want to use come january 16th.
The confines of the combat patrol and not being excited at all about the models I was painting did me in... I got 11 genestealers and the lictor finished... here they are.
Our next step is to add 250 points in a month, and will now be playing under the standard missions rules. I know quite a bit more about the new tyranid book now, but the next phase will still be played without the new codex.
This gives me the opportunity to ditch the other 10 genestealers from the list, and add more than 250 points worth of goodies.
Here is my 750...
broodlord with flesh hooks + 5x genestealer retinue with flesh hooks
lictor
6x genestealers with scuttlers and flesh hooks
16x hormagaunts with toxin sacs
3x zoanthropes with warp blast and synapse
Although this list is equally terrible... the broodlord and genestealers will become a pretty good troop choice, and the hormagaunt unit with four more added in a spore pod will be an excellent troop as well. The zoanthropes look to be one of the better support units in the codex. The lictor I had high hopes for. Still looks pretty underpowered, but that wasn't too much time sacrificed to get him done. I'm sure there will be some missions where I'd want him over hive guard and zoanthropes.
Here is what I need to paint over the next three weeks.
The broodlord is pretty stock, I just churched up his base a little bit, and I am hoping that scything talons are an inexpensive upgrade for him.
I had fun taking two of the zoanthropes off of their perch, and pinning them into different spots on the base. The pipes all line up if you pose the group right, and I'll be sculpting some sludge onto the one exposed end.
That hormagaunt pic is currently competing for worst picture I have ever taken. I used a lot of the warhammer basing kit to add some variety. Almost all of the darting poses were cut and then re pinned at a more upward angle. This gives the unit some more height variation, and saves me the head ache of the tippy horma syndrome.
So with a whole week off from work almost upon me, and the vigor that getting a new codex will provide me, I think I will likely catch back up to the pack. And after the 16th I'd expect the power level of my lists to jack up considerably.
Thanks for stopping by again.... see you in 3 weeks

Seconded. I really like the blood splatter where the Marine's head used to be. The genestealer broods are also looking unique, but coherent. Overall I really dig this project.

While it isn't quite the lictor-killer/menace idea, I had somthing simmilar for a mission marker.
Basically, the models got a nids arm/bladethingie in his chest, with various melta/flamer burns through him.
He also has about 20-30 bullet holes, but he's still moving!
Pics to come.
