I got this last night and took everything off the sprues. Some of the marines are partially assembled. I have enough to make 21 marines.

Now I have been wanting to start a project where I do 1 Veteran Sergeant that I feel embodies the chapter; from there it branched off to doing some RT era marine schemes. I told my self if I ever had any that I would paint some up like these guys:

Now the more and more I look at them it makes me want to start any army out of them.

Opinions? Suggestions?

Ah... nostalgia. To be honest I'm most impressed with the condition of the box. It's a bit bent, but otherwise fairly good condition. The pic isn't faded or anything.

Personally I would stick to a simple strong colour scheme like Blood Angels. You haven't got a massive surface area on these marines to begin playing around with fancy schemes.

Your call though...

Kidding, I love the scheme for Mentor Legion myself.

That brings back so many memories!
And yeah mentor legion on those marines looked great, single colours seemed a bit too boring for them.

I was going to say Mentor Legion as well, but then I noticed the Space Sharks, do them

Like Flashman said, you don't have much room to do anything fancy, but there should be enough room to do Space Sharks well.

Enjoy the figs, they are awesome. I had a box a while back, had all the packaging. I wonder what I did with the empty box, it would have been like me to throw it out.

Blimey, seeing that makes me feel old (as does the man-flu I am currently suffering from). I remember many hours spent trying different paint schemes on those figs. I always had a soft spot for a LotD type 'black with flames' scheme.

I love Mentor Legion and would vote for them, except... Mentor Legion (as opposed to the modern fluff of "The Mentors" with the same scheme and everything) should have all the best, most modern wargear and fight in small units alongside other marine armies. Look up Nisk Ran-Thawl. I'd suggest this army be one in an old scheme, with some really modern miniatures alongside to be Mentor Legion marines.

I'd avoid using the last of those schemes you painted as, IIRC, that is Tiger Claws, and they are what is now called the Astral Claws, who became the Red Corsairs.

I think these guys would look good as Howling Griffons or Eagle Warriors.

They would also look frikkin' awesome as Legion of the Damned.

Actually, I revise my previous statement. Whilst Minotaurs and Red Scorpions would also be cool, there is only ONE WAY TO PAINT THESE.

Crimson Fists.

Ahhhhh, the good ol days... I remember getting this set back in 88 or 89, i was only 14 or 15. Mine were cast in blue plastic. They seemed so new and state of the art, and yet look so silly now. They complemented the Rogue Trader hardback nicely, which was so poorly bound that all the pages fell out and had to have holes punched in them so they could be put into a 3 ring binder. Will be nice to see your completed project, I always had fun with the Legion of The damned color scheme, myself; but Howling Griffons scheme (badab war?) the one that was a camo scheme was cool too.

I'd pick either lamenters, since the checker pattern compliments the RT era nicely.

Or, a second vote on the space sharks.

The sad thing about them, is that you KNOW that when they were sitting around thinking up chapter names, someone suggested RAINBOW WARRIORS! everyone laughed, and then..... it was written down.

OH yea forgot to add to the post.
Id say, look at the really colorful styles and pick from them. Because RT era just wasnt GRIMDARK!!!!!!! yet. I still like the super colors of the Orks back then

I LOVE THE ENTHUSIASM IN THIS THREAD!

If I am going to paint them 1 scheme as the start of an army I was going to do RG (I am a Raven Guard fanatic) and base them off this pic:

I have 14 bolter arms and 14 bolt pistol arms, and 1 missile launcher and 1 flamer. I was thinking of doing a 10 man squad with bolters, Sgt and ML and a 10 man squad with bolt pistols and close combat weapons, Sgt and flamer.

I want to do them like the pic up there but would need transfers for the lower leg. I have a pdf document for transfers and was wondering if anyone can pretty HIGH quality transfers?

Highlighting black and giving depth and identity to a black scheme army would be a real bitch. I had a Black Legion army back in the days of the original Slaves to Darkness days, I was thinking back to how much of a cop-out it felt like and how much of the detail was lost.

I advise against a black army.

Personally, I'd vote Crimson Fists, like the box art. Those era SM figs just really suit the colours.
That's a third issue box I think (IIRC the first production run were cast in dark blue plastic and the second in green.) but still a nice find.

In case it helps you decide what scheme to use :

(I couldn't let a thread about these venerable models go without throwing that in.)

Don't forget, whatever you paint them as, we want pics

YES!

I am often torn between Alpha Legion and Raven Guard, so I will eventually end up having an army of both.

I also have the smaller version of the box that you have - a full 10 man squad in mine!

Incidentally, you might want to go with the pre-Heresy Raven Guard painting scheme, just because...

Good luck - and I look forward to seeing this take shape!

Ispent hours looking over that picture trying to decide, loved the way they had those stripes, slightly altered schemes for special roles. Oh and ofc rank markings under the chapter symbol

Checked the compendium from RT days, and have deicided to change my vote from metor legion to scythes of the emperor because I used to have them as an army and they look cool. If a bit bumblebeeish. Lets hope 'nids dont get flower based creatures in their codex or I'm getting a scythes army up again to play anyone with them .

I am currently working on my own Luna Wolves pre-heresy army using these guys you have. I find (like others have said) simple flat colours work best, with some well placed line highlights (even if there is no detail to highlight).

It can really make the models 'pop' as they are quite devoid of detail. Character though, they have that in spades.

What should you do with your 20+ RT-era marines? Sit near them and feel the my jealousy from across the globe.

Definately do something old-school with all the back banners and colorful sergeant helmets, chapter badges and whatnot!

Wow, seeing that box sure brings back memories. I think the first ones were produced in a dark blue plastic, and the beige came later.

I think you should paint them up in the old skool style, as others have suggested. Here's what I did with mine. They are essentially copies of the Blood Drinkers models that appeared in WD at the time. I even painted 'pray for death' on the model with the power fist. This is narly all that's left of my original beakies - sadly, some of them disappeared while they were on display in a shop. They're painted in Humbrol enamels. The Captain is a metal model from the first Marine range.
