I've just seen the pics of Kid Kyoto's Grizzly Tank. Does anyone know if these are ever seen on ebay any more or are they entirely extinct and in museums now? I was considering it as a suitable superheavy tank to accompany the Bad Guy #1 tanks I'm getting.

I really mourn the loss of this thing, it's got Blood Axe Ork written all over it.

I´ve seen one a couple times in Ebay but could be the same tank being circled aorund last time it was 300+$ IIRC

I've seen one personally in this country, when Warzone was at its height.
It's not the same one that seems to be being traded from person to person using ebay though.

I saw one on ebay a year back.

IIRC the story is not only did it come out just as Warzone died, someone dropped the mold.

I'm kind of surprised no one is recasting it or making a credible rip-off of the design.

The Akuyaku kit was released in 2005; clearly the design was done before that. When was the Bauhaus tank released?

Warzone's heyday was 10-14 years ago. If I had to guess, I'd say Tim DuPertuis probably saw Miyazaki's sketch and turned it into the Grizzly, and then said sketch was turned into a plastic model completely independently.

lanman wrote:Warzone and chronopia had so many great mini's its a shame they didnt make it.

The minis, however, did, for the most part.

http://princeaugust.ie/target_games/index_chronopia.html

They're even cheap, especially the old Warzone starter box plastics.

Yeah but the plastics use an odd plastic that most glues don't work on. And while they are multipart they are still only good for 1 pose.

A lot of suspicious similarities

Both have the two AA guns in the back and a raisable tower for targeting. Not to mention tracks and turret shape. I'd say WZ probably took inspriation from Miyazaki, after all his aircraft and vehicles always had the same sort of WWI, WWII look they were going for.

Ok, pulled out my copy of the 1st Edition Warzone rules (written by Bill King, incidentally). At least, I believe they were the first edition, although it says Second Edition on the title page... odd. Anyway, on p.74 is a splash pic of a Bahaus Venusian Ranger on horseback. Behind him sits the Grizzly tank, in all its painted glory. The book is copyright 1995.

Moving on, the boxed edition of Warzone came out in 1998; in the rule book there is a pic of a tabletop battle, with the Grizzly in all its 3D, resin-cast glory. And the 2nd issue of their in house magazine, Chronicles: the New Era, there is an article on the Grizzly and its maker, Jean-Jacques Chaboissier. It mentions in the article that at press time they were hoping to make the models shown (he had a few other conversions, including a Dark Legion tank) available. This magazine was published in 1999.

So it looks like the Grizzly is from '95-'98. is the Miyazaki Akuyaku no.1 that old? I have no idea, so maybe someone else can answer that one; it'll be interesting to see which came first.

Well this might be parallel development then.

As far as I can tell (and any of the better Japanese speakers here can correct me) Bad Guy No 1 came from a sketchbook Miyazaki did in 1997.

Here's what I found:

From Sep. of 2005 at a Tokyo model show:

Tasca's 1/72 "Akuyaku Ichigou" (or Bad Guy Number 1.) They took Hayao Miyazaki's fanciful imaginary tank and made a kit.
This tank has been popular among many Japanese fans ever since it first appeared in Model Graphix in the early 1980's.

Also on that site, some NUTTER converted the Bad Guy no.1 into a cut-away model to showcase the interior. The interior that doesn't exists... scratch-built:

...and there we go. Sounds like a case of "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

And I love the interior shots... seeing dioramas like that always inspire me to go do some building, or painting, or scenery making.

Well, it seems like it at first glance, I suppose.
It seems that Model Graphix is a Japanese modeling magazine. The oldest date/issue I could find was from Aug. '88, but there was only a single pic of the cover and a sentence about the contents. So, without exhausting myself searching, I have decided to just take the guy's word for it.

Nope. You can't get just the piggy crew. I was only able to find the kit through an online retailer in Japan though, truth be told, I didn't really look that hard. The kit was about $70 USD including tank and piggy crew (and mascot).

Also, GMM, they are 1/72 scale. That means 20mm. I think they could be labeled "Heroic 20mm" these days, but they should still be far smaller than 40k minis. They'd make sweet Ratling counts-as!

It's older than that, it was the original home of Miyazaiki's Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa (Nausicaa and the Valley of Wind).

Meh, I've got one of those Grizzlies in the basement. Bought it painted plus a metal carrying case for $100. Also have the hovertanks and one of the jeep things. Always wanted to do a conversion on the hovertank like they did for their short lived magazine. Think I have some of the Dark Legion stuff buried as well. It was a great game while it lasted.

I've been looking for one of the 1/48th scale resin "Akuyaku" tanks myself for a while. The history, as far as I can tell:

-- Miyazaki's illustrated story "Tahoutou no Deban" featuring the Akuyaku tank is published in Model Graphix magazine (a Japanese publication), before 1985. The book "Daydream Notes" collected about 6 or 8 years of Miyazaki's articles for Model Graphix, first published in 1995.

-- Modelkasten produced a 1/48th scale resin kit of the Akuyaku, apparently in 1985. VERY rare now.
-- this Japanese page has a pic of the Resin kit: http://8013.teacup.com/kano/bbs/136

-- Tasca produces a 1/72nd scale plastic model kit of the Akuyaku

-- there have been a couple of ceramic (one-piece) models-on-bases produced

Amusingly enough, German web pages seem to call it the Schweinpanzer.

And of course there have been a few glorious fools who've been inspired to scratchbuild the durn thing.

Yes, Model Graphix is a Japanese model magazine.

Equal parts model work, scratchbuilding/kitbashing/conversions and cosplay. I've seen a copy of it (old friend was the Japanese Language Librarian at the National Library in Canberra at the time. It was her copy.).

The one I saw was full of ALIENS stuff (including a platoon of USCM in gear under a 'screaming eagle' banner.

Well a lot of the armorcast titans going around eBay are recasts, maybe you could get an alternate production line model.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Closer to 15mm (they're pigs - short and fat). It is a real shame, that'd be a great comedy IG army!

Wow, this brings back some memories. Early on around 2nd edition 40k, I remember seeing one of these tanks at "Gamers Paridise" store. Really wanted one, but it was pretty far out of my budget at the time.

Kid Kyoto,
Do you have dimensions of the plastic Miyazaki kit? Even if it's 1/72nd, there's still a chance it could work in 28mm if it's big enough.

Well I have one..in my basement, it needs some basic repairs, and has been converted for my Orkish army, ( with a varient turret as well ), but yes its a awesome model, I have been tempted to make a mold and try to cast another one, since it is a fairly simple sculpt.
But its a huge vehicle, and the molds would be very pricey to say the least...hmmm maybe when I get my tax refund

At anyrate I will post a few pics in day or two, after I repair it, ( must look nice for the camera )
