Alright.

I always wanted to play an Armoured company, but because it was no legal list, i abbandoned the whole idea.
But with the new IG codex, and the option of tank squadrons, the ''dream'' is back.
since i do not like the GW leman russ battle tanks that much, i had to come up with something else...
so i got this crazy idea of making my own Imperial guard tanks, using plasticcard.

i have no experience with scratchbuilding what so ever. so this will be a slow log.

anywhooo,

i started easy, building 2 turrets, for a Chimera and a Hellhound.

turrets:

its a small start.

and im facing a problem already. i have no idea yet for making tracks

anyone got some idea's ?

C&C welcome ofcourse

That´s looking nice, they look a bit like FW´s hellhound turrets, which look really nice.

As for tracks, anyone who has built Leman Russ tanks is likely to have quite a few spare, I know I have enough for two or three tanks at least in my bit box.

I´m not sure about how to scratch build tracks, but if you get a hold of some, and make a GS mold, maybe you could mold them off of that, onto a strip of plasticard.

Will be interesting to see where you go with this.

I was looking at something similar - if you use GW tracks, you could mount them to a sort of "sidewall" like the russ kit has. I started making a few out of plasticard over wood. If it has track guards, you don't need all that much track - only the bottom half.

I'd seriously think about molding your stuff in resin. Why make six tanks out of plasticard when you could make one, cast it with about the same amount of effort as making another, then have all you want? It might cost a bit more, but it would save a massive amount of time.

How did you get those corners so well rounded on the turrets?

thanks for the quick replies.

@Xanthos: i do not want to use GW tracks. i want to use/make wider ones.

@ kestral: i thought about making resin casts. but i dont know anything about it though, i know a guy who does know about casting, im gonna ask him what to do.

about the corners. i just filed the corners really well, so that you can barely see the connection of the plasticcard pieces

You can buy tracks separate for a variety of 1/35 scale modern/WW2 tanks that might be suitable.

M-3/M-4 (WW2) and M-113 (modern) tracks are around 10-11mm wide (same as the chimera/Leman Russ). Tiger (WW2) are wide enough to serve as Baneblade tracks.

I'm with The Dreadnote... If those turrets are made with no experience, I'm really looking forward to seeing how this progresses!

As for the turrets, I love them. I keep meaning to try constructing new turrets for my fleet of Chimera.

I'm also in agreement with Kestral. Making resin copies of tank pieces would be pretty simple, especially when it comes to things like tracks. I've cast a couple of bodies and legs with reasonable success, so if you've got access to someone that knows how to do it properly, I'd make use of it

i love what people are able to do with a hobby knife, plasticard, a little bit of glue and a little ingenuity. your turrets look great! and i think i will jump onto the resin bandwagon... it is probably the easiest way for you to obtain a tonne of tracks pieces without having to break the bank. good luck, i can't wait to see what you do next!

By the way, the rules for armored company can be downloaded from the Forge world site here. (edit: sorry, I linked to the wrong page. It's in the IA1 update) And Imperial Armor is apparently legal in most tournaments (at least, that's what one of my tournament-going friends told me).

Awesome turrets and troops so far.
