Orks vs Tau - 500pts

G'day and welcome to my first 5th edition game, my first 40K game in over 10 years and my first battle report on DakkaDakka. Everyone has to (re)start somewhere - so be gentle! This battle took place two weeks ago...

DA DARK ANGELZ (ORKS)
[HQ] Big Mek, Kustom Force Field, Burna, Boss Pole (110pts)
[TR] 11 Shoota boy plus Nob with Slugga, Powerklaw and Boss Pole in a Trukk with Big Shoota, Boarding Plank and Armour Plates (162pts)
[TR] 11 Shoota boy (Big Mek attached) in a Trukk with Big Shoota and Armour Plates (111pts)
[FA] 2 Deffkoptas with twin linked rocket launchas and one with a Buzzsaw (115pts)
TOTAL: 498pts

TAU
[HQ] Commander with two bodyguard in crisis suits.
[TR] 6 Firewarriors
[TR] 6 Firewarriors
[??] 5 Stealth suits
TOTAL: 502pts

MISSION & DEPLOYMENT: Annilation, Dawn of War

PRELUDE
Orks went first. Gleefully I put my trukk with ad Big Mek and boyz centre stage, 24" onto the board, thinking there would be nowhere for the Tau to go. Deffkoptas outflanked. Other trukk and boyz in reserve. The Tau promptly held all in reserve… (stealth suits deepstriking)

TURN 1
With nothing to assault or shoot at, da Big Mek's trukk moved flat out towards the Tau side of the board (though at an angle, avoiding some difficult terrain and allowing me to get behind it easily next turn if need be). The other trukk moved on flat out as well, up the centre towards the first trukk (and its KFF)

The Tau Commander and bodyguard plus two units of fire warriors move on the the board - the Commander to my left, fire warriors to my right. The Commander and bodyguard popped my trukk, causing it to kareen a massive 0" into terrain and Kaboom! killing 3 boyz and wounding da Big Mek. Da boy passed pinning and morale with ease (snake eyes on one!)

NOTE: The Tau player rolled 6 wounds on the Kaboom! I didn't think I would get KFF saves, he thought I would. In the end he diced it and I did - good thing too, or there would have been another 2 dead boyz, not that that would have affected the pinning/morale rolls - but it may have had an impact further on. On rereading the rules I think this is right - as explosion hits to embarked units are treated as if by shooting…

ORKS: 0, TAU: 1

TURN 2
Annoyed, da Big Mek and his remaining boy advanced on the commander and bodyguard and let rip, managing to take down (just!) one of the bodyguard. They promptly fled the table The other trukk continued its advance to support the boyz / make use of the KFF.

The fire warriors took pot shots at da Big Mek and ladz, but to no effect.

ORKS: 2, TAU: 1

TURN 3
Da deffkoptas decided to make an appearance this turn, swooping in from my right (my choice), while da Big Mek, boyz and 2nd trukk approached from the other direction. The trukk boyz cut down 3 firewarriors in a hail of fire, whilst the deffkoptas assaulted, broke and cut down the other unit, for the loss of one wound.

NOTE: For some reason I incorrectly thought and played embarked Orks with assault weapons firing from my fast trukk moving at cruising speed.

NOTE: I didn't realise defenders counter charge and hence wasn't expecting 6 fire warrior attacks in CC against my deffkoptas. Luckily it didn't matter.

Stealth suits deep striked behind ad deffkoptas. They and the firewarriors poured fire in, resulting in wounding the buzzsaw wielding deffkopta and losing the other one.

NOTE: For some reason I incorrectly thought deffkoptas had a 4+/4++ save like warbikes against shooting. Thankfully it wasn't an issue as all weapons fired at them were AP5...

ORKS: 3, TAU: 1

TURN 4
Da Big Mek and his boyz advanced and the trukk advanced through difficult terrain without incident to join them. Their combined fire wiped out the remaining firewarriors. Da deffkopta managed to kill a stealth suit with a well placed rokkit before assaulting with zero effect. He decided it was safer for all concerned not to attempt to leave combat.

Down to just stealth suits in CC, the Tau turn went quickly, finishing off the remaining deffkopta before he had a chance to try his buzzsaw again...

ORKS: 4, TAU: 2

TURN 5
Orks advanced on the stealth suits but failed to spot and/or hit/achieve anything.

Tau retreated and fired at the trukk. Da Big Mek's KFF earnt it's cost back, saving a penetrating and two glancing shots.

NOTE: We were playing KFF giving 4+ obscured save to vehicles.

ORKS: 4, TAU: 2

TURN 6
The trukk advances, unloading da boyz in front of the stealth suits, ready to assault. However, it wasn't to be - as they got a bit carried away shooting, decimating the remaining 4 stealth suits.

With no Tau left on the board, it was game over - for the loss of a trukk, 2 deffkoptas and 3 boyz.

ORKS: 5, TAU: 2

I am looking forward to a rematch without the Ork favouring rules bungling - but it was my first game of 5th edition, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Thanks for reading.
Adrian

EDIT - Removed note on trukk moving flat out = embarked boyz destroyed along with trukk. See comments.

well done. I have only recently started playing again so I feel your pain. There seem to be an endless ammount of pointless rules but the orks are a great army to play. The challenge is generating enough troops and still pay your rent. Do you like deffkoptas? I haven't used them yet.

cry havoc and let slip the poodles of war.

I do like deffkoptas - but at only two games I am hardly an authority They did well here, less so in my Ork vs IG game...

Neither of us apparently realised that destroying a vehicle moving flat out would result in the death of the embarked unit

Ok, is that the way it works? I'm curious myself, as I haven't played since 3rd edition until recently.

On page 70 in my rulebook it says that "Passengers may not embark onto or disembark from a fast vehicle if it has moved (or is going to move) flat out in that Movement phase".

But if you move flat out in your movement phase and your opponent destroys the trukk after his movement phase, then you haven't moved flat out in THAT movement phase, but in the previous one! That's how my group has interpreted it, but we're still debating it.

Paintin' the green tide... one Ork at a time.

Wow! Not what i expected. Tau usually destoy orks since they can shoot them to pieces before they assault. Very interesting game

I usually only read batrep's with eldar or dark eldar, but this was a good read, better than some of the ones that have pics. Good job on the win, and I never knew that happened to units that moved flat out...

Good job. Very few casualties for playing vs tau. HAHAHA, cowardly tqu, running at the first sigh of violent death.

Okay - I think I was somewhat confused The rules do explicitly state during your movement phase - so this is a non issue. I think I must have read a battle report where Eldar had rammed during their movement phase and had their vehicle destroyed along with the embarked troops due to this rule. So it should only be a problem if I tank shokk (with rams) and get death or gloried. I can't ram with trukks - so no issue there!

Part of the reason I posted these up was to help me clarify the rules in my head - so thanks for all your help! I'll remove the note from the report.
