Amazing job Lamby, just amazing! I'm really enjoying your thread and the grimmy yet bright colouring of your miniatures! It's such a difficult combination to achieve but you do it well, sir. Subbed and looking forward to more!

You really do achieve some stunning results Lamby, the rusty metal effect is rather splendid IMHO as it retains a certain working capability but still a sense of degrade.

I also think the contrast of your pallet works well and retains a subtle tone, can I ask how you achieve the rust effect.

Thanks LDD.

- A lot of work went into that rust, so in kind of order (though I jump back and forth in the 'more of everything' stage)...
- Vallejo Model Air Rust (basically a brown) sprayed on, then touched up after the green spray layers, coz i got lazy 3rd time around and didn't mask off the armour
- Dry-brush GW Ryza Rust
- Dry-brush Boltgun Metal
- Winsor+Newton Brown oil wash with some black
- orange-brown pastels (poor man's weathering powder)
- More of everything
- 2nd oil pin wash into the details
- GW Liche Purple nuances
- Final metal highlights with a pencil

In regards to a tutorial, if you trawl back through this thread a few pages there's a few experiments with crackle paint I did which are as good a tutorial as I'm going to do, but if you go to this wonderful thread Eye of Error there is a complete with pictures tutorial that I sort of followed while substituting some colors.

Enjoy!

Another great looking project you have here. Everything looks awesome.

Kruger holds a special place in my heart. Elysium is one of my favorite movies, and your specific reference to the Chemrail (and the scene where it rips that merc apart shooting through a wall) really spoke to me.

Looking forward to more

Xysis - Thanks!
- Glad you liked the Elysium references, loved the movie, i just think it was 'Hollywood cut' in the end... so I eagerly await a Directors cut!
- In the end (my) Kruger's weapon didn't really look like the chemrail, but the inspiration was there!

- with crackle medium, it's a real 'less is more' effect... too much just looks like mud
- I always finish off with very light and very controlled purple washes for the nuance and vibrancy purple brings back to darker colours

After riding on the wave of positivity brought on by all the great comments regarding Zamael the Mad Brute, it is time to get back to the retinues.
Quick recap of where we last left everyone then, and some new WIPs...

First, Inquisitor Kallatar remains as she was... with some messy Brown Stuff sculpting around the belt to clean up, and some major sculpting of her great coat to come:

Deathcult assassin-type has gained a new 'chest' and some fiddly micro-sculpting on the armoured corset she's wearing... she also broke off at the ankle (again!), and is currently waiting on me to make my mind up about her load-out - a reversed knife in each hand, or possibly the DE kusari gama (chain-whip) in the left hand?:

This could be her head... possibly... if my mad plan works out...

Still undecided where this lady is going, she's had some minor cleanup done to her sculpting - I finally found a use for liquid Greenstuff!

A female sniper converted from the Eldar Ranger... probably a member of the Skeleton Crew, as her weapon is very futuristic rather than the steampunk vibe I was going for with Kallatar's retinue:

Scarface here is a swordsman and he's destined for the Ordo Malleus retinue of the Brimstone Inquisitor:

The almost mandatory Cairn Wraith conversion... a very early WIP of Phledexus the Dark Mechanicus Artificer to the Wretched Sons... he's the dude responsible for Zamael's condition:

And finally, the Wretched Sons marine has gained arms and a rather large axe...

Thanks for looking!

All coming together very nicely I see love the pose of Kallatar once you have her finalised she is going to be stunning me thinks

The Assassin also another cool looking pose, intrigued to see the arms layout on this one and weapon choices.

As to the head is that a support structure for building hair onto if not what on earth are you planning

Female sniper simple conversion but nice idea, early days but can see the direction you're heading.

Now the Marine I aint normally a fan of these steroid induced bully boys LOL, how ever I like the almost archaic knightly vibe going on here this is kind of what I wanted the Grey knights to be.

You have almost tempted me to go to the dark side

P.S. the axe arms where are they from ?

LDD - first off, thanks for your comments as always.
- Concerning Kallatar: the thought of all the sculpting she yet requires keeps me awake at nights...

- Concerning the assassin: I'm trying to get a unity to the feel of the Ordo Xenos that (I feel) the retinue of the Brimstone Inquisitor kind of lacks, so I'm working concurrently on the females as a whole, trying for a more steampunk vibe (note the retro-punking of the pistols on the Gunslinger)
- Concerning her head: ... it's support structure for her hair, I'm going to add straps to the mask and have her dreadlocks sort of bursting out in between - the mask is going to get a-steampunkin', too!

- Concerning the sniper: ... her current weapon is very similar to the current Skeleton Crew weapons, but before I finalise things I'm going to do a steampunk version, because I think the Eldar aesthetic that's inherent in the model is more suited to the Ordo Xenos retinue... later I'll post a pic of both weapons and get a bit of a vote thing going on

- Concerning The Ax: Each to his own in regards to true-scale - personally I love Migsula's Alpha Legion, and have always wanted to emulate them... but with a more 30k feel to him (noting the history of the Wretched Sons) rather than the current over-blinged look GW has going for CSMs - I hate those new CSMs - also, The Ax going to receive a similar paint scheme to Zamael, so less bling more corrosion
- His forearms are from the Warhammer Chaos Chosen Command - bloody finecast!
- If you look right back to the beginning of the blog you'll see the Brimstone Inquisitor has the metal equivalent...

Thanks for looking!

Sniper weapon version one was just too fat and futuristic for the steampunkish retinue (to be) of Inquisitor Kallatar:

So went more for a 'La Longue Carabine' feel - initial concept stage:

And current 'wet' GS stage:

When the GS is dry it'll get a good sanding, and the lazloque mechanism and scope will be added...

Tune in again soon!

Dr H - Thanks.

And more progress:
- Shortened the fore-stock to 'float' the barrel a little more, which meant I had to reposition the banding
- Sculpted in the cheek pad
- Added the lazloque mechanism
- Fiddled for ages to get the scope in place - a little bit of hi-tech amongst the steampunk...
- Had left over GS so glued the head in place and sculpted the hood - it's a little fat in areas, but some careful sanding will fix that

- Sniper-girl is close to completion...

Thanks for looking!

It seems the extended painting period of the Brute sent me into a modelling frenzy, as I now have 6 uncompleted conversions and Fury the Gunslinger staring at me, unpainted and unloved...

Concerning Scarface, Tulkas (over at Ammobunker) picked up on the fact that I had put a suppressor on a las-pistol and suggested I replace the charge pack with a solid round pistol mag -
it looks pretty good:

- I've also tested a second shoulder pad here - thoughts?

- And it probably should be said, he's still pretty rough around the edges - all that messy sculpting needs cleaning up

Concerning Sniper Girl, Gelfin (also over at Ammobunker) noticed she's using a 'lasloque' with a solid round mag in the rifle and a lasgun charge pack on her belt as ammo...
So I've removed the (boltgun) mag and it makes the whole weapon sleeker anyway - there is a question of whether to add a power pack of some kind to her backpack and run a cable to it - thoughts?

- Also, I've replaced the las-charge pack with a very small pistol (taken from the FW Tallarn snipers kit), because no self-respecting sniper goes into the field with just the long-gun... no pic yet

Thanks for looking!

These conversions look great (as always)!
I think you could do without a backpack and cables. As a sniper, a backpack and cables would probably be detrimental. Maybe a sleek power pack on the bottom?
Also, I love the sword on Scarface. Great work!

- I've left the sniper alone for now, I think she's done apart from some minor cleanup

And I think Scarface is done:

- I used Brown Stuff mostly on this guy, but I'm finding it gets a bit crumbly when you try and sand it - so after this I'm going back to a GS/milliput mixture
- The green moss growing all over him is liquid GS that is thinned down to paint consistency and applied with a brush to blend the Brown Stuff with the plastic

Finally, a question - What retinue should I put him in? (which therefore determines his paint scheme?):
- Ordo Malleus with the Brimstone Inquisitor - thus clad in red and yellow? or
- The Skeleton Crew - thus clad in yellow and brown?

- I might even try some freehand on his shoulder pads... ooo scary...

- With that sword hilt he could actually be renamed Inigo Montoya (though his sabre would be too heavy for proper fencing!)

Inigo Montoya: "You are using Bonetti's Defense against me, ah?"
Man in Black: "I thought it fitting considering the rocky terrain."
Inigo Montoya: "Naturally, you must expect me to attack with Capo Ferro?"
Man in Black: "Naturally, but I find that Thibault cancels out Capo Ferro. Don't you?"
Inigo Montoya: "Unless the enemy has studied his Agrippa... which I have!"

- I personally use the yellow milliput, only because it's cheaper than the white

Llamahead - Thanks! - I might introduce some red elements into him to do just that!

Meanwhile, Brown Stuff, liquid GS, excess GS/milliput and a whole range of bits have congealed into this axe-weilding Wretched Sons Astartes:

Sharp eyes might note the axe head was originally cast in GS/milliput from a press-mold, and is now Brown Stuff - I decided I wanted the Chaos (half) stars from the original Warriors of Chaos Chosen weapon.

The Ax will feature alongside Zamael the Helbrute as foes for my Inqu][sitor retinues.

Thanks for looking!

On another note - I was asked over at B+C what my 'process' was... thought it was an interesting question, here's my rambling answer:

I have a wandering, encompassing 'plan' that revolves around a 25 year 'history' I've developed following the Brimstone Inquisitor of the Ordo Malleus and Inquisitor Kallatar of the Ordo Xenos - and various characters caught up along the way - starting with a battle known as the Xolomon Deviance, the initial and long-term fall-out from that incident, and moving into hunting down the emerging Cult of Skvorax... it's kind of got away from me a bit though, because the original cultist-based 'enemy' seems to have turned into the Wretched Sons, who came about solely because of the build of the Helbrute Zamael... you can see why I call it 'wandering'...

I build mostly on a whim: I see a particular model, a conversion plan evolves in my head - usually when I should be working - I jot down some notes, gather bits and then go at it, following the Cool Before Rules approach so there's not any real list or plan in the gaming sense - more like, say, a vague notion of playing the Skeleton Crew as 'counts as' Imperial Guard...

I get side-tracked from one half-finished conversion to start a new one fairly regularly - in fact I was so bad at this during the construction of my CSMs the Legion of Thorns that I made a new rule for Inqu][sitor, which was Build One, Paint One... yeah, I broke that rule after the first model!

I'm sort-of working towards an Inquisitor Armies on Parade entry, with both the Ordo Malleus and Xenos retinues alongside a bigger group of Skeleton Crew 'muscle'... unfortunately, due to an international move back to Australia in August, my minis will be in a shipping container for about 3 months, so I'll miss 2014 AoP... soldier on!

Fluff coagulates in my head while building, and I spend a bit of time fitting each individual's story into my long-term story arc - which causes all sorts of problems, when something like the sudden and unplanned emergence of the CSM/Dark Mechanicus Wretched Sons occurs!

The Skeleton Crew models are another example of this, I first painted Kruger in the Ordo Malleus colors but it didn't look right, so halfway through I stripped him back, re-primed him, painted him yellow and spattered brown on him... the next morning I wrote the background of the Skeleton Crew into the 'history'. When the metal Voystroyan sniper fell into my hands, he was alway going to be a hard-hitter for the Skeleton Crew... mostly because of the awesome sculpt, but also 'cos I like building guns...

I rarely play, I prefer to build and paint, in that order.

When I do play - at the moment - it is only with my son, and we play using Space Hulk rules, mostly because it's fast, simple and fun! At some stage - after we return to Australia - I'd like to learn 'proper' Inq28 or Inquisimunda.
