Like the title says, How do you play them? What units should I get mixed responses all the time, like bring on destroyer types and warriors with a destroyer lord and that liths suck, or that I need 2 liths no scarabs and on heavy destroyers, etc. etc.

So what do you all think are best choices for 1500-2000 pt games?

Do YOU think this is a competitive/cheese list, or a casual list?

First off, let me say that 5th edition has made playing Necrons considerably more difficult. There are builds that work, and work quite well, but at the same time there are some armies that you simply have no chance agaisnt. That being said, I will lay out some guidelines.

Warriors are simply dead weight in 5th edition. They can get overrun and destroyed on combat so easily that these things are a liability. My advice is to take the minimum you can, meaning two squads of ten.

I use to not like Ctan, but 5th edition changed my thinking. for a 2000 point game, I would take the Deceiver.

Now there are a few ways to decide the rest of your army. As there are multiple builds that can work. They all however have one thing in common: Staying out of Close combat. You can do this several ways:

Take immortals for more necron models, and then screen them with scarabs to keep them out of assault.

Take destroyers to be too fast to run down, and have longer range to shoot at the enemy for longer.

Use monoliths to screen your forces.

For example, I will lay out some lists for you, all of which would be pretty good at 2000

Deceiver
10 warriors
10 warriors
9 immortals
9 immortals
9 immortals
5 scarabs
5 scarabs
Monolith
Monolith

With this, you have pretty good fire power, and can protect your phalanx by putting a monolith on either side of your forces, and scrabs out in front. I works pretty well, unless someone can drop the monoliths. Which, is never good.
Also

Deciever
10 warriors
10 warriors
5 destroyers
5 destroyers
5 destroyers
Monolith
Monolith
2x tomb spyder

Or even something as simple as this:

Lord With orb, Veil
10 warriors
10 warriors
10 immortals
10 immortals
10 immortals
4 destroyers
4 destroyers
4 destroyers

I have seen these lists, or versions very close to them all prefrom well. The key, is how you play the lists. Avoid combat, and bring lots of firepower and you can do pretty well with Necrons.
Unless of course you fight a Hard Core mech gaurd player with lots of artillery shielded by chimeras. Then, you lose.

I'm trying to find a post that someone else made that was titled "so you wanna play necrons"

Bassicly, 20 warriors and the Decevier seems to be a good core for necrons in 5th. Then you have do decide if you like Immortals, or Destroyers. if you happen to like destroyers you can probably run 9-12 of them, and still have room for a monolith I think. I've seen plenty of weird builds as well, one blogger runs scarabs, and sticks his Lord with destroyer-body+warscythe in there. Then he has them turbo-boost for a 2+ cover save. Norbu the Destroyer ran a CC necron list (?!) in this battle report Apparantly Immortal spam is what everyone did in 4th edition because glances could kill vehicles. Immortals are still good but they can only silence vehicles, can't blow them up.

There's word on the web that Necrons are getting an update....but I remain unconvinced. for now you should only need 20 warriors.

40k enthusiast has a Necron Public service announcement post somewhere here on Dakka. I agree with 95% of it. If you can find that, it will help a lot.

Here's the one and only way to make a Necron army that's competitive atm:

Proxy. Call your deceiver a lash prince, your necrons plague marines, your flayed ones khorne berzerkers, and your destroyers bikers.

Other than that, destroyers are pretty much always worth having. They're probably the best overall unit in the codex.

Really? You're telling him to do better by proxying Chaos Bikes? Lash Princes and Plague Marines are by no means an auto-win and 'zerkers are reasonably lacking in comparison to regular CSM. I'm going to have to completely disagree with what you said.

Battle wagons, especially if they have Deff Rollas are a problem. But remember, they are open topped, so gauss will work a bit better. If its backed up by a KFF, it is seriously hard to deal with though...

Throwing the deceiver at the battle wagon pack is one idea. But, what you are describing is something necrons dont really have an easy answer for. Since deff rollas can pretty easily destroy the typically indestructible Monolith.

this guy has a few necron tactics videos. There's one where he uses the deceiver to split up the opponents army which I thought was pretty clever. I dunno how useful it'll be, just thought I'd throw it in there
