Alright, so I bought the Assault on Black Reach set as a starter kit to warhammer 40k and tried to think up some unique paint schemes.
I love everything about orks and decided to stick with them, but I don't much like the un-originality of painting them the generic green
(The green DOES look awesome, but I wanted something REALLY unique).
When I broke out the paints and brush an idea popped. Why not paint them red? (sorry in advance for the giant pics, first post on dakka!)

So, after now painting three of them (The third one's a nob), I've realized that I had never seen a red-skinned ork before. I mean EVER.
So, now I'm wondering: Is there a reason? Is there some sort of unspoken rule against red orks?
Should I grab some orkhide shade and run with the norm?
I'd really like some feedback here before I resume the fetal position in my 'worrying' spot in the corner .
Cheers mates,
H.A.

Mmm, very nice! Orks are supposed to be a sort of fungus, so I think the red is more than allright. It's quite striking actually. I think they will make slightly better run rolls like this ;-) If you want to have a silly edge on then, I'd reccomend adding white spots to them for that proper "poisonous mushroom"-look.

For your pictures, check out he dakka gallery function. It is rather easy to get proper sizes for the forums there.

And warmly welcome to dakka!

Some fluff purists may demand you to soak your orks into a tub of Simple Green, scrub off the paintwork, and do it all again in proppa orky green. But dude, it's your orks, run with it. You're doing a great job so far, so keep it up.

Ork's are just green cause they're orks. It's a simple fact of the grimdark universe.

Looking really good, I love the idea, and you've done a great job!

If I may offer a little advice based on what I can see in the pics?

Looks like you had a little trouble getting good coverage of the bronze colour?
Try mixing it with a brown paint for the basecoat, then layer the normal colour over it.
GW example here, this helped me loads with doing gold.

The loincloth on the Ork on the right looks a little blotchy, the transition is a bit harsh.
Try using a light basecoat (Dheneb Stone maybe?) and use a GW wash in the reccesses to shade it.
OR, stick to your current method, but use more colours for a smoother transition, GW example here

Actually, old fluff supports Orks of many colors! So not only is it permissive, it's openly agreeable!

Some people might be annoyed, as tradition is that all Orks are green. But there really isn't anything saying they HAVE to be or necessarily all are. I seem to remember a Chapter Approved that featured purple and pink Orks.... not quite as interesting as red, but still different at least!

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

Fun Ork colors unite . I went with pink for mine. I even used some fun colors on the clothing.

Orks aren't red, change it now! I'm kidding, they look good, especially for your first models. However, if you're gonna go with red fungus, they all need white spots a-la:

Not to make your idea less cool, but there have been a lot of people that have done red orks. Blue, green, black, and red are all fairly common throughout the history of orkz. Still a great way to stand out as the green versions are much more prevalent.

Thanks for the positive feedback and tips, everyone!
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one!
BTW, For the skin I used a chaos black undercoat,
then scab red for the undertone, gore red for the midtone
and blood red for the highlights.

The loincloth on the Ork on the right looks a little blotchy, the transition is a bit harsh.

Yeah, I realized how blotchy it looked after seeing the pictures
and I thought I might show you my nob now (It's equally blotchy)
before I start using your technique. I'll attach some pics so you can see what I mean.

Rightio,
H.A.

(P.S. sorry for the unfocused-ness in a few of the photos)

You can argue wether or not red is allowed on orks for the rest of time.
what really matters is an awesome paint job, i suggest a few washes and highlights to add depth, also remember that the bigger the ork the darker his skin

For me there are no rules when it comes to choosing colours .

Of course there are things that look terrible , dont work out , never actually get painted on a model , but there are no boundaries imo .

And I love the red orks

Your paintjob looks good. I guess the reason that you don't see non-green Orks very often is that you also don't see bright orange humans running around - just not a traditional color for them.
