Here’s a quick round up of my games at Platinum Devil. (Apologies; the first 4 games have no pics, the last 2 have plenty of pics! I left my camera at the hotel...) But, I'm sure my opponents will have some photo’s up later, showing some scenes from my epic battles. There were plenty of camera's around! A big-up to Ketara for organising the event!

My list; I tried to run a marine gun-line. There were a few units that I think I’d change around in future. I’ll go into that at the end. 1000pts is pretty tough point limit for Marines, so rather than an all-comers list, I went with a theme and tried to stick to it.

Librarian; Force dome/gate
Tac squad, Multimelta, melta, p/fist and combi melta. Las/plas Razorback
Tac squad, M/L, flamer, p/fist T/L-las Razorback
Dread; M/L and assault cannon
Dakka pred
2x MM/HF speeders

Game 1 vs. Reds8ns CSM list. Annihilation/ table halves

Daemon Prince - Wings, Mark of Slaanesh, Lash
Noise Marines - 1 Sonic Blaster and Blastmaster in Rhino
Noise Marines - 1 Sonic Blaster and Blastmaster in Rhino
Noise Marines - 1 Sonic Blaster and Blastmaster
Defiler
2 Obliterators

The board was pretty spartan, apart from a giant mountain in the middle. I deployed most of my army in cover, across from the bulk of his troops on the left hand side. My speeders deployed over the other side to try and flank him, I then proceeded to ‘try’ to do some shooting! We traded some heavy fire for a few turns and I tried to ignore the DP as it was hidden away behind the mountain anyway. I popped one rhino and three of its occupants and immobilised another rhino. On the other flank, the speeders buzzed around his oblits for a couple of turns before being vaporised. Turn 3, his DP overturned the pred. and started eating up my entire line. (I was unlucky with some rolling, especially wounding/penetrating/hood, but was generally outplayed.) Still, some nice moments in the game; a heroic but doomed gate across the board, a vet sergeant standing up to the DP! However, it wasn’t long before I was lashed and wiped off the board. Result: Massacre loss, Oh deary, deary me. Still, a good game, chin-up and all that! Thanks Red!

Lessons learned; Blastmaster squads and the defiler B/C are nasty, and Red was a dead eye for no scatter! I've learned to respect them. We chatted about our tactics afterwards, there wasn’t too much else I could of done, except maybe kept the speeders with the rest of the troops to give a bit more armour saturation over that side. To be fair though, they may have only helped me limp on for another turn.
Finally I guess, always, always take null zone over force dome… I tried to be true to my theme, so I picked powers that might keep my troops alive a bit longer (Dome) and hopefully contest last turn objectives (Gate). But, I think I only used dome once in the whole tournament.

- More to follow!

Game 2 vs Leggy’s Ad-mech. Beacon drop – 5 moveable objectives.

His visually superb list;

TechMagos (Primaris Psyker.)
Skitarii (Veterans) in a Chimera
Electropriests (Penal Legionnaires)
Knight (Leman Russ)
Knight (Leman Russ)
Lancer (Devildog)
2 Sentinels with autocannons.

Deployment; The terrain was a full-on Tau city, beautifully constructed by KilKrazy. So, lots of cover. Some of these details are a bit hazy, so leggy, feel free to amend!
From the off I was forced to split my meagre forces so as to hold on to the two beacons closest to my deployment. On my left I kept the dread and a combat squad in heavy cover. Whilst on the on the right another combat squad, ahead of them my armoured column. The Predator with razorbacks behind, for some objective grabbing.

Early game: The lancer and one knight headed to cut off my armour, whilst the other moved to threaten my left combat squad. Ahead of his lines two sentinels scouted around some Tau buildings taking pot shots at my men. His ground troops held two beacons in his terrain.
His armour plowed forward and concentrated their fire on the speeders. I was amazed at how much fire these skimmers can attract. However, he also singled out the Predator with a shot from the Lancer's melta cannon and wrecked it, (but it didn’t explode…) at the head of the column. A headache for me as it took two turns of manoeuvering to get the R/backs out in the open to contest. 2 objectives each

Midgame: I tried to limit his transport, (a rather nice Chimera on ad-mech legs!) with the speeders, which I achieved, the explosion took out a few of his troops too. But I couldn’t ignore the knights B/C’s either. I lost a squad early on to B/C fire and was pretty wary about it. I picked off a sentinel and kept shaking the Knights, so they couldn’t fire. However, with the speeders engaged else where I was forced to use las-cannons, hence I couldn’t wreck them! (This was due to leggy’s good deployment) 2 objectives each, the final one heavily contested.

Endgame: On the right, I was rapidly running out of Marines from various hits from weapons, and due to the wrecked Predator early on my R/backs were nowhere near where they wanted to be. The final remaining mobile R/back with a squad in, shot forward and contested the middle objective. The knight was immobilized, and the lancer out of position, but not destroyed. I think it had concentrated its fire on the H/F speeders that could hurt his backline.
On the left I only had 2 Marines left, so I decided to, ahem, redeploy further away from his psyker and tanks. The marines consolidated further back in cover whilst the dread crashed forward and assaulted the other immobilized knight, (One of my tourney moments!) and stopped it from firing. 2 objectives each and 1 contested. Bottom of turn five we roll a one. It’s over, - Draw!

Lessons learned; I usually use the Predator front armour to cover the vulnerable r/backs and tried to do so again here. But the narrow Tau streets and good target priority from Leggy really hurt me. Once the Pred was a smoking wreck it took a long time for the R/backs to redeploy, so I never got to contest his beacons. I’ll have to rethink my deployment on terrain heavy boards.
The last minute charge from the dread probably got me the draw. I kept the Knights from firing their B/C’s (A lesson learned from round one!) most of the game, but without his charge and subsequent crew stunned result, the left knight could’ve opened fire on the only two men I had left holding my left beacon.
Finally, the speeders did really well for me again. Tying up a lot of fire and the psykers attentions, whilst wrecking a chimera and shaking the lancer. Good game Leggy!

Thats pretty much all the important stuff from the game. You remembered way more than i could've!

Minor bits
-6 objectives, there was another on your side near the middle, not far from the epic dread-knight clash. No-one got it.
- I had a second Skitarii squad with the heavy bolter& snipers camped in my deployment.
-Your Pred was only immobilised. It got in the way of your stuff, but still gave out some dakka!

I think what saved me from losing this was the lucky early hit that immobilised your Pred without removing it it or turning it into cover. Had I rolled any other result you could've got those razorbacks and marines out quicker which would've caused me far too much trouble in my back line.

Your dread trying (and nearly succeeding) to kick my knight to death was probably my favourite bit of the tourney

yeah,

That is quite the match up. Strength 6 (firebase dread) rear armour of the knight AV11?
Made me want the Knight (Leman Russ) to have a WS!

Panic...

Leman Russ Battle tanks are AV10 at the rear. Worse, it was immobilised too.

Fluffwise, this Dread would eventually have taken down a Knight Titan BY KICKING ITS SHINS ALONE.

Game 3 vs. Fifty’s Mentor legion (blood angel) list, Capture and control, table quarters

Captain, p/fist
Tac. squad M/L, flamer, Rhino
Tac. squad M/L, flamer
Triple las predator
5 x regular Terminators
Scout squad bolt pistol/hand weapons.

Deployment: We both set up in opposite corners of the board. I was well aware of his deep striking terminators, so kept two combat squads and the dread at my objective. He set up in a ruined temple across the board and with various tank traps scattered about, both my pred and razor backs and his vehicles would be hurtling past one another trading fire. Or so I thought!

Early game: My plan was to hold my own objective, whilst sending in the speeders to contest his; simple! Not quite… With fifty playing as a blood angel successor, I should have been prepared for his jet powered rhino and pred, but I was still shocked by the speed they rocketed across the board. Especially as it contrasted with my pedestrian armour! I didn’t want that rhino near my objective. So I poured as much heavy fire at it as I could, but it all it ended up with was a shaken result. I also flamed his scouts that were skulking around near my deployment zone. 1 objective each.

Midgame: I was so frustrated by his fast moving rhino, now within 7-8 inches of contesting I poured everything I had at it. Two multimelta shots; nothing doing. Two Krak missiles; Nada, both didn’t penetrate. Las cannon, straight out the other side. Finally, after all that, a las-cannon, my final heavy weapon, (cue nervous rolling,) finally took the beast down. But its mission had been accomplished! Thankfully, Fifty’s Termies were off duty for the four turns…
My tanks keep rolling forward, although one of the r/backs gets immobilised and the las-cannon gets shot off of the other. The other speeder that flamed the scouts flies behind Fifty’s lines to contest. I hold mine, fifty’s is contested.

Endgame; the Rhino had taken up too much of my precious time and a speeder had had to turn back to flame the now foot slogging marines close to my objective. A round of rapid fire bolters together with the flamer, reduces them to three men. They hold and melta-bomb the speeder first time. Typical! The other, contesting speeder was eying up a wonderful line of marines with his flamer too. Fifty tried desperately to stop it with a hail of bolter rounds, looking for glances. My smug smile turned to a grimace when his captain, hidden away all game pulls off the shot of the game and takes off the heavy flamer with his bolt pistol.
Finally on turn five the termies appear, but deep strike too far away to contest my objective and Fifty’s las pred, calmly turns and shows my men how to fire under pressure. He unloads the three las cannons into the speeder; boom. Time is called. 1 objective each; draw!

Lessons learned; Beware of fast Rhino’s. Really. In two turns Fifty was close to contesting my objective. Also, it proves that everything has a use, even extra armour and an extra storm-bolter on a Rhino. These took the heat out of my shooting pretty effectively. In retrospect, I think I should have sent both speeders to contest and let the combat squads deal with the marines at my lines. But, I only had that option because of fifty’s bad luck with his reserve rolls with the termies. The speeders again were my best units on the board. Accounting for a whole load of tac. marines, a squad of scouts and still managing to contest at the top of turn five. I think another turn would have seen us both contest each other’s objectives, so it was a fair result overall. Fifty had the highs of watching multimeltas bounce off his rhino, (My low point) and the lows of ‘no show’ termies. (My high point!!) Still, them’s the breaks. Cheers Fifty!

The ruins of the Palace of Thorns

That third game was awesome. Everything went down pretty much as your described it. Check my own Bet Rep - we have minor differences, but that is all.

One thing though, you missed off the Assault Cannon and a Heavy Flamer at rear armour from your list of things that fired at my Rhino!

My bad luck with Terminator deployment was more than made up for with the amount of damage that Rhino absorbed!

All in all, we both made very good drives to contest the other player's objective, but held just enough back to defend our own.

^^I'm still trying to forget that shooting phase!

Your captain's bolt pistol shot was for me, the best, make or break moment!

A six, a six and then a weapon destroyed on the damage table! That, is some pro rolling!

You failed a cover save against that shot from my Captain too.

I was not even sure I should take the shot, but you are the one who said I could see enough to have a shot!

The whole day was like that though, good sports :-)

Game 4 vs. Tp1983’s Mech-guard. Seize-ground variant with 4 portal gates that double as objectives. (Random outcome as to where the unit lands if they enter a portal…)

His list;

Company Command Squad in Chimera with Heavy Flamers
Ratling Snipers
Veterans with Autocannon in Chimera with Autocannon
Veterans with Autocannon in Chimera with Multilaser
Leman Russ Punisher
Medusa
Basilisk

This was the last game of the day, and, Tom was gracious enough to offer me a beer to go along with battle. Lovely! Tom, if I miss anything, feel free to amend!
There was plenty of terrain across the board. I got first turn and took it. Tom kept a lot off the board in reserve. (I was pretty worried at this point, as he had nearly as much armour as I had heavy weapons!)

Deployment; I split into two to cover the two closest objectives, hoping to teleport around a bit later. The Speeders were hidden at the back, awaiting the arrival of his ordinance. My armoured column deployed on my right eying up his CCS.

Early game; I moved up some combat squads to secure objectives and rolled the Pred and dread forward. I kept the R/backs at a distance for some long range sniping. Early doors, it was looking good, the speeders wiped the basilisk and the Medusa and I exploded the CCS Chimera with a Las-cannon. His troops made it out in good order. One objective of his was too far away for me to contest, so I was gunning for the right hand objective, but it was surrounded by tanks. Although, there was only a single squad of men, if I could just get them in HtH...! 2 objectives each.

Midgame; The LR punisher moves up and unloads on a combat squad holding an objective in cover. He wipes them. Hmmm. Never ignore tanks with strange gatling weapons on their turrets! This now means that he has two objectives to my one. I drop one squad off at the objective I hold and the other one goes through the portal in an attempt to contest one of his. I get a six, which means a deep strike anywhere on the board so I land them behind his lines. My tanks pop another Chimera and shake the LR. I cut down his exposed CCS to just the captain. My speeders get taken down by a storm of multilaser and melta fire and one of the R/backs gets nailed by autocannon fire. Tom has 2 objectives, I have one.

Endgame; The lone CCS captain holds his nerve and steps up in front of my oncoming Pred and immobilizes it with a plasma pistol shot. – A nice moment! Tom splits his fire between my squads in cover, to try and thin them down, and the combat squad eying up his guard behind his lines. I lose a couple of men holding the objective, but the most of the marines make their saves. The ratlings finally come in from reserves and position themselves between my men and his backline. I charge in and wipe the ratlings, putting me just in contesting range. Time is called! We both hold one objective, and one is contested. Draw! Again!

Lessons learned: I really enjoyed this game, and I updated my files on another of the Guards’ wonderful array of tanks. I think my target priority was okay, taking out the artillery first. The las-cannons that hit the LR bounced off his tough front armour and the punisher made me pay for it. I fluffed my saves and was shot off of an objective. I really thought I might steal it at the death, but the ratling move was genius by Tom, as they effectively stopped me assaulting his unit holding the beacon. I was also impressed by the amount of morale checks Tom passed, they helped to keep him fighting to the end. Speeders were again instrumental, nailing his basilisk and Medusa and drawing incredible amounts of fire.
Lastly, I think should have been more aggressive with my marines, but after the storm of shots that nailed my first combat squad I was particularly wary of the punisher. Thanks Tom, now I owe you a beer!
