I have begun detailing the building. As you can see, I am hugely indebted to the 'Warriors of Ultramar' log which has been a great inspiration. Thanks Connann.

The exterior is almost done now. The drain pipe needs a little more work so that it has some fastenings to hold it to the building.

I love the brickwork, what did you sculpt it out of? DAS clay? green stuff? something better? I like it.

Thanks for the encouraging comments guys.

s.j.mccartney, I didn't sculpt the brickwork, I cheated and used textured plasticard instead. It is much more detailed than anything I could sculpt and certainly a lot quicker and easier than making each brick by hand.

I'm still working on the guardsman in urban camo but I can't get the colour scheme right. I'll post some photos tomorrow so you can see what you think.

Here are some wip shots of my chimera. In the photos it looks lighter than in real life, the camera seems to have bleached some of the colour out. Anyway, these pictures will give you a fairly good idea of how it looks. Here you can see it basecoated:

and after some weathering was added:

The next stage was to shade the armour plates and rivets. This was achieved with oil paints thinned with white spirits. I'm pretty pleased with how this turned out:

I'm really pleased with how the rear hatch turned out.

Here's a quick update of progress on the turret. I did have a minor mishap, when I applied the purity seal varnish bits of the turret went white. Does anyone know what caused this to happen? It hasn't happened to me before and I'm using the same technique as I did for the rest of the tank. The only thing that I can think of is that maybe it was a bit wet and this has affected it.

@infilTRAITOR: I'm glad I've inspired you with your own renegades.

@s.j.mccartney: the paint chips are a mix of black and scorched brown applied with a sponge. I then added to and refined this effect with a brush concentrating on those areas that would recieve the most damage. A good example of this is the rear hatch.

@Deff Dread: I still haven't settled on a colour scheme for the grunts yet, but I was thinking of using this one (scroll down to the bottom of the page):

I really like the weathering. Not sure about the purity seal issue... I will be looking at what people say, since I have can, but haven't used it yet. I have been using Tamiya clear coat and Testors Dull Coat for most of my sealer needs.

I have some Testor's Dull Coat too but in this instance I wanted something that I could spray on. Is Dull Coat suitable for use in an airbrush and if so what does one use in order to thin it?

For the Testor's Dull Coat I actually have both the bottle and a spray can version. For the smaller models I usually use the bottle for brushing it on and for the larger models and my terrain I use the spray can version, warning: sometimes the consistency of the spray is questionable. For the Tamiya clear coat, I only have the spray can version, but it gives me a slight sheen, so I am not a fan for using it as pure sealer, unless I want a little shine, I have read that some using it, then put a dull coat after to even it out, but I have not tried..

As such, I haven't had the need to use the airbrush for any of the clear or dull coats. (I am also real new to airbrushing too though, as so far I have only used an airbrush for basecoating)

DUDE this totaly reminds *or is based* on the traitors in short story FIRES OF WAR in the heroes of the space marines novel, if it isnt than read that book cause you should so put in the evil preachers with eviscirators and the speaker as your leader

here ill quote the description of the traitors from the story for those who havnt read or herd it

"Tonnhauser saw a figure scuttle through the fire-limned gouge in the plastek. It was a man, or atleast a dishevelled interpritation of one, clad in rags and flak armor. His hair was sheared roughly all the way down to the skull. Hate-filled eyes caught sight of tennhauser as the wretch cast about the room. But it was the mouth that have the lyal stratosan pause. It was sewn gak with thick black wire, the lips and cheeks shot through with purple-blue viens."

That's quite a coincidence, I haven't read Fires of War. I just used the Warhammer flagellant head because I thought it looked suitably evil.

As for the preachers, I'm thinking of adding the FW Nurgle preachers at some point in the future, I need to get some infantry painted up first though. The only thing that's putting me off is the fact that the FW renegades are a real pain to put together.

Here is the finished chimera. I tried a number of new techniques for the first time on this model (airbrusing, oil painting) and I'm really pleased with how it turned out. I may applied some etched brass decals to make it look more like a renegade vehicle as at the moment it could still be imperial. I have some on order from FW so I'll see how it looks when they arrive.

Anyway, here are the pictures:

This happens with clear coats sometimes, no one ever seems to be sure if its an issue with them being mixed properly or a humidity issue.

Try rubbing alcohol, I believe on your side of the pond theyre called Medical Spirits? Ive had some luck using it to remove that foggy haze before.

I've finished the chapter of my thesis that I was working on so I should have plenty of time this week for modelling and painting, so look out for plenty of updates over the next few days. First up are some new purchases I made from Forge World, the militia tank crew and some brass etched decals that I'm looking forward to trying out:

I have also finished assembling some guardsmen. These were a real pain to put together as the FW resin pieces are slightly smaller than the plastic cadian parts so I had trouble getting the wrists to meet the hands on those models holding their guns with two hands. This ended up being quite a fiddly and time consuming process and resulted in lots of gaps which needed to be filled. Anyway, they are finally assembled and primed ready for painting. I am going to go with my original desert yellow colour scheme to represent the ash wastes of Vraks.

Group shot:

Vox caster and grunt:

In addition to getting the troops ready I have also begun to assemble another chimera. I won't post any progress shots as I'm sure you're all aware of what a half-built chimera looks like. I would however like to share this photo of the dozer blade with you. I've added extra detailing including hydraulics and a couple of extra rivets. I may add more rivets along the top back of the blade to match those on the front but I'm not sure it's worth the effort. Anyway, here's the pic:

I plan on spending the rest of the day working on the chimera. I'd quite like to add a bit of extra detail to the rest of the tank too: track hangers, tow cables and so on. If any treadheads out there have any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

The infantry have now been basecoated with Desert Yellow and shaded with Burnt Umber. I haven't been able to get the lighting right in order to get any decent pictures, but at this stage there isn't really much to see anyway. I have also been working on the chimera. In my last post I was undecided on whether or not I should add some rivets to the dozer blade but inspired by reading Brother Argos's blog I feel that I should put in that extra bit of effort in order to add extra detail to my models. So here is the finished dozer blade:

I've also added a few other extras to the chimera. I wanted to convey the fact that this is a former imperial tank taken out of storage and so here you can see where the renegades have taken their grinders to the much-hated imperial iconography:

And here are some spare track links and track hangers. The hangers were made out of little strips of brass and bass rod was added to the tracks:

I didn't really like the look of the tow cables on the accessory sprue so I cut off the ends and added them to a length of brass picture-hanging wire which I think looks much more realistic than the plastic cable. I haven't glued this down yet, I'm still thinking of exactly how to place it and what I kind of fastenings I need to model on in order to make it look like it is strapped to the tank and not just stuck there. Any suggestions?

I modelled on a bit of is some battle damage to show that this is a well-used vehicle. This was achieved by dremmeling out the back of the trackguard to make it much thinner and then tearing and bending it to look like ripped steel. Hopefully it looks realistic enough:

Let me know what you think.

That Chimera is gorgeous. The weathering is tasteful but in good enough quanitity to make a great aesthetic effect on the whole image of the APC. Bravo. Looking forward to more incredible updates

Thanks for the comments guys. I appreciate your support on this blog.

@ Smiling Assassin: I'm glad you like the battle damage. I want to keep this army subtle and not go way overboard with battle damage and corrosion, I want them to look used, not like total wrecks. These guys may be evil but they are still soldiers afterall and their equipment and vehicles should look servicable.

I've had the brass decals lying around on my desk for a few days now and thought its about time to add some marks of my army's new allegiance to the dark gods! After priming the decals black while they were still on the sprue I then sponged them with scorched brown, dark flesh and blazing orange. This left me with some great looking rust. The sponge technique added subtle texture to the decals which you might not be able to make out on the photos. They were then glued in place on my first chimera. Again, I didn't want to go OTT with the chaos symbols:
