Hi everyone,
I'm new to dakkadakka so hello to you all. First off I'll introduce myself. I live in Lancaster (that's Lancaster in England, not the one in Washington where the Douglas Coupland novel is set) and I'm a PhD student. I've been painting on and off for about 13 years now. After some time away from the hobby I'm about to embark upon a new project which I thought I'd share with you all.
Here is a test model for my proposed army of renegade militia. I want these guys to look like fairly realistic soldiers, so no bright colours, huge spikes and tentacles. I've seen plenty of excellent chaos models that use those sorts of techniques to great effect but I'm looking to take a slightly different approach here. As these guys are loyalist troops that have turned traitor I want a colour scheme that wouldn't look out of place on a regular guardsman but 'chaos-ed' up a bit: battered, chipped armour, torn clothing and chaos iconocraphy painted on by the individual troopers.
Here is the test model:
While I am happy with the fatigues I not convined by the colour of the armour plates. Has any one got any ideas for alternative colours? I was thinking maybe grey-green, more in line with traditional Cadians. Like this guy:
http://www.coolminiornot.com/187993
Let me know what you think. I'd also really apprecdiate it if people could post images of any particularly cool renegade models that I could use for inspiration.
Thanks in advance : )

I think both the fatigues and shoulderpads looks great. Maybe slightly overweathered on the chestpiece, but otherwise it's really good.

Welcome, looking good so far.Maybe their armour could be redish or a kind of nurgle green to show off patronage of a certain dark god.Maybe this will help a bit: http://s3.zetaboards.com/The_Ammobunker/topic/177517/1/
It might give you an idea for a conversion or something, and it showcases the nurgle green colour.
What rule set you playing with?

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm glad you like my work so far.
Thanks for the link Deff Dread, those tanks look great. I'm planning on building a chimera or possibly two over the weekend while I wait for my FW upgrade sets to arrive.
Here is a possible alternative colour scheme. It fits in with my remit of not looking out of place on a loyalist but would also fit well with a nurgle themed army. The FW nurgle preachers certainly are cool models and I'd love to include some at a later date.
One thing I am considering is keeping my original brown colour scheme but maybe lightening it a bit. The FW sets have more areas to play around with than the standard Cadians: gas masks, hoods, torn cloth over the armour plates etc. These areas could be painted different colours in order to add more interest, so the green could be added here. Having said that, the battle damage looks much better on a green background.
Let me know your thoughts. Thanks for the input.

I like that new color scheme a lot, the sublte scarring is really good. The theme is also very cool, and I think if you keep it going this way the army is going to look really insidiously Chaos. I'm thinking removal of imperial symbols, more than usual weathering, and those chaos markings would make an army that would make me go
"Hey, nice guard army.....hmmm, I have a strange sensation that Chaos is present by I can't quite put my finger on it..."
and then you can summon some demons or something
Fantastic painting, keep it up

The test trooper is finished now except for his base. I think I will stick with this colour scheme after all. I have dirtied up his armour and fatigues in order to fit in with his shabby attire.
As I plan on giving him a trench base I haven't paid much attention to his boots because they will be covered with mud at this stage.
Thanks for all your comments. Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

Here is my latest trooper. As you can see, he is closely modelled on CM Dante's excellent Blood Pact models. I'm still having trouble with the chain axe head. I have tried making my own but it didn't really work out and all of the GW ones are too big. The FW ones look cool but as they are designed for World Eaters I imagine they will be too large as well. Does anyone have any suggestions? My alternative is to replace the arms with some of the FW renegade arms when my order arrives.
This guy is going to make up part of my first squad who will have a Khorne theme.

I did something similar for my renegade, but used an eviscerator instead of a chain axe. You can find a picture of him a little down this thread.

Very nice work here, the freehand is really nicely done. The colour scheme in general works well too. The only thing I would suggest is perhaps adding a spot colour somewhere.
Looking forward to more.

Agreed, your original scheme is the better of the two (both very good) options.
If you lavish this much care on each model, you will have an amazing-looking army. It may take a very long time, though...

The test fig looks great, the rust and dirt are more visible on the green armor so you may have to go a bit overboard to get them visible with the brown armor.
Looking forward for the next chapter.

Thanks for all of the encouraging comments.
Thanks for the link Eliazar, your =][= Munda gang is looking really good. I really like your warrior priest conversion. Although I like your eviscerator idea, after much trouble and a great deal of cursing I have decided to abandon the chain axe and just give him a lasgun insetead. This will be more wysiwyg for a guardsman anyway.
Slann, the heads and arms are from the Warhammer Empire flagellants. They fit onto the Cadian bodies without any trouble. The arms just need converting slightly in order to hold 40k weaponry.
CMDante, I think you are right about the colour. I don't want to change this model too much as I am happy with the way he turned out and don't want to spoil him but with the rest of the squad I am going to experiment with adding the odd red armour plate here and there as though the troopers have painted over them themselves.
Metsuri, the weathering isn't as obvious on the brown but on the next models I may lighten the armour slightly. I have also been experimenting with some of the MIG pigments. Their standard rust shows up quite well against the scorched brown armour. I am also using their dry mud on his boots.
The base is almost done. More updates soon.

Because I've been away from the hobby for a while I don't have a current rule book. The last copy of the rules that I bought was the 3rd edition!
I plan on fielding them as Imperial Guard and at the moment I'm just concentrating on getting a couple of squads together. I know roughly what IG squads consist of from earlier editions. Once I've got a few models to play with I'll invest in the rules and find a club in Lancaster to play at.
P.S. Do any of the Imperial Armour books contain rules for renegades?

nice work thusfar, though, I must say, given the thickness of that handle your khornate IG was holding, you might be able to get away with a berzerker's chainaxe without it looking too whonky.

I haven't abandoned this project, I've just been very busy with my PhD thesis. I have decided to change the direction of the project slightly and go for an urban warfare theme. Here is what I have so far:
Comments and criticisms are welcome along with any suggestions for where I might go from here with the colour scheme. I was thinking of using black and green for the other colours to give a slight Nurgle feel.

No reason you can't have elements of both in the army, I can't imagine the Imperial Guard let alone Chaos getting changed as soon as they leave or enter a city. I can also easily imagine the new urban fatigues being lost by those berks in the Adeptus Ministorum. Great stuff I like both colour schemes and your modelling and painting hits the mark for me. These Chaos Guardsman are great. I especially like the more understated nature of these compared to some others. If there capable of passing for loyalists it makes betraying the Emperor worshipping scum much easier.
