Are we going to be flooding the forums of how chess is suppose to work now?
No but there will be a huge rant on the fact that the queen is grossly OP (and how Queen-spam lists are ruining the meta), the rules for a bishop are badly worded and if taken RAW allow them to voluntarily move like a knight, and that the king is a useless unit that is severely overcosted for its abilities...
Also, the charging bonuses are deeply overpowered.

It's much worse than that. The charging unit automatically wins the combat . I've had the grossly OP queen slaughtering pawns one turn and then being run down by one pawn the next.

yeah, Deep Striking Bishops. Infiltrating pawns. Outflanking Knights. Kings with 2++ saves. Rooks with unlimited charge range. Queens with Strength D blasts.
Panic...

What happens if I want to use my Queen, do I have to roll 2d6 to charge? What if I fail my charge what happens then?
If I want to use my Knight, can I say Knight, GW lawyers will not get ansy with me? Do I need direct LoS? Do I bend over the table and use the Knights view to see if I can make my Jump assault? What if I use my jump ability in the movement phase, can I still assault?
Oh what fun we are going to have.
Oh can I have my queen summon deamons now?

Warhammer 40K: Chess - Regicide, a game that blends the Warhammer IP with the strategy and tactical gameplay of chess, is coming to multiple gaming platforms in 2014, Hammerfall Publishing and Games Workshop announced today.
Cathrin Machin, project lead at Hammerfall Publishing, told Polygon that two of the defining principles of Warhammer 40K: Chess - Regicide are compelling and tactical gameplay mechanics combined with a strong emphasis on visual fidelity. Based on this, the game mixes in stunt choreographed and motion captured animation to create "merciless kill and death animations" using military trained fight and stunt choreographers.
"The animation is a really critical aspect of the project, there are countless unique kill and attack sequences and we've worked tirelessly with motion capture stunt performers in a state of the art studio to ensure each move is realistic, and of quality," Machin told Polygon. "Thousands of hours have been dedicated to asset creation, and I feel the teams passion and effort shines through in the final product."
Featuring upgradable characters, players can choose to play from several factions from popular Warhammer 40K races. The game offers single and multiplayer classic chess modes, along with a Blood Angels story-driven campaign powered by the new Codex chess engine and written by Games Workshop published author Ross Watson.
Warhammer 40K: Chess - Regicide features cross-platform gameplay. Specialists for PC, tablet and mobile games, Hammerfall is slated to release the game on multiple platforms; however, the company was unable to confirm specific platforms at this time.
Those who sign up in the in the first 30 days of its launch will receive a free in-game Space Marine White Scar army. You can get a taste of Warhammer 40K: Chess - Regicide in the cinematic teaser trailer above, created by cinematic studio Plastic Wax.
"We have a great respect for the Warhammer 40K IP, the many loyal fans, and Games Workshop," said Tyrone Maddams, art director at Plastic Wax, in a prepared statement. "We wanted to break new ground, and chose to create the cinematic using a real-time engine. It was important that we created a cinematic which not only represented the quality of the game by using in-game assets, but also does justice to the IP."

That's... kind of arbitrary. The graphics look really lovely from the teaser (made with in-game assets apparently) and the turnarounds and models on the IGN page, but that's a really weird thing to announce. Why they couldn't put those same resources into a squad-based turn based strategy game like Squad Command or Chaos Gate is beyond me.

40K chess sounds like a good idea... if someone made a physical version of it. Seems too bland to throw it on to a gaming platform, unless it sounds like they're really going to change up gameplay and mechanics.
And what do they mean by "free White Scars army"? Is everything else a DLC?
Been too wary of these little games coming out since the horrendous trainwreck that was "Storm of Vengeance". The only game I've been looking forward to has been Eternal Crusade, and that's not going to be ready until next year.

Game looks interesting though.

Did you ever play Battlechess? That was a great game. If it were just that with a 40K coat of paint it'd be worth buying. This is apparently more than that.

Here's hoping. Battlechess was a lot of fun, to watch and play.
