Dysartes,

I showed these to Mrs. Captain Brown and she thinks they are just too cute...I think that is in relation to the small furry animal theme more than anything else.

Nice work. That Dark Dwarf really benefits from your colour choices, and the squirrel model looks very cool indeed! The armour on the Hare also looks very nice, even at this early stage of the model's completion.

Thanks for the feedback, Azazelx -

Hey, we made it to page 2!

Yeah, the Oathsworn Burrows & Badgers figures are pretty cute - yet they still have an appropriately martial bent to them. And I'll take the cute vote if it means people are looking

Mind you, I'm assuming she was referring to the Squirrel there - it could've been the Dark Dwarf Mage!

Speaking of Dark Dwarves, I've got these guys finished off now:

Had a big blitz on the armour last Friday, then spent the rest of the weekend finishing them up enough to consider them done for now. Not entirely sure about the leader's eyes (or claw, honestly), but they're good enough for now.

Let's see:

- Armour: GW Boltgun Metal, washed with Nuln Oil (helms were VMA Steel, also washed with Nuln Oil)
- Gold: GW Chainmail, washed multiple times with Seraphim Sepia until I was happy
- Purple hat/loincloth - See Dark Dwarf Mage's robes.
- Crossbows & quarrels: P3 Gun Corps Brown, washed with Agrax Earthshade
- Tentacle: VMC Royal Purple & VGC Squid Pink, with a vague attempt at a wet blend in the middle. Whole tentacle washed with Reikland Fleshshade.
- Leather: P3 Leather, washed with Agrax Earthshade
- Crossbow flights: P3 Gun Corps Brown, with a wetbrush of VMC Ivory over the top, washed down with Agrax Earthshade
- Beards: Greys were P3 Ironhull Grey, washed with Nuln Oil; Ginger was P3 Bloodstone, washed with Agrax Earthshade; Dirty blonde was P3 Rucksack Tan, washed with Seraphim Sepia.
- Crab Claw: Panzer Aces Shadow Flesh, washed with Reikland Fleshhade (overall), Agrax Earthshade (recesses) and Nuln Oil (deep recesses)
- Flesh: P3 Midlund Flesh, washed with Reikland Fleshtone. Inside of mouth washed with Baal Red.
- Brown robes: Basecoated with P3 Battlefield Brown; shaded with P3 Umbral Umber; highlighted once with a Battlefield Brown/Gun Corps Brown mix.
- Tufts: Army Painter Mountain Tuft

What's up next, I hear you ask? Well, I undercoated and started on the bases of my Mason's Guild for Guild Ball (everyone except Veteran Harmony (on pre-order) and alt-Flint, who I forgot to do). I also picked up Burning of Prospero last week, and should be getting Calth tomorrow - I haven't decided on a legion yet (though I'm leaning towards the Smurfs), so I'm starting off with Ahriman and Wolfy McWolfWolf, along with a plastic IG Commissar from a Militarum Tempestus Getting Started box - now up to 20 Scions, though with no real idea on how I'll build them.

Well, Captain, if she likes the Squirrel she's in luck...

New WIP shot:

He's nearly there.

Eyes & claws - P3 Coal Black
Belt - P3 Bootstrap Leather
Core robe - VMA Gunship Green
Robe edge/sleeves/hood - VMC Flat Green
Leather bracelet (upper wrist) - P3 Cryx Bane Base, hghlighted with a Cryx Bane Base/Cryx Highlight mix, washed twice with Nuln Oil.

Some small detail work to go, such as the studs on his wrist, belt buckle and the toggle under his chin. I also need to finish his eyes, and decide what else to do with the robe - I'm thinking a wash of some sort, plus a spot of highlighting, then I just need to tuft his base up.

I'll try and get some WIPs of the other Oathsworn stuff I'm working on later - it now includes one really big badger...

Thanks, Wirecat - I think some of the problem is the angle of the picture, which I've tried to remedy below.

Nearly a week since I last posted? I should probably remedy that. I've been making progress on a bunch of things at the same time recently, but not necessarily in huge steps. Even so, small steps on a number of figures is still progress.

I'm going to kick off with the least exciting of the things I've been working on - a ball marker for Guild Ball. As with the rest of the team, work has been delayed while I've been working up the enthusiasm to drybrush the bases, which I finally managed to do last night.

The ball needs a wash of Agrax Earthshade, the visible stitches picking out, and the rim tidying up at a bare minimum, before adding some tufts to the base - I don't think I'll be using the same ones I have been doing, but it'll be Friday at the earliest before I can pick the new set up.

Moving on to another figure that hasn't had much technique applied to yet, here's everyone's favourite hairball, Chewbacca. A plastic figure for Imperial Assault, so far he has been undercoated and had a couple of layers of P3 Umbral Umber added for a deep brown basecoat. Next layer is going to be Battlefield Brown, then Bloodstone, and I'll then take a view - though I need to get some picture references for any patterns in his fur.

Moving on to our third range in three images, this is Maverick Mike, a mercenary from Tor Gaming's Relics range. There isn't a studio scheme for this figure yet, so I'm thinking something along the lines of the French army from the Napoleonic Wars, possibly - either way, a blue coat and bicorne, probably with yellow epaulettes & crest.

Back to Oathsworn, and starting with one I've not posted here before - the Badger Mercenary. It is a bit of a beefy figure...

The club was painted the same way as the Pug's one earlier in the thread, though still needs it's wash of Agrax Earthshade. The cloak has had one coat of VMA Gunship Green, though probably needs a second one for a thorough coat. The armour is VMA Gun Metallic, washed with Nuln Oil, which gives quite a dark silver metal.

Next up we have the Pug - not a huge amount on him since the last picture. I've picked out the metal details on the stap across his chest with Boltgun Metal, along with the studs on his armour, then carefully applied Nuln Oil to both. Next up for him is doing some research into what Pugs look like, to get an idea on how to paint his fur - I guess there are worse ways to spend a Sunday.

Not much progress on the Squirrel - the metal details on his belt and bracer have been picked out, though still need a wash. I need to commit to what I'm going to do to shade/highlight his robe, then I can get on to final details...

Last, but by no means least, I give you Hermann's Tortoise - as who doesn't like a tortoise in Roman legionnaire armour?

You can be a part of #TeamSquirrel, Captain, I'll stick with being #TeamHermann.

Speaking of which, some progress!

- Washed the ball marker, Badger's club & the stocks on Mike's weapons with Agrax Earthshade
- Touched up the based edges on a whole bunch of stuff, including the Oathsworn models, my Guild Ball team and Maverick Mike.
- Added another coat of Royal Purple to Hermann's cloak
- Basecoated all the armour on the Guild Ball team with VMA Steel
- Pin-washed seam lines on the Ball token with Nuln Oil
- Picked out the three stitches with VMC Ivory
- Washed Hermann's skin with Agrax Earthshade, trying to darken the recesses
- Basecoated HISS 1's female Dwarf's skin with Midlund Flesh, and hair with Bloodstone.
- Basecoated HISS Dwarf's bedroll with P3 Thornwood Green, then all the pouches, straps, etc with P3 Bootstrap Leather. Weapon heads & chainmail got a basecoat with VMA Gunmetal Grey, washed with Nuln Oil.
- Basecoated skin on all Caucasian members of the Mason's Guild team with Midlund Flesh

And some pictures for evidence:

Ball marker - Guild Ball
All the painting is done, just need to add the tufts. Picking them up tomorrow night, so should be finished on Sunday.

Dwarf Fighter - Oathsworn Miniatures
I think I highlight the face/hands with a Midlund/Elf Flesh mix, then wash with Reikland Fleshshade and take it from there. Hair will get the same treatment as the Squirrel fur. Leather needs an Agrax wash (once I add one strap on the bedroll). Need to figure out main colour palette yet - and remember to get a shot of the back of the figure next time.

Hermann's Tortoise - Oathsworn Miniatures
I suspect a targeted wash in some areas with an Agrax/Nuln mix may be in order, as Agrax alone didn't fetch out as much scale detail as I wanted. Also need to block out the eyes, then start the washing on the clock for some depth & detail. Also need to basecoat the shell with Umbral Umber as a prelude to trying to do tortoiseshell...

Mason's Guild - Guild Ball
The gang's almost all here - need to reattach Mallet's arms after dropping him at an awkward angle. Second coat of flesh is the next priority, as well as starting to think about hair colours. Need to do a blue/black wash on the steel once I've tidied it up post-flesh. After that? Probably start with the blue cloth, then the black leather, then the darker metal for tools/weapons.

As an aside - anyone got a reliable recipe for an African (or African-American) flesh tone? Hammer would look odd if made Caucasian.

Hmm... may I suggest taking a single photo of a not particularly shiny miniature, like that tortoise, on a matte black (or nearly black) background?

Squirrel is looking nicer, as is WIP on the pug!

My recipe for a dark skin is anything but reliable. When going for something I can reproduce, I fall back to light flesh as a base, layered with a mixture of flesh and "Umbral Umber" from Privater, getting increasingly darker and more watered with each layer. When I feel more adventurous I basecoat with burnt umber and then repeatedly wash with violet stuff I no longer remember where I've got from. Just an ink in a bottle similar to what Acrylicos Vallejo come in, with deep violet tone. Sorry, no easy to show example for that. :(

Dysartes,

Everything seems to be progressing.

I have always used the method of starting with Dwarf Flesh as my base mixture, added a brown shade to the mix (the brown shade selected depends on the pigment I want to achieve), as I lighten with highlights I add the smallest amount of white to my mixture.

Hope that helps,

CB

Cool WIP stuff here. As far as African and African-American fleshtones, skin it really depends since there's so much variation in tone and shade - especially in African Americans due to the high proportion of mixed African/Caucasian parentage mixed in, but also in African people from Africa - Somali skin is often much darker then Eritrean skin, and those nations are essentially right next to one another.

My advice is to pick a dark brown that matches the tone you want, and then highlight with another shade that you like, or mix in a little bit of whichever "white" flesh tone you prefer.

@Wirecat - Outside of t-shirts, I'm not sure I've got anything suitable around the flat for a matte black background. Can I ask why you think I need to take such a picture?

@Captain Brown - Thanks for that. I suspect Dwarf Flesh would translate somewhere between Midlund and Khardic Flesh from the P3 line. A mix of one of those and Battlefield Brown could make for an interesting test - where's that box of misc. Mantic figures for a guinea pig?

@Azazelx - Finding advice on African skin tones has always seemed harder than for Caucasion tones, which is a litle odd.

I freely acknowledge that it is/was a mess, Eggroll. And the carpet means I'd rather not drop a bit at the best of times!

Azazelx, I feel your pain

+++++

Here was my plan at the start:
* Use the small square table to store paints and tools on
* The tray on the floor is for partial asemblies, or assembled & based figures that need an undercoat
* Clear as much stuff off or away from from the table top, leaving the light & photo backdrop, water pots and current projects on there

In light of that, what miniatures did I find were lurking on one or the other of the surfaces?

Not yet started
* Human & Orc BB teams from the new box (on a placemat, so easy to move)
* Blood Bowl Mighty Zug (metal, hands-on-hips pose)
* Space Wolf Venerable Dreadnough (in box)
* Cygnar Rangers (in box)
* Relics C'thu blisters (C'tharac, Infant C'tharacs, Prime, Vesparmoth)
* Relics Mercenary blister (Ltd Ed Chronicler, Maverick Boys)
* Frostgrave Gnoll Tracker & War Hyena
* Otherworld Miniatures (Cockatrice, Lich)
* Macrocosm Digger Corps and Malignancy starters
* Guild Ball (Ltd Ed Flint, Union Starter, Veteran Harmony)
* Imperial Assault expansion (Dengar)
* GW Plastics (Deathwatch Watch Master, Wolf Lord Krom, Grombrindal, Captain Artemis
* GW M2O Kasrkin Assault Weapons
* Forge World Ultramarines Legion Herald
* Rewards from multiple Infamy Miniatures Kickstarters
* Anvil Industries mail order with a selection of figures
* Oathsworn Miniatures order
* EMP Games Guardian Warden
* Reaper Bones figures from Free RPG Day, plus Skeleton on Throne
* DC Universe Trinity
* Bolt Action v2.0 pre-order model

WIP
* Relics C'thu (Infant C'tharac, C'thunian Warriors, Teeth of Thamos)
* Leven Miniatures Castle Fort
* GW M2O Tech-Priest Enginseer, Necromunda Telekinetic
* GW Plastics (BoP characters, Commissar)
* Assembled Otherworld Miniatures (2 Dwarfs and a Halfling)
* Warlord Games Savage Core Herr Klee
* Heresy Miniatures Goblin Shaman
* Mantic Warpath Corporation Major General
* 4 Farrow Brigands from Iron Kingdoms: Unleashed
* Black Scorpion Dwarf Lord & not-Blood Bowl Ogre
* Queen Victoria with Gatling Gun
* Lead Adventure Dwarf Lord with Tankard
* Guild Ball - Mason's team, plus ball token

I'm now a little confused as to a, where it all came from; and b, how it managed to all be there on the table... still, everything is now either in a box, or on the WIP tray on the floor, as seen below:

Painting night at the LGS tomorrow, then I might get some more done over the weekend now the table (and surrounds) are in a better shape...

I'm not doing too well at the regular posting in here, am I?

Still, here are my January completions:

Guild Ball

Guild Ball ball token - needed tidying up + tufting

Oathsworn Miniatures

Pug Bounty Hunter

Squirrel Rogue

Female Dwarf Fighter

Hermann's Tortoise

Nice feeling to get some models off the docket, and I've made progress on others than I need to take pictures of. I think the next thing is a little assembly and basing, though - I'd like to make a start on a few of the C'thu, as well as the Nazi Treasure Hunter and maybe a couple of the HH figures I have.

Another week or two, another update.

So, what have I been working on since the last update? Firstly, I've made a couple of review posts on my blog outside of Dakka - my rewards from the Ghosts of Gaia Kickstarter from Bad Squiddo Games, and then two new units from Tor Gaming for the Relics game, which I got a little before normal release.

In terms of painting, I've been working on a new batch of figures. Three are from Oathsworn, a couple are from Tor Gaming, one from the Warlord Games Savage Core line and one is from Bad Squiddo. I've also continued working on some of the stuff from the previous batch I had,

Enough talking about it, time for some pictures:

Oathsworn Miniatures

Female Rogue & two children (all from HISS 2)

Tor Gaming

C'thu Prime, Teeth of Thamos

Maverick Mike (started as part of an earlier batch)

Bad Squiddo Games

Eve the Sniper

Savage Core

Nazi Treasure Hunter

I'm not really getting the hang of this "plog"ing thing, am I?

On the other hand, I did recently finish some C'thu for the Relics game from Tor Gaming:

Group shot

C'tharac - a command unit for the C'thu

A group of Infant C'tharac

I think these are the first Relics models I've actually finished painting - somewhere between 32 and 74 points, depending on how many of the Infants I keep back to be summoned into play. I probably should've taken a little more care cleaning up around the horns on the Infants, but other than that, I'm fairly happy with them. Eighteen eyes on each Infant was a bit of a drag, though, I tell you!

I tried using two of the Citadel Gem Technical paints on these, and I'm happier with them than I was with the Sniper further up the thread - on the other hand, the shapes here are more like the ones you're expected to use them on.

In addition to painting these five, I've made further progress on a bunch of other stuff, but I'll update that after Friday's hobby night at my LGS.

Finally, I've added two new posts on my blog, which you may be interested in:
- Oathsworn Miniatures: Burrows & Badgers - Figures (where I finally write the review for some figures I bought at UK Games Expo last year)
- Tor Gaming - Death from Above (where I take a look at the Tor Gaming C'thu Vesparther, which came out during the Easter weekend)

I'm aware that my last six posts over there are review posts (including looking at Kickstarter rewards), and that I've got at least another two planned in the next month (KS rewards from the Boxing Day Oathsworn campaign, and Dark Souls) - is this something I should be worried about, or am I just overthinking things?

Thanks CK - I've got a C'thu Prime and a Teeth of Thamos which are at varying degrees of WIP at the moment, and which I should probably make some progress with. That gives me another commander option, as well as a reasonably big hitter.

I was originally planning on doing a WIP update today, following the hobby evening at my NSLBFGS - however, I ended up mostly helping them move stuff from one shop to another (or to the office), alongside doing a spot of assembly, so I may do some painting tomorrow instead, and update after that.

Ah, the classic pitfall of helping out the FLGS - or NSLBFGS in your case. I always find myself walking home with stuff I didn't really need afterwards

Unfortunately I wasn't able to leave with the partly-ready order I had waiting for me because they were trying to get straightened out for today - no Samurai or BB Troll for me this week :(

On the other hand, I now want to pick up the plastic Malifaux Teddy model *facepalm*

Apparently I'm leaning towards monthly updates now - hmm.

Anyway, I come bearing completed models!

This stone circle was part of the rewards for backing the 24 hour Kickstarter that Oathsworn Miniatures ran on Boxing Day, to expand their Burrows and Badgers line. Having received my stuff in April, I undercoated these stones last week alongside one of the below WIPs, and have managed to knock them out fairly quickly. I may come back and add some static grass tufts to a couple of them, but I'm happy to call them done for now.

From a different campaign by Oathsworn, I've also been working on this loot marker:

The shield will probably end up blue, and I need to do some more work on the gold, but not bad progress for a night or two.

The piece I mentioned undercoating last week alongside the stone circle was this "Mob Football" goal post by Primogenesis - another Kickstarter from last year:

Need to paint the base texture for inside and outside the wall, and probably "white-wash" the Mason Guild symbol on the outside of the wall to make it a bit more prominent. It only stands out as much as it does on the second picture due to the angle of the shadow.

Of course, having a goal marker painted means I'll need to pull my finger out and actually get a squad painted at some point...

Let's all meet up in the post three thousand,
Won't it be strange when we're all painted up...

Well, that's a milestone hit, even if I'm still miles off some of the post levels of certain members on here....

And unlike them, I'm not good at the whole celebrating thing, so I'll shout "Huzzah!" and move on.

First things first, two more things move into the completed pile. And, for once, they're both things I showed as WIP last time out - the goal marker and loot token. Unleash the photo-monkey!

First up, the finished goal marker from Primogenesis - yes, I know the white glue is showing from under one of the tufts.

And this is the finished loot counter from one of the Oathsworn Kickstarters. Quite happy with how it has turned out, and the blue shield works quite well as a contrast.

In terms of WIP stuff, let's have a quick look through:

Here's the stone dias that came as part of the Boxing Day Kickstarter from Oathsworn - painted grey, washed with Agrax Earthshade, and then drybrushed back up with a couple of layers. I think I need to go back and paint over the black in the gaps between stones with a dark brown, but other than that, unless I go up another layer, it is pretty much done.

The large black circle in the dias has three interchangeable pieces to fit in it. The one at the front is going to be the one I'll be finishing first, as I'll be working up the arcane glow next. I'm not sure what I want to do the pool of liquid as, and I'm tempted to try to do the large block on the other with some form of marble effect.

The children are coming along - I think I need to do a second coat on the blue cloak, before moving to highlight and shade, and I've noticed a chip on the wooden sword, which I'll need to fix before it is finished. Also need to work up some contrasing patches on the two cloaks.

Eve is almost there - I've basecoated the armour plates and her uniform, so need to work those up, and do some straps and buckles.

Finally, a couple of Blood Bowl models - the Halfling Referee, and the old metal Grim Ironjaw Star player. I need to paint the flesh on the Halfling's feet with a second layer, before he gets a wash. Grim's flesh has been washed, but his hair needs a second basecoat before highlighting begins.

I also recently picked up the C-3PO and R2-D2 pack for Imperial Assault, and figure that C-3PO should make for a fairly quick paint job, so I'm going to try to get him ready to paint on Friday.

Those C'tharac would look great in a game of Arkham Horror.

The rest of the models are coming along nicely.

Cheers,

Thanks Captain.

I got the dias centrepiece I was working on to a point I'm reasonably happy with, and managed to get a picture of the set in place on my LGS on Friday, which was cool. Might still want to push the glow further near intersections,

Finished basecoating the Halfing Ref, and got a first coat on the skin of the Goblin Ref. Went through and picked out the bling on Grim Ironjaw - sheesh, there's a lot of jewellery on that guy. Have also highlighted and washed his hair, so now beed to build it up to a brighter orange (and decided what colour to do his trousers) before finishing the bling off.

These models are from a line from Star Player Miniatures, for Dwarf coaching staff. The gal on the left is a Bloodweiser Babe, while the other guy is a Dwarf Head Coach, who comes with the notice board. I need to bring the parchment on the board up, then drop on some form of tactics diagram, which should be cool. Early days on the skin on the other two, of course.

Here's C-3PO from Imperial Assault. I need to go back and even up a couple of spots of his gold, do his eyes, and pick out some of the wires at his waist, but I'm happy with how he is coming along. Should get him finished this week, all things being equal.

I have just finished assembling and basing another pair of characters, so maybe they'll make an appearance in the next update...

The dais centrepiece looks perfect for a climactic scene in a D&D campaign.
