Never paint yellow on black basecoating. I had to redo all parts I wanted to coat yellow with slightly pink dipped grey before --still having to make 4-5 layers of-- yellow painting it. eeeeeyyghghh1!!! *jumps into wall*

Now I still need to figure out how to make a proper tape-cut stencil to make a checkered pattern on it (after protective coating the parts ofcourse) because last time I did that with just a brush and the steadiness of a cat at a percussion competition I wasn't satisfied with the result.

Base coating the areas with brown helps a lot if you are going for warm yellow. A lot easier to paint on top of than black.
That's what I do if I have primed the model black.

One way to do checkers is to carefully draw straight vertical and horizontal lines to form the basis of a grid.
You can use a ruler or maybe a piece of cardboard and a thin pencil (at least I found the pencil to be a lot easier than a brush for this).
After you have drawn the grid, color in the squares you want (usually every other) and call it a day!

It of course sounds a lot easier than it actually is, but that's a handy way to "cheat" the grid

I thought I'd cover both bases by painting a really old rogue trader miniature that appeared in the 40K 1st edition rulebook, and what I believe is the newest rogue trader miniature, from Combat Arena:

Work in progress:

I decided to paint the rider separately, after I accidentally knocked the painting handle over and the rider popped off - hadn't glued the waist very thoroughly anyway, I'd done a bit of a hack 'n' slash job removing the original Outrider torso from the hips, turns out there wasn't much of the chaos rider in contact with it besides the very edge of the belt on one side. I'm choosing to see this as divine assistance. The shoulder art's a colourised take on the cover of White Dwarf #5, I thought Slaanesh would appreciate the reminder of the days when GW put naked women on the front cover.

More greenskins for me this month, this time it's a selection of orcs from over the years. Definitely more on the side of the old part of the theme, though a couple of the plastics will be re-released soon so kind of new as well

I'm going to jump in with some newness. Going to paint up a Lord of Plagues, it will be my first ever Nurgle model I paint, so that's new. Also going to try some of the technical paints, which although quite old now are new to me and my painting.

I might reposition the model so I can use the three skulls on the base to make a mark of nurgle kind of thing.

Ooo, I got one of those too still on the assembled but unpainted pile.
I never really thought it was such a stand-out mini considering its strength when compared with other blight kings but I'm sure you'll make it pop.

WIP post - I tried something new this month and tried to clean up & modify my miniatures.
This may seem simple to a lot of the kitbashers, but I've never been in the warhammer community and have a bad habbit of just painting miniatures out of the box or right off the buildplate when the supports are removed.
So this month I spent some time filing down the support lines and modifying one of the elves to a more masculine frame. I'm hoping to see a cleaner product in the end but am not entirly convinced yet it was worth the effort

Chaos Outrider done:

As I mentioned earlier the shoulder pad is from White Dwarf #5. For the bike's screen I considered what vital information a Slaaneshi legionary would need to see mid-battle, and since I'd already used the pornhub logo on Doomrider's bike, I went with Baywatch.

The first royal handmaiden is finished:

Technically completed the day before yesterday, but I didn't have time to take pictures until now.

The second one is well on her way and I've just put the first bit of paint on Padme. Currently it looks like I'm on track to finish all models before the end of the month. I hope real life doesn't interfere.

So, this is a finished model picture but also only WIP for the overall entry. When I'm done or run out of time I'll take pictures of the entire group and post that as my actual entry.

Daia, JoshinJapan and Geifer… nice work there!

I’ve managed to complete 10 Crypt Guard already, will pick the best for the final entry later in the month. I am going to build the Varghulf Courtier and post a proof pic of that too (if that is ok with Nevelon)

Might try and get him entered if I can paint him up in time alongside 4 of the Crypt Guard I’ve finished…

Here’s a pic of all ten. I’m messing around with how I take the photos… giving them a base of slate to sit on before removing the background. What do you think?

I'm in. For this month, I'm going to paint up one or more of the Gnot Tanks I designed and had 3D printed. They're very "In with the new" because I designed them so no one has ever seen these particular tanks before and because these are the first 3D prints I've ever painted. Going to start with this one:

Blackout at home due to weather eliminated distractions and gave good opportunity to focus on the painting.
Painting done, and eventually want to put this guy in a small diorama with this clear floral cover I got at a dollar-store.
Also, I dont have a good camera, but my friend does, asked him to take some pictures, will upload those later.
Curious to see what his Sony A7 III will do.

It is worth the effort, even if it is not looking like you imagined it would, yet the effort and practice is a learning process through witch the brain is building those specific pathways that will be evident in the next project!
Good on the efforts! and I like your nail palette lolz, I do the same At some point we need to do a community vote contest of thumb-nail palettes.

Killer fades on the handmaidens. Cool Undead and an adorable tank, too. And that's just the last few posts! Shaping up to be another good month.

Raziel base coated with Ultramarine Blue spray. Army Painter, not GW. And not much else. Worked on the blade a bit. Not going well. Need to take a different approach.

Finished pictures are in!; thanks to my friend for those. Wish some images where reshot with better focus, but I'z has what I'z has.
I do want to try the nmm on a smoother newer model, and with an airbrush next time, just to prove to my self that I can do it, and prob never waste time on it again. I do see Lots of room for improvement.

Mostly, on my phone.

So... I got distracted by the free stl from Korhyl miniatures Serenissima II campaign:

I like the idea of dockside hawkers selling food to folk off the boats.

Originally I'd intended to use a gs roller to make cobbles but felt that they'd look too small against my other Carnveale terrain so came up with the idea of using mdf offcuts. I knew it was a good idea to keep all those bits from the inside of windows and tabs!
I mean I [i]may[/] still do MCP stuff but this whole fdm printing thing is totally new to me - plus the recycling of old stuff - so definitely fits the theme

No skipping leg day for me. I'm finally making decent progress on the Real Grade Z'Gok.

If worst comes to worst and I can't finish the mobile suit by the contest deadline, it does come with a 1/144 scale pilot figure that I will paint up.

So much cool stuff going on!

Nearly half way through the month and I've only just started on my entry. I was hoping to do some more forest exodites, this time dragon knights, but the kitbash/conversion just isn't coming together. My fall back was Raven Guard with glacier bases, but I've not been able to work up the enthusiasm for all that black, so instead I'm doing different exodites. They're exodite militia from the plains clans (proof below), and I'm using rogue trader eldar guardians as the base with 3D printed lasblasters. Hope that's enough old and new to fit the theme...

I'm intending to do the main armour dark blue (Kantor blue) and have desaturated bone coloured kneepads and helmets, with probably dark green loin cloths and the coat/cloak on the guy on the far right. The lasblasters will be predominantly black. The scheme is basically supposed to tie in with the exodite dragon lord I painted up for a previous entry. I have a bit of an issue, though, the old rogue trader guardians have chainmail looking undersuits and I'm not sure what colour to paint them. I'm not sure metallic really fits the lore, or the scheme, but I'm not sure what colour to paint them otherwise? Maybe a dark metallic would work, like a black-silver?

Anyone have any suggestions for what they think would look good?

Dark-desaturated-leather-brown-ish should work. To tie it in.

I'm actually going to switch my entry to one that might be more appropriate to the theme. I recently got my hands on the new Belial model for my Dark Angels, and I already had the old one unpainted, so I thought I might paint them side by side. Proof pic:

The old model is a perfect example of why people refer to Finecast as Failcrap. Despite trying the hot water trick more than once when I first got the model, I never could get old Belial's sword straight. So glad we have a plastic one now so I don't have to deal with that. Unfortunately I'll probably lose a lot of votes to the bent sword on the old model now that I'm painting it, but it is what it is. I never threaten the podium in these things anyway, so what have I got to lose, right?

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

Cool concept, to paint two different miniatures representing the same character! Great interpretation of the theme.
