Hey Dakka,

I am starting this blog on Dakka to try to record my progress on the Modelling-Mayhem force and get more feedback and idea's. So your welcome to hit subscribe at the bottom of this page!

Anyways enough rambling on and welcome to my Blog for the poor Footslogger. I hope you enjoy following it over the next few... Ermmm... Decades by the time I finish this army :-S

'Bring forth the Chimera, and know no fear!'

So here it is, the start of the Modelling-Mayhem Imperial Guard army. Feel free to add your comments and input as well as add what you would like to see me add to the army next.

Anyway time to get on with the modelling! In pic 1 you will see a Chimera Transport, the only work done on this for purpose of this pic is just clipping, cleaning and assembling.

Next up will be more progress on the Chimera Transport. In pic 2 the Chimera has had the Lascannon replaced with an Autocannon to give it more of a tank look! It's had a bit of Greenstuff popped on for good measure into the cracks to fill these awful things!

I have now drilled out the Heavy Bolter and the actual Autocannon turret - see pic 3 - to make it that little bit more realistic. I have made the turret still be able to swivel as well as adding the hatch to the turret and also making it so this could swivel too, courtesy of some spare sprue. The Pic Below is a close up of the Autocannon pre-drilled.

Pic 4 is a photo of the turret and stubber, as well as the bolter after it has all been drilled. Sorry for the not so clear pictures, the girlfriend dropped her camera whilst on a night out so it is currently getting fixed. When it's fixed I will upload better images for all to see.

Pic 5 is the stubber drilled out and the support rail drilled too.

Now all thats left to do is customise it up a bit and add some personal touches before giving it a lick of paint

Enough for today though so stay tuned to this frequency...

Looks like a good start. I particularly like the split Guard insignia across the front of the 2 trackguards.

One niggle for me though is that the vent holes to the stubber should not go all the way through. They are designed to allow air in to cool the barrel shroud beneath, not to allow the propellant escape before the bullet leaves the barrel

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Flinty thanks for the feedback and yes your right, the stubber vent holes were drilled through that little to far :S and I shall have to fix this with the old Greenstuff!

The split guard insignia is great and it looks even better now it is painted up to.

Progress update.

So I got some paint down on the Chimera Transport and will be adding a few custom bits to give it a much more pleasant look as it rolls along the battlefield! Games Workshop left this fantastic vehicle far to plain and simple, so I am going to change that.

Pic 1 is of the Chimera after being primered with Adeptus Battlegrey followed by a basecoat of Vallejo Game Color Cayman Green. Again sorry for the pic quality I am still using the camera on my phone as the digital camera is still being repaired.

Then next up I gave the edges a very fine hard edge highlight which can be seen in pic 2 using a mix of 5 parts Cayman Green and 3 parts Skull White. I applied this hard edge highlight using the side part of a brush. I also - as you can probably make out - have painted the imperial wings and skull using Adeptus Battlegrey as a basecoat followed by several thin layers of Skull White leaving the darker shade in the recesses.

I haven't painted any of the main details yet like weapons and lenses. I will get to this at a later stage. So enough for now. Next up Day 3...

So progress update... I have now got all the hard edge highlighting completed minus a few tidy ups, I have also got the turret painted up - again minus the weapons which will be painted at a later stage. Picture below of this progress.

This is slightly clearer than previous pics so I hope it's good enough for you to look at.

Now progress still ahead, I will be painting the Imperial Aquilla on the turret as well as lenses and neccessary battle damage in the next stage, as well as applying a wash of Vallejo Sepia to the recesses, then tidying any rough bits up. The next stage then will be to add custom bits as well as maybe a bit of Greenstuff.

I'm also thinking about trimming off the lascannons on the rear sides and replacing them with trimmed down versions of the Las Rifles the Guard are issued with! Any thoughts?

Thats it for now though check out updates in Day 4...

Progress Report...

So yesterday I managed to get a slight bit of work done on the Chimera, the lenses are now painted (but not glossed). I painted the heavy bolter and I made the Cadia gates badge out of greenstuff!! Not that great a try either im afraid! I got a few other things completed on the Chimera too, like badges painted up and the weapons are all now nearly finished being painted, once this is complete I should then - by the end of today - have the tracks painted and weathered too!

Pic is a front shot of the Chimera to display lenses and badges... Again I am still waiting for the camera to be returned so I am still using the phone im afraid!

Anyways more work to follow soon...

1x Valkyrie

2x 'Counts as' Sentinel vehicles to make up in 40k - because GW Senti's look to much Star Warsy for my liking, not that I dislike Star Wars of course. These are very cool - pics soon

1x ATV 'Counts as' Rough Riders - again I really dislike GW's Horseback hun!! this was made out of 2 Space Marine Scout Bikes.

1x Command Squad

1x Platoon Command Squad

4x Platoon Squads

AND! A dozen more other things to keep me busy for a while with the short model time I have available!!

Regards

MM

Neat! Do you plan on adding Battle Damage, or keeping them Factory Fresh? I find Battle Damage makes them more intimidating, but Factory Fresh is, well, Fresh, and that's reassuring to see on the Table as well. It's a 'Grunts versus Glory Boys' Argument.

Loving the ATV! Fantastic concept for a Counts-As. What did it involve? It looks like a Conversion to me, as opposed to a Stand-In Mini?

Popsicle - I really do intend on adding battle damage as I like the look of surviving onslaught after onslaught and dont like fresh crispy looking tanks lol.

That said we do have massive plans for this blog but it's getting round to getting them completed. But battle damage will be added at a later date sir. Maybe after their first battle.

Also finally things have quietened down at home with people moving out etc so alot more painting time for me! Providing the better half is not around

Regards

Tim

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Popsicle - The ATV is indeed a conversion. It comprises of a kit bash and some chopping of sorts on 2 Space Marine Scout Bikes with some spare sprue length thrown in for good measure as axles and support struts.

Munch Munch - Thanks for your comment, the Guardsmen do indeed have different helmets - with gasmask.

We purchased them from the guys over at pigiron productions. These are simply the best gas mask heads I have had the pleasure of painting.

So in the pic below we have a better pic of the Cadia gates badge on the Chimera. The greenstuffed skull was W**K! So I have now replaced this with a skull trimmed off of the Sentinel Missile Launcher.

Also shown here is the 'counts as' Senti with Missile Launcher.

P.S. Also does anyone know how to place multiple pics in 1 post seperated by text? As it keeps listing the pics at the end of my rantings! I dont want to keep creating seperate posts for them!

Where did you get the models that you are counting as sentinels? If I were going to field these (and I might, that is why am asking where you got them.) I would play them as tauros assault vehicles.

MeatShield - The Tauros assault vehicles are stunning models and at some point I would dearly love to paint one . As for the 'counts as' Senti's you can find these models dirt cheap from a guy called Jez at Old Crow Models - or http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/

Hope that helps

Scrazza - I was trying to go for the U.N style look for this force! Bad choice? Or shall I change the helmet colour? lol.

Who thinks colour change for helmets? Anyone! Everyone! No-one!...

Just Scrazza then yes?

Cheers for your comments and input Scrazza

I kind of agree with scrazza about those helmets.

UN troops have light blue helmets becuse so they can be reconized as peacekeapers. That way insurgents can see they are no threat to them and they are there to protect and help civilians and prevent crisis.

I don't know if there could be such a organisation in 40k world. Have you tought about it? I mean if you have a plan to make "UN" or somekind of "National Guard" based army you could think about the backround and tell us more about it. That could justify the light blue helmets.

But if you just planned to make just normal Imperial guard army who just kicks some bad guys ass and happens to have light blue helmets then I think you should maybe change the colour. Light blue colour would make them very visible to a enemy. It would be like "Shoot here sign" for the enemy.

But again on the other hand there are many IG regiments that are wearing strange coloured pieces of armour and uniform. And you could also connect the light blue colour to navy or air force etc. for example?

But tell us what you are after and maybe we could give you some ideas.

Agreed with Xenon, if you want them as a PeaceKeeping (PK) army, ready to quell some mutant rebellion, then light blue's fine!!!

Maybe if they're conscripts ?!? To make them stand out as target practice? lol...

No seriously, if think they're good, but definitely shout "PK operations ongoing", which may cause fluff issues to some guys around here... That's your call!

As far as National Guard armies in 40k go, they already exist - just they go by the term 'Planetary Defence Force' - or PDF for short. The role of the PDF is solely to sit back and get drunk and play childish games whilst waiting for sometimes decades or even a lifetime - or maybe never - to fire a las round.

And as for the role of a peace keeping force in 40k - I do agree it is an impossible role in both fluff and on the table. That said I was never trying to adopt a PK force or use them in this role . I just kinda liked the idea of a U.N style looking army . After all we have had countless American forces rip offs and coast guard armies and what ever else ones imagination can warrant! However I for one have never on Dakka came across a UN styled force - if there is sorry for my ignorance .

Thanks for the input though guys I do appreciate it

If you like the idea then go for it. The most of all you need to be happy about your models. If you are going with U.N. looking army have tought about painting your tanks white like UN troops?`

I think the UN idea is a nice one.But maybe put less of it? And maybe on the shoulder pad. Rebellions in the 40k universe last years, and you don't want to walk around with a bright blue symbol that says your against the rebellion.
