I just finished him this afternoon, first mini I spent a good amount of time on. Any ideas for a good base? Opinions He's the first of the Raven Guard army I plan on starting

i'd personally lighten up the face (unless the fluff says he's dark skinned). you need a bit more contrast in the colors from in front of the model.

The fluff says hes supposed to be rather pale but I was going for a mud and grime look on him over all. no time to wipe of your face when your fighting orks. What did you mean by contrast?

Here are a couple of more angles I couldn't get before.

people tend to be naturally drawn in to looking at faces even as infants (they've tracked babies eyes when new people come around them or pictures are shown and they spend long amounts of times looking at the face). you've put alot of effort into the mini but it only shows when you zoom in on the fig since the colors are all similar around the head... they're all dark. by contrast i mean tone down the muddy look on the face and put back a lighter flesh tone than you currently have. either way, good job.

I agree with Warboss, but I'd personally also add more highlighting on the armour to make the edges stand out more

Good job though

I would also sugest some additional work on the hammer head. It looks very new in comparison with the grime that you are shooting for. Also, if your going for mud and muck, his feet look awfully clean.

I'll definitely add some mud and gunk onto the feet and ankles when I start doing the base and add a layer of wash to the hammer. I'll try to re-highlight the edges of the armor I think some of the subtle highlights i used got lost with the washes. my first model with black armor so I'm still experimenting.

By the fluff, Raven Guard get very pale and their eyes go all black the older they get.

There's some sort of pigmentation defect in their gene seed.

I imagine a Captain would be well on his way to this condition...

Still, your model, your paint scheme, right?

Yeah, that was my original idea but I couldn't seem to get the skin tone correct. He just seemed to look gray. So i went ahead and assembled him and try again on the face later. As for the eyes my hands shake too much to pain his eyes especially during the 4th of July with all the fireworks going off. any ideas on how to get a good skin tone?

To get a more Raven Guard appropriate skin tone, just use lighter colors. Bleached bone and white, maybe a light purple wash in between.

That's are really great figure, very dynamic. Good paint job though I agree with the comments made thus far on the skin tone and the hammer head. Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing your updated pics.

Where did that jump pack come from? My son has a Doom Eagles SM army and it would fit very nicely with his assault characters.

Good advice; i paint my SoB with very pale skin. a 50/50 wash of sepia and purple is a great shading mix, just don't be too heavy handed with it

slightly OT, but does the model come with a helmet option?

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

Nope. No helmet option.

However, his left foot does have a patch of earth modeled on that's used as the anchoring point.

here's a tip for Raven Guard faces I found when painting mine, use fortress grey as your base for the face then wash with ogryn flesh this leaves it with a pale skin and you can add more washes or highlight as you see fit from there, but this way you get a pretty accurate Raven Guard skin tone and would suit your style of painting too, also... nice model :-)

I definitely agree about the skin. Everything else looks great, though!
