So the North American Golden Demon (man it feels wierd to say that) has come and gone, and there were really some great models there this year. I had never been to Baltimore before, and I think this was the best Games Day setup I've seen so far. Previously, when I went to Atlanta and Chicago, the entire event was down in one massive, open convention hall, with Golden Demon in a roped off area to the side. In Baltimore, Golden Demon has it's own room up on the third floor which was much better, in my opinion, and much more relaxing. They were definately looking for a different style this year than they were last year. It seemed like last year they wanted dark colors, high gloss, and little to no conversion. This year was all about muted tones, pastel colors, high contrast lighting and matte finishes. Conversions actually helped you win in this one. It blew my mind that people were flying in from Russia and GB to compete (Natalia Melnik wasn't the only Russki there). In the 40k categories, it seemed like everything that won was Space Marines, as usual, (except for the Slayer Sword, which was actually a Tyranid Lictor!) and in Fantasy there had to be at least 6 of last year's Games Day Chaos Lord model in there. The only category that was kind of weak was WHFB regiment, and you'll see that in whatever White Dwarf this gets put in (hint- Minotaurs won Gold in it...).

As for me, whew! Steep competition across the board. I entered 4 categories, WHFB Single, WHFB Monster, LotR Single, and Diorama, and made first cut in all of them. In WHFB Monster I won a Silver Demon. I would say I was stiffed, as it is the natural reaction of any painter, regardless of whether you were beaten by a 12-year-old or by Michelangelo, but I couldn't get a really good look at the model that won Gold because they put it right next to the light and the shadows were so harsh I couldn't make out much about it. I'm sure it was excellent, as there was a lot of other stuff in that category that was fantastic. The thing that threw me, though, was that what I entered into that category was, in my opinion, my least competative model. I didn't think it would do well at all. But, I guess it just happened to be what they were looking for. Anyway, it was a good time and I highly suggest people enter Golden Demon if they get a chance.

Thanks everyone. Even Melnik took Silver in one category. I couldn't believe some of the stuff that only made First Cut in a few categories. There was a Kroot diorama that was just downright amazing that didn't win, but then a different Kroot diorama won Gold that was just fantastic. To me honest, the Silver and Bronze in diorama were kinda lack-luster, and I think there were a few better ones that didn't win anything, but such is Golden Demon.
BTW, the trophies this year are much brighter than in previous years. I put my silver on the shelf next to my other ones and it almost looks gaudy next to them.

I put an extensive coverage here. You model was VERY difficult to take picture off. In fact the only way to do it well was to lean it over something and shoot from slightly bellow.So whatever I tried was very much out of focus and I had to drop it. Just as a lame excuse: it was funny to see how GW photographer was struggling with this miniature.

Congrats! I was there for my first Gamesday this year and it was a blast! I didn't get to see all of the golden Demon entries but I remember yours!

Hah, yeah, I remember watching that. The lady who won Bronze in that category and I were, ironically, hanging out at the time that they were taking the pictures and I remember telling the photographer not to feel bad, as I'd been trying to get a decent photo of that model for months now. My wife actually commented when it was on the glass shelf that it was the first time she'd been able to look at it from the right angle.

BTW, Skeeve, congrats. I remember you and your miniatures there. I thought that the Gorbag would do better, but then again, I felt like my Skaven Assassin vs. Ogre Tyrant would do better too.

I can see how having everything on the 3rd floor would be good for the judges / painters / etc. But man, I didn't even get to go see them this time! Luckily folks like you are posting pictures, so I feel a bit better about it

I never stood in line, I just went in and walked around. It's wierd, people naturally form a line, especially in the U.S.

On another note, I'd love to see something like a Golden Demon Masters Tournament, like once every 10 years or so, where all the Slayer Sword winners compete with each other.

Grats though, a nice mini. Maybe put some thought into how your mini will be photographed in future comps? Its all about presentation I guess.
