Made this on Bolter and Chainsword. I don't want a really colorful marine force and camo is hard to pull of on miniatures for me, so I made this. It is supposed to "hint" at a camouflage scheme without actually being so. One uses Adeptus Battlegray and the second uses Codex gray.

I like the 2nd one more, though if you're going for a quasi-camo scheme the 1st one would probably make more sense, unless we're talking winter camo...

I think the first one is really cool, especially if you paint army symbols or squad numbers in a really contrasting color to the brown like red/orange or a popping white.

I'm not a huge fan of bone on marines, but if you are going to do it make it bright and highlight liberally. The second looks better but... I don't really like them this detailed.

Son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes...

I actually quite like the theming for the marine. If you do paint a marine this colour you have to post a pic of it .

Thanks for the feedback. The second one was supposed to be a remake of the first with light gray but I had forgotten the original had that "Gryphonite Granite" color. Looked rather gray to me until someone said it was olive brown :p

Here's an updated edition of the original:

Oh, nice scheme, that last one. Have you tried with making the lower legs that lighter grey as well? that might look good too.

Hmm, and for the helmet, you could adopt a theme somewhat similar to blood angels, with different classes being represented by different colours. Dark grey for tactical, the current colour for assault and light grey for Devastators maybe?

not going to lie, the first two looked like color palates for a dentist office waiting room (or at least the carpet). The third one doesn't look so bad, but I had some really mixed success with a muted green/black army in the past. They just wind up looking mottled, usually.

Oops, that last one is supposed to have a solid gray helmet vent crest thing. I'll check out light colored legs though.

Ailaros, do you have any pictures? What do you think you could have done to pull off the scheme better?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
What would you suggest for boots on scouts? Their fatigues are the above mentioned Camoflauge green (like the Marine uses), so black or brown?

I've made an interesting discovery. On my gray-primed scouts, the Vallejo "Camouflage Green" turns out too yellowy for my liking. The "Cayman Green", equal to Catachan Green, has a much more "earthy" look to it and it looks closer to what B&C's painter calls Camo Green. So I've switched over to using that. Also, I've read about Adeptus Battle Gray's consistency and I've decided to go with Codex Gray (Cold Gray) that I already have.

Scouts will have cloth fatigues of Cayman (Catachan) green, armor of Cold (Codex) gray, and their equipment will be Cayman (Catachan). Bolters have an upper receiver of Cayman and a lower of Cold Gray. Shoulders will probably be in the same Codex Gray for scouts but may be black for Marines. Here's an updated version from B&C:

I like the last updated one, I would however go with a darker color for the 'soft' armor parts so they look recessed in the armor and not on top of the plate itself, but if youve painted a few and you like it then go for it!

I agree; I'm going to be using Reaper "Ash Grey", which is a dark color though. What would you suggest?

Paint one up and post a pick, its sometimes hard to translate those Bolter and chainsword renders, for some reason I have a feeling the lighter schemes would translate better, but thats just me.

they look pretty nice. you could think of mixing the colours up a bit to give the marines some individuality. i.e. on you most recent variation you could swap the knee-pad and lower leg colours around on a couple of marines. can't wait to see some painted up

I dont want to discourage you....but I think the scheme could use a little color. The scheme kind of reminds me of the Red Scorpions. I know there are thousands of chapters out there and your are free to choose whatever colors you want, which is what makes the Space Marines so fun...the possibilities and combinations are practically endless; but I tend to not like the schemes that are earthly with very neutral colors. Maybe its because the warriors of the Imperium are supposed to be bright, hide from no evil, and are proud of their Chapter's lineage. I would simply recommend adding a color that makes them pop a little more.

Oh, dont even get me started on camo marines....seriously, because when I think covert, quiet, and concealed, I think of a 7ft guy in a hulking chunk of ceramite armor with a generator affixed to his back!

I like the last one the best, I think the muted colors look pretty cool. If the fluff makes them a somber chapter it could really work.
