Expensive, random, no ranged weapons. If you wanted a CC unit mind as well get bezerkers. I mean sure a few of them with MoS in a rhino isnt too bad but other units could be more useful

IMO, they are quite functional, though they require the play to bend to the unit rather than the other way around.
YMMV, cause there is alot of hate going on, but haters gonna hate...

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

There is a reason it's called, Glass Half Full.
Treat it as a mental exercise maybe?
I will admit (as I did in the thread I posted) that they are overpriced and that they do have an uphill climb.
It does not mean they can not perform or do well. As said, YMMV...that was my way of avoiding that particular responce AF.

You really ought to start a new thread for a completely unrelated question.
That said, Trygon Prime. Six attacks, self-sufficient, a shooting weapon, and WS5.

I would answer what anyone would answer: Niether, go and play Vampire Marines or Lycan Marines. Otherwise, agreed, new thread. Let this sink....... or we can keep it around so that in several weeks time it will be here when the next person asks about possessed and we bring up the Cup of Shat and Cup of Fun out.

Agree. all future threads asking whats wrong with possessed to be redirected here, on pain of having the finger nails of the OP removed with pairs of plyers.
Or we could just post on this thread once a week or so. That way everyone whose even thinking about asking this question can see that its already been asked, and just read whats already been said like 100 times before.

I actually have to agree with this. Even though they may be as good as grandfather nurgles left ear half the time, they do have uses.
But I think that if they had bolters, AF would love them.

Again, as described in the linked thread, I feel they are a counter attack unit through and through, which takes away the need for grenades.

@Mentat:
I'm not trying to be confontational.
I'm working within the framework that one doesn't 'wish' for something that they don't have.
I had put up the thought experiment with respect to maximizing their usage with what we, get regardless of cost.
As a result, one problem was the lack of grenades; a 'solution' was proposed. I suppose 'feel' is not the right word.

big question of design philosophy there. you should figure out what the tools are that you need for the job, and then find the unit that best conforms to those requirements. don't look for reasons to field units. not every unit is worthwhile, not every unit has its place. you get good armies by selecting good units around a particular theme. it requires forethought. you don't bring a unit and then look for ways to make it useful.

I didn't mean to be confrontational. They are an assault unit in a marine list with no grenades. I still don't mind using them, I think they are OK in the right situation.

@ AF: It's a thought experiment. For some people that is fun. You are talking in a fully competitive "I'm gonna rape you" mindset of the whole codex vs. the infinite metas. That is not what I'm talking about, nor is that the only kind of 'tactics' in the Tactics section of 40K. I'm looking at solely the possessed and how they can be applied successfully...and people have done it, not just me. @Mentat: I didn't feel you were confrontational, lol. I was just replying and covering my bases, explaining the rationale of why I made my comments. Some may take it with the wrong point of view. I think they are OK in the right situation.
I agree, and that's the crux of it. Not everyone is looking for a 'drop the soap' episode and it's up to the player to set up the 'right' situation. No body, even I, are saying they are AWESOME-SAUCEBBQ good. I'm only hazarding that they are functional but expensive.

Agreed the randomness means you have to have upto 6 ways of using them against X number of opponents in a tournament. 4 of 6 may be useful 1 might be okay and 1 you would be kicking yourself for wasting the points. (Scout comes to mind.)
Also they tend to be CC-oriented with little or no AT so in 5th Ed meched environment you have much more dependable and flexible options to use.
All that said, they are a fluffy thing to play for fun games just not a viable tournament choice. For elites, give me termies or chosen. If I want speed, raptors or even CSM bikers will guaranteed give me that rather than randomness.
Next codex, this is one I hope they keep but remove the randomness and let us pay for the desired ability.

I want them to be good. just once. they sucked in 3, they sucked in 3.5, they suck now. sigh. at least in 3.5 you got to choose the options they took. you didnt get good options but you at least knew what you were getting...

Well for 3.5 they were a little above suck as they were generally the body guard for an IC, because chosen were generally too expensive.
In addition, rending was pretty powerful with them, esp. coming out of a raider of old.
Other than the awesome bodyguards they WERE, these new 5th ed ones fit comfortably with Kharn...
