Hey, Im thinking of purchasing the games workshop realm of battle gaming board and thought it would be best to see what the dakka users think.

Has anyone ever had or know anyone who has had any problems with the gaming board? Is it easy enough to set up?
Is it a good surface to play on??

I've got one. The only issue I have with it is the sand/pva breaks off pretty easy. It's worth the extra expense of priming the whole thing properly before putting on the PVA.

Prime How would i go about doing that?

Priming is spraying or otherwise painting the surface prior to painting/sticking on sand/etc to give a better surface for the later coats of paint/pva/etc to stick to.

Edit: I also believe it is a good idea to wash the boards in warm water before painting/etc as well to help remove any gunk left over from the moulding process.

I've got one and I love it. It's super expensive and an investment in time and effort to paint and flock properly but once done it looks good and more importantly, looks 100% better than any home-made cack I could come up with.

They look nice but it's so much cheaper to just get some foam and hardboard and make your own.

Our group has 2, and we love them. It really completed the playing experience for us. Being able to move the tiles around really lets you change the fell of table in only a few seconds. And by picking the second set, we were really able start playing on some leveled terrain. I wish they had more tiles available so we could mix it up even more. It is definitely worth priming and flocking with high grade materials though. The flocking kit GW sells is great (if a little pricey).

Thanks for the advice i would have never thought of that.
Does the board itself connect together? I was thinking of either going for an Artic theme or a desert theme

From what I understand, the board has a number of clips which hold the pieces together.

It does come with clips to hold the tiles together, but we never use them. The table we have it set up on has felt fastened to the top (which is what we played on before the tiles), and it seems to stop the tiles from sliding around. Ours is flocked in a typical green/brown scheme, but the tiles would lend themselves well to an arctic scheme too.

Excellent review so far Think ill be buying one next time im in the store
I also think it would be better if they brought out more sections for it or a totally diffrent style of board completely but we can only wait and see what the future has in store Anymore advice on little things to do with the board or any other subject related to what i should do to the board will be greatly appritiated

The only other thing I can suggest is that you get everyone who will be using the board to help paint/flock it. We had 8 guys working to paint/flock our boards and we got them done in a little over an hour each. Oh, and if you have a vacuum that has an adjustable speed and a hose, I'd give the flock a light going over on the lowest speed. Until I vacuumed up the excess, our table was shedding like mad.

Whats the best flock and materials to use on the board?

I had really good results with the kit GW sells, but I bought a big tube of cheaper generic flock to supplement the GW kit, just to make sure all the areas we wanted covered got a good layer of flock.

Woodland Scenics is fantastic for doing game boards. You can get flock in various colors, and they also have a fantastic sprayer for their scenic glue that makes it a breeze to do.

I have a ROB but I've never played on it :( But I have it ready if I ever have the chance to host a game.

just make sure when you set it up the table it's on can cover the whole board, if you lean on the edges of the board with nothing underneath it, you could pop the square out and make all the minis fall everywhere.

I love the RoB board. I got one for my birthday a few months back which was great because it saves me the intial cost for it. However getting it painted up/flocked etc has been a lengthly and fairly expensive process that i still haven't finished, i'm about 80% done.

I'll hopefully finish it off soon and get it up here on Dakka, i'll post all my steps too because I feel the extra effort I have put in has made it a damn sturdy gaming board.

Buy one, if you got the money to spare you won't regret it.

I've played on it and I gotta say I really liked the feel of playing on the board and as others have mentioned moving the tiles around to change the board up a bit is great as well.

I also have the Citadel Gameboard, and so far it's worked nicely. I haven't flocked it, just painted it up, the plastic surface is good to play on, and it doesn't shed any random materials. There's well enough texture on the gameboard to make it without any sand, grass is nice if you want that look.

Cheers

My LGS has two and they are very nice, on the topic of leaning on the boards, the plastic also bends when that happens so be careful.

Personally, because I'm quite cheap I'll be going for 6 2' by 2' PDF boards flocked and with holes for pins in them. Slightly easier to store and much cheaper!

I am of the other freaction not liking the board:
Much much too expensive.
Not modular enough, you always have that hill somewhere.
You need a lot of work to finish it, as unmodified it lets miniatures slide off the hill sides.
Rolling dice on it seems awkward: dice rather jump than roll and make loud noice (this is what I heard and deduct from the material).

I prefer gaming mats from
1.) Hotz Mats http://www.hotzmats.com/felt_purchase_mat.html (European Field for Fantasy, Western Town and Moonscape for 40k)
2.) Sabol Combat-Mats, currently OOP http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Product_Review:_SABOL_Combat_Mat (esp. Sand, but you must tolerate the advertising on hte mat)
3.) Zuzzy mats http://www.zuzzy.com/ (look good, esp. the new city mat, but need painting and they smell ... and the postage is extremely high)

Plus your own hills and terrain elements.

apocalypse sized city of death. I'm about to start a board like that but smaller and with lots of elevation differences (tall buildings, usable sewer systems, canals, rublle piles)

Definitely a fan of that Zuzzy.com website. I would definitely invest in that instead of the GW Board, its just too much money for some unpainted board. Making your own can be soo much cheaper and easier.
