In this thread here I was having problems finding a suitable 40k scaled shotgun. Well I came up with my solution to the shotgun problem. Taking a cue from lifeofshan (thanks for the heads up Death By Monkeys!), I used the Cadian flamer to create the nozzle of my shotgun.

I only had one spare flamer after making my veteran squad's special weapons so the other five troopers are waiting for a bits order to arrive but here is how the final shotguns should look:

These models are a combination of Victoria Lamb's Highland Guard conversion kits, Secret Weapon pith helmet heads, and Cadian torsos/weapons. I am pretty pleased how they turned out and the Victoria Lamb kits are a dream to work with.

That's a brilliant idea,I've been having some trouble deciding what to use for my own Praetorian Vets shotguns..I may have to borrow this idea.

Criticism: The shotgunner has a lasgun magazine still attached, so unless that's some kind of combi-weapon I'd snip it off

If you want something to put on the underside, you can clip the grip off of a bolter and make a nice pump for a shotgun with that.

You have a point, however the magazine could always be explained in that it's an automatic shotgun similar to the AA-12....just a thought.

EDIT: Of course,if that were the case, the magazine should perhaps be "beefed up."

Yep, I left the lasgun clip in place to act as a clip for the shotgun shells. I envisioned the 40k shotguns being more automatic than pump anyway so the clip just seemed to make sense.

why not then use a bolter mag or yet a round mag from the thud gun? would look cool....

Yeah you definitely shouldn't use what is recognisably a lasgun magazine unless these are laser shotguns?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Though I guess a lasgun magazine is actually just a power-pack... so find some other explanation for ammo and you could say it's supercharged or some other sci-fi bull....

LOL I am amused that the clips are such a sticking point for people. I am afraid the clips are staying as is but I appreciate the suggestions for non-lasgun ammo bins.

Real world reasons why the clips aren't changing:
1. I have already invested waaaaay too much money in making this unit ($45 for the VL kit, another $50 for the Cadians, plus $10 for flamer bits and $15 for the Praetorian heads) that the thought of buying more bits for the clips sounds unappealing.
2. The clips work in terms of how I envisioned a shotgun in 40k functions.
3. I flat out don't wanna. I actually like the way the shotgun looks as is.

Fluff reasons why the clips aren't changing:
3. The Imperium of man is all about redundancy. Using the same sized clip for shotgun shells that lasguns use means more redundancy at the munitions plant that produces arms. That means one day lasgun power pack canisters* can be produced and the next shotgun clips can be produced all without retooling the assembly line.

*I am referring to the outer canister of the power pack, not the battery itself.

Thanks as always for the suggestions!

Well the last I'll say on the matter is consider using a tinsy bit of greenstuff to fill in the diagonal groove on the magazine and then paint them a different colour: Thataway, once painted, they'll look considerably different to your lasguns.

That is a good idea, consider it done!

I'll also give you kudos for your method with the rest of the kit... I mean, although I see you have a lot of the venerable Praetorian models, I think that the method you've used is a pretty viable way for those that consider the Praetorians either to be too expensive or too limited in poses to make an army

That all fits together fantastically well

What tartan will you be going for?

I was thinking of using the MacFarlane black and red tartan. It will tie in nicely with my other red Praetorians and it is the Clan my family had allegiance to so why not?

Thanks again for the comments everyone!

Ok,some seriously bad pictures....but hopefully the "street sweeper shotgun" pattern I was going for can be seen,I ran out of GS and am currently "snowed in",but should be completing at least 4 of these soon.

Also included a shot of my "melta conversion".

Nice looking unit, but they all look to be carrying meltas/flamers!

Shortening the lasgun stock by about 1-2/5s would make a big difference in making them look like shotguns, that and greenstuffing in the holes on the 'flamer' part at the end.

Totally digging the blue/red scheme though

The flamer ends are meant to replicate heat shields for the shot gun, similar to what is seen here in this real world example:

Man that's a great looking squad! you did good sir!

are they getting a Chimera or a Vendetta/Valkyrie to ride in?

I was thinking a Chimera to lend a little oomph to their low strength weaponry. It would be fun to include this squad in a game with my "counts as" Creed figure and give it the scout special rule, along with camo cloaks and snare mines. I am not sure if it would be a waste of points or not, but I like the idea of so many flamers and shotguns starting the game close to the enemy's soft targets.

They're red..just a very bright red.

@ Dark Traveler..

I just noticed that your Veteran Sargent is kitted out in the same way as the one I'm working on,including the use of the same Secret Weapons head.
