Not stupid in the slightest, mine are done with boltgun metal trim, finished them just as they were then reinvented by GW. If anything brass will give them a more 'aged' look. Post some pictures.

I think most people paint the trim brass and then highlight it with gold. Pics are too dark to tell for sure, but they look good.

The only thing stupid is that you're worrying about it.

These minis look just fine. Very Black Legion-ey.

As long as they have a metallic trim of some sorts I can still recognize them as Black Legion.

Although the best Black Legion I ever saw was a guy did them in the Sons of Horus scheme, and called them the renegade Black Legion (basically refused Abaddon as their leader).

Anyway, the guys look very good.

I don't trim with gold anymore, brass and tin bitz looks much older and shadowy, I'd leave them "as is".

Personally I prefer the brass trim to gold, makes them look more battle hardened. How the heck is Abaddon not a big gibbering spawn by now? he has failed so many times surely the gods are fed up with him.

No, but if you WERE doing the Gold Trim legion, then yeah, you'd need gold trim.

The great Gold Trim Legoin is so badass, I love all the fluff they've gotten from black library books

I too think the brass looks good.

And as for the rest? Well, until the Eye of Terror campaign (i.e. the 13th Black Crusade) he didn't have me (formerly known as Taumarshal), Khornesone and Tzeentch2k telling him how to beat those cowardly corpse followers.

Out of my mind, back in 5 minutes.

It's a little hard to tell because the pictures are dark but I think your models look good. AKAIK There is no set color that Black Legion trim has to be. I am using copper for the trim of my black legion army because I the combination of black and copper looks awesome. In fact, I chose Black Legion because I wanted a black + copper paint scheme.

This is the first half of the squad I am currently working on.

This picture is a comparison of the copper trim unwashed and with 2 different washes. On the left is the model washed with the equivalent of GW Devlan Mud, which I will be using for the rest of my models. The middle is washed with a black wash that I tried first but was not quite satisfied with. The right model is unwashed for comparison.

Hope it helps to have some more examples to look at. I have more pictures on my blog (link in sig) and will soon have a projet log on dakkadakka as well.

Edit: Fixed picture. It worked in the preview but disappeared after I posted

Even if you "failed" by painting their trim brass, you can just work it up to gold with, well, one coat of gold. I work up from Tin Bitz to Shining Gold for all the gold I paint, and it looks ace.
