I've been playing Tau for awhile now and have a pretty ghetto color scheme that involved drybrushing Shadow Grey, followed by picking out some armor panels in Shadow Grey. A Tau Sept Ochre highlight on the gun and I was done. I wanted to do a little more as my painting skill has definitely improved over time. I've had this Commander Shadowsun model floating around in my closet for quite some time. I had never painted her as she isn't exactly dynamite on the battlefield.

I decided to pull her out and give her a quick paint job. This took me about 3 hours or so. The accompanying Fire Warrior was painted afterwards to see whether or not I liked the scheme for regular troops. I do. He will be joined by 11 of his closest friends!

Please give me any feedback you have. I am aware that there isn't any highlighting on the models. I'm not totally convinced it's needed, but am open to suggestion. I've used Bronzed Flesh as a highlight to the Tau Sept Ochre before and may try that here as well.

First up... Commander Shadowsun... the Fire Warrior will be in the next post.

The classic scheme is always nice, and these guys are painted really well. I think that the blacklining really makes them look very neat. A whole army painted this way will look very nice on the table. Good job.

Nice bold 'cartoony' look (which I'm not saying is a bad thing) but I'd probably go with a wash of sepia on the armour just to shade it a tad with minimal effort. Also try and keep the paint a little thinner, specially with the foundation paints. Otherwise they are a good TTS.

Look forward to seeing more.

They look alright I guess, but there's a limit to how good flat colour with slightly-too-thick paint can look. Highlighting is always needed.

Very crisp paintjob, well done. I like the alternative take on Shadowsun's armor. But I'll have to agree. Maybe add a wash over it?

Sounds like I definitely need to add some shading... I'll experiment with washes on the Fire Warrior and see what I end up liking. I may do a wash and a line highlight. I'm thinking Devlan Mud might work... I'm not really sure and I don't want to ruin the work I've done so far. Expect more pics in a couple of days as I make changes. I need to go to the local GW store today and pick up more paints.

Very neat job.

Some shading/highlighting would definitely add to the overall impact.

You could try hard edge highlights rather than an overall wash.
