Hi I was wondering if anyone knew much about using the snow flock or if it actually looks good on a base. I'm wanting to make my orcs and gobbos mountainish so I was going to paint the bases adeptus battegrey (They have no flock on them yet) then add the snow flock when I get it. would this look good? I'd appreciate pics of bases with snow if there are any.

Personally, I'd say no, as i always had trouble getting GW snow flock to look anything other than white fluff.

Is how i do snow, which is very very simple, bicorbonate of soda (not baking soda, bicarbonate)(tube from tescos or morrisons, couple of quid will last you a while) mix a bit with water untl it flows like fresh icing, let it dry, looks like snow and sparkles too, though it is somewhat fragile, you shouldn't have any problems if you treat your models decently (and even if it messes up, a bit of water and a brush will clean it right off)

You can also do snow by mixing bicarbonate of soda with glue and putting it on, but personally it always ended up looking like slush or ice not fluffy snow.

Actually, the GW/citadel is the wrong scale for GW minis...

It is rather large particles and looks more at home on larger Military modelling and dioramas.

I used some on a SoB and it looked too 'fluffy' to be snow.

Perhaps try multiple layers of Jo Sonnja's Texture Paste (roughly 200g for $16) in a 1:1 ratio with water.

Paint it onto the areas you want... and let it set.

Im presently working on a large scale diorama for a modelling comp and this is working quite well...

I also had the misfortune of using the GW snow flock. At a closer look it's just white grass.

Only way I got it to look alright was to mix it with PVA then when it was dry, give it a coat of watered down PVA.

General rule that I have employed: There is ALWAYS a cheaper and equally as good product available when considering GW's modelling products. With the exception of their models .. I'd avoid GW products.

I'm not saying the quality is not good .. I'm saying that you can acquire equally as good products (which don't carry GW branding) for a lot less elsewhere.

I like stuff.

Bicarbonate of soda IS baking soda.

Also this is what I use on my bases and it looks fantastic.

Thx for comments. Yeah that makes sense I'll look into bicarb or just mountainous rocky colours.

I just use talc (I hop that's the name in English xD).

I put a thin layer of PVA and add that, then depending on how much snow I want, I add as many leayers I want to.

Talcuum powder/talc is what it's called.
Does it retain the whiteness and not go transluscent?

I found this stuff at Hobby Lobby for $4. Pretty easy to work with and works well. I mixed it with some sparkle glaze as well. It takes a while to dry but once it's about halfway done you can work it to reshape it somewhat which is pretty cool.

I just grab some sand from my backyard and mix it with glue. You can get a lot of terrain/basing effects with varying colors and types of dirt/sand.

Brilliant suggestions here!
@stewy37 I imagine 'Hobby Lobby' would be the same as the 'Hobby Craft' stores here in the UK. They certainly carry the DecoArt products there. I'll be sure to have a look next time I get to one of my local stores.

I use the GW flock quite happily, but that's mostly because getting hobby supplies around here is a bit of a joke.

You can get nice solid effects with it as long as you don't just put on a layer of glue and put it on top, thats not how it works. You need to mix it into a thick paste with pva and then press it on to the base to get a nice solid snowy look, then dip it back into the flock so the top stays soft and slightly fluffy. Done right it can look like really good thick snow, but snow in general never really looks right to me in small patches, the realism of it does not transfer to mini's very well.

I have just used Bi Carbonate of soda on the bases of my wolf guard in my gallery, it works well, and looks 'crunchy' if that makes any sense? :-)

That's why I went ahead and posted a picture. I figured if the actual product was shown then it would be easier to find it or something similar in whatever local stores carry that type of product.
I'm really happy with it. I was actually looking for some supplies to make my own mix when I found this, and it doesn't get much cheaper.

The Hobbycraft website is not that well stocked imho
They don't seem to offer the range of items available in the stores.

They are not the cheapest around either.

I'd go with the Woodland Scenics or GF9 stuff, though WS is cheaper and comes in a huge pot.

Alternatively you can use tile adhesive/grout. Very fine particles that scale well with 28mm. Mix with a little water and a bit of PVA and you can do pretty much anything with it. It also dries rock hard so will be tabletop use proof for almost any eventuality. Its also probably free as I guarantee that have ever had to put up tiles you will still have a pot of it lying around for ever and a day as it reeally lasts!

You also don't even have to paint it if you have brilliant white either!

No, pretty much anything paint or basing can be had cheaper and better through non GW sources. I'd recommend Woodland Scenics snow instead. Cheaper by volume, and works great if you use it correctly (mix it with watered down pva glue/watered down tacky glue/craft glue, then lump on with a brush, it will give the proper snow pile look).

What about cornstarch? it seems like it would work really well for snow, if you just mixed it with some elmers glue or something similar.
