Crappy pic, but shows the idea I'm going for. I'm happy with the one, but I only had to put holes on one side because of the ball. How shall I go about the rest, p/mers?

What about pressing the GS onto some fine mesh/netting?
Not entirely sure what the next move would be
would have to play around with it.

I was just thinking about that actually I'm about to experiment with the chainmail on Chaos Knights.

--------

It looks decent actually. I took a blob of GS and rolled it over a bit of chainmail. I poked it from the other side repeatedly with a filed toothpick. I slowly, bit by bit, lifted it off the chainmail with two toothpicks in the same spot on either side at a time chopstick-style to maintain the "holes." From there I shaped it into a Y-ish net shape and transferred it to the model, shaping as necessary and fixing the texture by applying pressure with toothpicks on both sides at the same time to maintain shape and add stability. If I had a better camera I'd take pics, but I think this will work. It could look cleaner, but I'm sure it will improve as I do it

Edit: Still open to suggestions!

There must be some kind of fine mesh you could stretch across it no? Some kind of fabric? so that rather than sculpting it you'd have the real thing there.

Go to your local HW store and look for a screen repair kit.

Alternatively, just get some aluminum screening. Since it's about $1 per foot (x 3 feet), should be pretty cheap.

lol... Wow dude. 2 for 2 today on bad advice.

It's been a LONG time since I've had a lacrosse stick in my hand, but if I rememebr correctly, isn't the pocket made out of woven leather strips? Just roll out a really thin piece of GS, apply it to the area where you want it. Wait for it to cure a bit and then poke a buttload of holes (maybe just depressions rather than full-on holes) with a sharp sculpting tool. If you don't have any actual tools, use a small paper clip, safety pin, thin toothpick, whatever. If you angle the depressions slightly it may look more woven than mesh/net. That would just be a matter of trial and error, I suppose.

While this may not be the way a "professional" sculptor may do it, like a G-Dubbs sculptor, it will work fine in such a small application. If you were trying to make a rolled-out, in-use tuna fishing net or something, yeah... not gonna happen. A little pocket on a teeny stick? Perfect.

Finland... the country next to Sweden? No! That's Norway! Finland is to the east! No! That's Russia!

You might consider trying to use mesh, or fabric to make the net.

I second the window screening. It'd recommend Fiberglass instead of aluminum though, as it's easier to work with.

You could take a page out of the model car world's book and use the mesh from a pair of swim trunks. Set it place, coat it with some thinned down white glue, and you're set. IIRC it's takes paint well after that.

Window screen won't work that small. Most times, the wires that make up the screen are not connected to one another (ala glue or whatever). Rather, they typically rely on the sheer amount of braiding to give it strength and stability. when you cut it down to the size you need, it will probably fray just like a knit sweater. Plus, you have the structural integrity of the screen bit being compromised. You will find it sliding side to side when you hold it. Meaning, the squares made by the lattice-work of the wiring will slide back and forth, turning the squares into diamond-shaped, back and forth. This will inevitably cause the outer wires to work their way out of the mesh.

Finally, when you cut down the screen to your desired working size, you will have the pointy ends of every wire sticking out of all 4 sides. On an application that small, what are you going to do about them?

In my experience, screen is not the answer for something this small. If you have never used screen for anything, it sure sounds like the best choice, but I can assure you, it isn't. Of course, this is just my experience. There may be some screen material that I haven't used yet.

Ymmv.

Yeah, I'd got and get yourself some steel screening, like they make screen doors out of.

Medical Gauze, my man. Medical gauze.

That, or soak duct tape in lighter fluid/gasoline until it has destroyed the glue. The weave on the tape should be about right.

Or medical gauze. I hear that works.

I would second the advice to stay away from window screening.

Some options that might work, however

1 - the lining from a tracksuit or swim trunks, if you have them lying about. I think Sin mentioned this above.

2 - wall patch tape / joint tape. This is the stuff a painter will put over a hole in drywall before spackling over it. It's a grid of plasticky threads with one slightly tacky side. It dries out easily, and I imagine it could be primed over easily. It MAY be a bit too wide in the lattice for you, though, but if you build off of Ghidarah's memories of the leathered pocket (as opposed to the more modern pure mesh style) you might be able to pull it off.

3. Go to Michael's and get some granny grill. I don't really know what the "official" term is - I think it's a cross-stitching blank or something. It's semi-flexible white plastic mesh in 8x10 sheets that is usually stuck back in the yarn section. It's worth having on hand anyway, as it is ridiculously useful for building terrain.

Just cut out a bit that's slightly larger than the intended stick head, dunk it in boiling water (use tongs, obviously), and you should be able to mold it into a decent pocket shape pretty quickly. Hide the edge with some GS.

So far pressing GS up against the mesh has worked the best out of everything mentioned (I've tried *all* of it; boring day off yesterday ) minus Strelka's post. I really like the idea of his option 3 so I'll give that a shot and post the results. Thanks for all the ideas so far, folks!

Before you snip the crotch out of some swimwear:

1. Use your own, or
2. Get permission first if they are someone else's
3. If 2. wash them, you don't know where they've been.

Use some medical gauze (is that the right spelling on it? It looks weird) either way, just make the outside hoop part and then gauze for the net. Soak them in watered down elmers glue and when they dry they will be rock hard
