Im working on the ultramarines 4th company. This was formally the 6th but due to a flaw in the color scheme Im changing it to 4th. This is not done and if you have any tips on painting then please comment. I will be posting the updated pictures soon.

not the camo on the cloth instead of painting it white. I thought that since there scouts the y woudl try to be as sneaky as possible (being blue and all makes this kind of hard)

allright, looking good man, but you have put to much paint on the brush then the models, so try putting less paint on your brushes, and with the eyes try and use your smallest brushes on the smaller details

A couple things you could work on, get some highlights and do the colors in steps. For instance, start the blue with a slightly darker blue and highlight with a lighter blue, or start the cloth with a bleached bone and highlight/dry brush with a skull white. It would add a lot of depth to your models. Washes are another route or option to get a similar effect. Currently everything looks very stark and flat. Just my 2 cents, I'm not a pro, but that's where I'd spend my time improving.

If you are doing the Ultramarines 6th company you have to change the shoulderpad trim colour. The gold trim is the 2nd company. 6th company has black trim if I remember correctly.

It has been varified by John Hurt that the Ultramarines are indeed the greatest space marine chapter.

6th company is orange trim, they are also all tactical squads with the ability to man bikes, so making a biker force is their other thing. If your not going for a biker force, then the choice of 6th company is odd. Also the terminators are not 6th company but 1st company, so they would have white trim.

If your wanting to keep the colors, you have a second company force, consisting of 6 tactical squads all with transports, 2 assault squads, 2 devastators with transports and 2 dreadnoughts.

@ andtheyshallknownofear:
Greetings from your brothers in 4th company. I have to agree with the above posts about highlighting. It doesn't take anything too dramatic to make a huge difference, one layer of highlighting will really give those models definition. Another suggestion if I may be so bold, actually it's more of a question/suggestion. Are you watering down your paint before you use it? If you thin down your paint with a little bit of water before you put it onto the model you will get a much more even coat.

On the shoulder pad rims:
Technically the color for 6th company is orange but if you don't like the idea of orange shoulder pad rims why not go with bronze or, better yet, copper? I know that Vallejo makes a metallic copper paint. I haven't used it myself so I cannot comment on it's quality but I'm sure that someone on Dakka could tell you. The GW paint Dwarf Bronze could work too but it's not particularly orange and may end up looking like gold from across the table anyway. Of course, the only thing that really matters is that you're happy with your models so if you want to paint your sixth company with gold shoulder pad rims then go for it.

Thanks thats actually a really helpfull comment. I'm working on highlighting more. Its not that I'm being ignorant and pretending that the 6th has gold I genuinly thought that they had gold like 2nd. I will probably repaint (ill consider buying some orange paint or just going for a different company). Thanks for the sugestions on painting but if your going to preach to me about folowing the fluff then do it on my 6th company army list.

Just went back and "re-looked" I like the battle damage. As others have suggested some blending, highlighting, or drybrushing would really make these pop.

Gah! All these first time armies with decent paint jobs springing up keep putting me to shame when I look at the first minis I painted!

Anyway, great job, I think they could do with a minor highlight on the trims of their armour however to really bring out the deep blues and add some contrast.

They look good enough to go on a table, you wanna quick look good effect though wash everything youve painted in black and brown ink then paint everything your base colours again but leaving a bit of dark left your painting is neat enough to make these look from good to awesome, check out my BR space marines same models as yours and ultramarines http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-39511-14878_Ultramarines.html

They're looking good. 6th Company has orange trim (as mentioned before) and is 10 Tac Squads and 4 Dreadnoughts (page 17 of the SM Codex). I am painting my SM as 5th company, my first army ever. I know it's the easy way out but I don't have the colors for other companies yet. So, I picked one I could do now.

Some tips to work on would be the faces and brush technique. I always try to paint the same direction and with a small amount of paint. I am sure you can go back and clean some lines up with a smaller brush. I have the same problem because I only have the "starter" brush... I'll try to get some pics of my units up. I am about done with my 15 Tac marines.

We follow in the footsteps of Guilliman.
As it is written in the Codex, so shall it be.

Are you using a flash when taking your photos? I notice there's a lot of glare and that's usually the cause. If so, try turning it off and use a simple light box with 1-3 focused lamps:

Put something taller than the models you're photographing on a flat surface and tape a sheet of white printer paper to it so it slopes to the surface. Place a sheet of paper on the surface under the sloped sheet, then another sheet standing on edge to each side of the sloped sheet. The final product should look kind of like a skate ramp.

Then, place lamps to either side and, if possible, to the top or front of the set-up. I have a desk lamp with a flexible arm that I can move into position easily that cost me $20 at the local big-box. It's also got a natural light bulb making it perfect for painting under.

Finally, if you have a macro setting, use it. It looks like you do, so you're a step ahead of the game.

The other folks here have given you some great advice already about your painting which is pretty awesome for a beginner. The only thing I think I can add is that when painting freehand lettering, it helps to use a sharp pencil to lightly write on the area first, giving you a guideline. Also, start from the middle and work your way to either side to ensure that your lettering is a consistent size and you're not crowding.

You're off to a great start, let's see some more!

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
