I had this crazy idea, and it won't leave me alone, so I have to build it now. I want to create a "spec ops" IG squad that is stacked up to breach a door. Are there any thoughts on how I could go about doing this justice? I picked up one of the old 20 man sets of Cadian shock troops at a screaming deal of $15 USD, but that is the only IG set i have currently. Any advice on this idea would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to make them Special Forces style but not Stormtroopers/Kasrkin then maybe check out Forge World's stuff. The Hostile Environment or Respirator packs will make them stand out from normal Cadian Guardsmen. Also, if you want them breaching a door then maybe check out the FW Hardened Veterans with shotguns? At least one of your guys at the front with the shotgun would look decent for a standard door breach. Unless it's some huge reinforced concrete/metal door or something...

Failing this, it'll really be a case of converting them and making custom poses so they don't just look like straight-from-the-box stuck down to a diorama.

I like this idea, not sure why they wouldnt just have a LRBT just blast half the building apart... Oh well.

Pig Iron models, they have some Very neat looking spec ops kind of heads that fit well on cadian models.

Otherwise, of Course you need to have one guardsman with a nice battering ram. you could probably model that out of any cylindrical shaped item, gun barrel, missile launcher tube etc.

Paint them black, and grey, make them Tacticool with shotguns and fun stuffs.

Good Luck!!! I Look forward to seeing the models when you get around to modeling them up!

I'll try to start on them tonight. I'm not sure if I want to do the battering ram, a guy kicking the door in, or the more modern shotgun the doorknob style of actual breach, maybe I'll do up one of each and make the diorama changeable.

In ur base, sniping ur doodz

You should have one setting up a breaching charge like in MW2, because that is awesome. Otherwise it seems like a cool idea.
I hope to see it soon,

I was also thinking of one doing a snake camera under the door, anybody like that idea?

Sounds like a great idea

I did one of my Stormtroopers clearing a doorway (below), but a whole stack would be aces. Would you do it as a diorama or as separate models on a larger scenic base?

I'd use them as vets with a demo charge and some melta guns for breaching doors and killing tanks! You can get some characterful bits for tough guys like these from the Cadian and Catachan command squad sets.

My intent is to have it be a diorama, but that's merely as an effort to stop myself from beginning to collect a new army.

I say drop the melta guns but the demo charge could make a nice door breaching charge, then have some readying grenades.

Oh, but I do, unfortunately, my back pocket doesn't.

So it strikes me that I have no idea where to start with this piece. should I start with the base or the troops? Should I sketch this out, or dive in and see where it goes? This is the first piece I've ever done like this, and I really want to do it justice.

Start with the base. You'll need specific poses for everyone, so imo the base would be your best bet.

As for the squad, I'd recommend looking up some stills from movies/shows where people are breaching a door. If it's a weak(er) door, then you'd need...

1 guy with ram in front of door
A couple guys behind him covering doorway
Everyone else on one side
(I'm guessing)

If he's wiring explosives, then you'd need...
One guy wiring explosives on door
Everyone else stacked behind him *against the wall

I play CoD, so I kind of know EVERYTHING about the military. /sarcasm

But seriously. I'd like to see this. Best of luck.

Rico.

oh and I'm a visual guy that dives right in so I'd recommend doing that. I can picture things very clearly in my head. But whatever works for you. Maybe a rough sketch, or perhaps base it off a picture (from said movie/show)? That way you have a super accurate thing to go off of.

Thanks! So I now need to find a building for my guard to breach... I play COD as well as Battlefield and... I'm a Marine Corp brat, so I actually spent time paintballing in some of the breach training facilities when I was younger, but yeah, good advice.

Door will go on the short side, between the two "pillars" I think, kinda making an entrance to an underground bunker. This came from a deli meat container, and I've just base coated it as it came to me clear. Think I'm going to either do a cement, or maybe a mudbrick feel to it, what do you guys think?

Very cool looking piece of terrain there!

Im looking forward to seeing you work on it!!!

So what are you thinking about weapon wise protruding from the bunker? I think if you used those pillar areas as the Firing Points, and had a few Heavy Bolters popping out it would really drive home the fact its a Bunker.

Now since you are doing this on a bunker, what Breaching weapon have you decided on? Since a shotgun, door ram or anything small is gonna have no effect on the reinforced armor. Possibly a stachel charge?

Lol. Sorry for the lack of progress on this. I'm not sure I'm even going to put weapons in there, maybe just firing slits, or some sort of optical devices, ie. cameras.

Definitely going with a satchel/plastique style charge, but as I've made almost no progress since I prime my lunch-meat container, I expect this to be a long process. I tend to do things proper, and because I all but insist on it being that way, I tend to be forever finding/ making "just the right" part. Also, having several projects all at once doesn't help. My desk is about the size of an average coffee table, at least in surface area, so one project fills it, and I have many more than that currently.

I do however, now have access, thanks to my brother-in-law, to a whole trunk-load of Woodland Scenic supplies. And he has a ton more experience with terrain building, so I should have little trouble finding inspiration once my bunker has a hillside to be built into.

Took some time today to do a mold for my hillside, it's sitting with some plaster in it now. Gonna be heavy, but at least it's a diorama, not a playable piece.

Plaster casting fail. So now to bust out kindergarten art skills with... Paper Mache! Once finished drying, I'll coat it with drywall patch to giive a better texture, and and paint, flock and such. Picture!

Question time! I am debating putting a hole in the top of the hillside, either for ventilation as if it's a mine, or maybe an underground missile silo. Should I? And if so, which would be more interesting to you?

I like the idea of a Missile Silo! It makes it seem like the assault team has a Real objective. Something a little more interesting and tangible than merely taking a bunker. You know?
