For collaborating with xenos on Moscovia, there is not greater crime less than treason. By the powers of the Holy Inquisition, I hereby declare the Order of Faith Excommunicate Traitoris. Justice will be swift and merciless.

-Inquisitor Coteaz

Inquisitor Lord Antonio and Canoness Dianus stood on the bridge of the Black Ship Eternal, listening to the vox message. Dianus groans. She expected disapproval from the reinforcements after they learned she collaborated with Tau and Eldar forces against a Tyranid invasion. However, she didn’t expect the High Protector of Formosa to be amongst them.

Inquisitor Coteaz was notorious for being overzealous. He had a formidable reputation for possessing a vast network of spies and powerful allies across the Formosa sector. Anyone displaying even the slightest hint of heresy would warrant his wrath and soon disappear without a trace.

“It seems you’ve made a powerful enemy, Canoness,” amuse Antonio.

Dianus frowns and turns to Antonio. “Last time my Order was subject to Excommunicate Traitoris, there was an Inquisitorial Inquiry.”

Antonio grinned. “Unlike you, I have some immunity against Coteaz. He cannot persecute me without repercussions. Even though he’s the ‘High Protector of Formosa’, his resources and network of spies aren’t as vast as mine.”

Antonio’s shoulder sank. “Unfortunately,” he continued softly, “I cannot extend the same protection to you and your Sisters. If I did, war will escalate. War between Inquisitors is neither good for the Imperium or the galaxy. Nevertheless, I will secretly lend my support from the sidelines.”

“Good,” replies Dianus, “I despise cloak and dagger. Honor is fighting face to face on the open battlefield.”

“Careful Dianus,” warn Antonio, “a man of his stature will use any means necessary.”

Spoiler:
8 - 7 victory for the Grey Knights

Afterthoughts
Spoiler:

Wow, what an awful way to start the tournament. Losing the first game crushed my hopes of placing first or second.

Throughout the game, I was plagued with bad luck. I won the roll off to go first and deployed my Rhinos out in the open. Unfortunately, my opponent rolled a lucky 6 and stole the initiative and precede to wreck both Rhinos. My Exorcists performed poorly. In turns 5 and 6, they failed to kill a single Chimera out in the open.

In hindsight, I should have committed my forces more rather than playing the shooting game. Had I read my opponent's list prior to the battle, I would have realized none of his henchmen were wearing carapace armor or were armed with Power Weapons. That gives Sisters the edge in close range shooting and assault. Lesson learned, always read opponent's army list before the start of the game.

.....

Dianus grits her teeth. Her forces were pinned down by heavy fire. Coteaz had inducted an impressive array of diverse units in his personal army including Imperial Psykers Battle Squads, Grey Knight walkers, henchmen, Inquisitors, and even a Vindicare Temple assassin. Coteaz had also proven to be a skilled tactician. In the initial preceding of the battle, he had setup an ambush and caught the Order of Faith by surprise. Heavy torrent of Multi-lasers and Autocannon quickly disabled the Sister’s mobility. Without their transports, the Sisters were sitting ducks.

Dianus carefully peek over a rockrete wall that was giving her cover. In the distance she could see the broad flat hulls of Chimera transports advancing towards forces. Leading the front was a towering bipedal steel monster, an extension of a Grey Knight warrior meant to combat Greater Daemons.

“Sisters, suppression fire,” orders Dianus. A disciple line of Battle Sisters unleashes a torrent of fire at the Nemesis Dreadknight. Just before the bullets hit, a loud crack splits the air and the Dreadknight Nemesis was gone. Dianus’s eyes widens in disbelief. “What, impossible?! How could something that big teleport?” Seconds later, another loud crack erupts behind Dianus. A high whistle sing in the air and warns Dianus of incoming danger. She ducks in the nick of time.

The Nemisis Great Sword barely grazes her as it the massive blade sweeps over her head. Rolling to her side, Dianus unsheathes her Eviscerator and saws into the metal walker’s steel frame. Coolant spurts into Dianus’ visor, temporarily blinding her. The Dreadknight swings his sword high. Dianus raises her Eviscerator to block. The massive sword smashes down with tremendous force, knocking the wind out of Dianus and she blacks out.

.....

Dianus wakes up in cold sweat. Images of the Dreadknight flash in her mind. For moment, she wondered if she had died and her soul joined the Emperor’s side. But a mother of all headaches hits like a crashing Land Raider, reminding her she was still mortal. Cursing, she laid her head back and took note of her surroundings. She was lying on a plush bed covered in rich embroidery. The room was opulent with detail wallpaper, thick velvet curtains, and white moldings. A crystal chandelier hung off the ceiling. Two heavy wooden doors on the wall facing the foot from the bed had were carved with the Inquisition insignia and the Imperial double eagle.

Dianus sat up and frowned. The setting wasn’t the only change. Someone must have strip and clean her body while she was unconscious. Now she was wearing a blue silk evening gown. The dress dangles off two shoulders straps, clinging to her curves, and loosely dropping down to her ankles. It was a perfect fit.

Just then, the two heavy doors swung open. Three maids enter carrying cases. The lead maid curtsied before Dianus. “Lord Coteaz wishes you will join him for supper,” she said.

“Fine, but in return you answer three questions,” reply Dianus.

The maid gave a slight nod, gesturing Dianus to continue.

“Where am I?” ask Dianus.

“You are aboard Lazaro, Inquisitor Coteaz’s personal cruiser.”

“What has become of my Sisters?”

“They are currently locked up in prison bay, but fear not. Their accommodations are generous. Mistress, please be quick with your last question. We cannot keep Lord Coteaz waiting.”

Dianus gesture towards the cases the maid was carrying and ask, “What are those for?”

The maids giggle to each other. “This is make-up. Now please hold still Mistress.”

.....

An hour later, Dianus stood in front two heavy wooden doors, leading to the dining room. One of the two henchmen guarding the entrance opens the door and ushers her in. Inside stood a long table drape in white cloth. Silverware was set at both end of the table. At head sat a bald man with a white moustache.

“Ah, welcome Canoness. I’m glad you can join me. Please, have a seat,” said the bald man, gesturing a seat next to him.

An attendant step forward and pulls the seat out. Dianus accepts the invitation.

“Inquisitor Lord Coteaz I presume. It’s an honor to meet you.”

“Ah! Now that I’ve seen you up close, I cannot help but admire your beauty. You look like Saint Lucia whose legendary beauty is said to cleanse souls of foulest heretic.”

Dianus was taken back by Coteaz’s humble personality. “Ha, ha, if that was the case then why did you capture me and declare my Order Excommunicate Traitoris?” she joked.

Coteaz’s expression hardens. “I hoped we could avoid this topic until after dessert, but fine, let’s get down to business.” Corteaz pulls out a data slate and lays it in front of Dianus. “This slate contain histories of your past missions,” informs Cortez,

Dianus clenches her teeth. “Where did you get that?” she angrily demands.

“Your portfolio is impressive,” continues Coteaz, “Under your leadership, the Order of Faith has persecuted many rogue Adeptus Astartes chapters, battled many xenos, and saved countless Imperial planets. However, the last mission on Moscovia is evidence of your unorthodox beliefs. I strongly…”

“Lord Coteaz, if I may,” interrupts in a hush tone Dianus, “the decision to join forces with the Tau and Eldar was my decision. I implore you, whatever punishment you pass on the Order of Faith, let is pass to me alone. I am responsible for all of this.”

Coteaz chuckles. “No, I won’t deliver judgment,” he said in a light tone.

Dianus frowns. “You won’t?”

“Canoness, believe me, if I wanted you to be dead, you wouldn’t be sitting here today enjoying a nice supper with me. But if you want to repent for you sins, then my interrogator would be happy to oblige.”

“Coteaz, what’s the real reason for me being here?” demands Dianus.

For a moment Coteaz stares deeply into Dianus’s eyes, as if trying to read her thoughts. He finally reaches under the table and hit a few button. The lights dim and a hidden access panel in the middle of the table opens up, revealing a holographic projector. Video replays a battle between Coteaz’s forces battling gray armored Adeptus Astartes. Dianus instantly recognize them as Space Wolves Grey Hunters, a chapter she had problems with in the past.

“A month ago, a Space Wolves light cruiser accidentally destroyed a few of my ships, thinking they were pirates,” said Coteaz. “Naturally I seek remedy for their negligence, but they refused. Battle ensued and as of now has come to a standstill.”

“And that’s where I come in,” comments Dianus.

“Precisely,” reply Cotez. “I was impressed after reading your battle reports on Cyron I and Fenris. Your Order has much experience in dealing with Adeptus Astartes. With you on my side, victory will be in my grasp.”

Dianus cross her arms over her chest. “What’s in it for me?” she ask.

Coteaz grins. He wasn’t used to taking requests from prisoners. But if this ends well, having the Order of Faith under his control would be a powerful asset. “First off, I’ll free and rearm you and your Sisters. Second, as for the reward,” Coteaz closes his eyes and thought for a minute. Finally and light bulb slights up inside his head. He smirks. “It will be a surprise pending on your victory, but believe me, the rewards will be unimaginable.”

That was the Chaosiest Inquisition army I've ever seen-- I liked his daemonic Dreadknight conversion.

Tough luck on the first battle, but at least you ensured it was a close game. It looks like you lost primarily to luck, but it happens. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of your tourney reports.

In your defense that was a horribly display of bad luck as well. Multi-lasers smashing the Rhinos is ridiculous, especially since they are AP -. The Exorcists also did what they always do...were inconsistent.

I do not think you played it 'that' wrong by staying back some, but I might have moved forward a bit more aggressively to try to get some bolter fire down on them. Those psykers are especially vulnerable. Did you take your Shield of Faith rolls against the psychic powers?

I thought that you could beat that GK list, but I guess it just wasn't your day. Always sucks to get caught with your pants down (or initiative seized), and his list isn't even nearly as shooty as mine!

Exorcists remain consistently inconsistent. Wonder if GW will improve upon them with the new WH release.

Looking forward to your next 2 matches.

My opponent originally planned to play Traitor Guard, but decided to switch sides at the last minute. After seeing his army, it makes me wonder whether Chaos have an equivalent to the Inquisition.

For some reason, I always roll poorly for Shield of Faith.

Thanks! Multilasers are indeed AP6. I had a lot of fun coming up with a story that will set the stage for the next 6 battle reports.

Actually a list with Coteaz is less lucky to seize the initiative as he can reroll the seize the initiative roll if the first one isn't a 6, so a list featuring Coteaz has double the chance to seize over a regular list, something to keep in mind if you face him again.

To further the above comment Coteaz lists have a 30.555555% chance to steal (if my maths is correct). Deploying in the open is generally a mistake against these lists even if you get first turn and get good fire lanes (I do tihs regularly with my GK's and punish those who don't use cover). Make sure you have plenty of cover at the start. Nice report.

Nice BR SabrX !

Too bad you lost for 1KP for a first game.

I was a bit surprise you didn't play your sisters a bit more aggressivly. I was worried about a shooting duel because, you know, this is when we need Exorcists the most that Exorcists only fire a small petty rocket... (each round)

But melta destroying tanks seemed to surprise your opponent a lot (!).

Anyway, it is always a pleasure to see your Order of Faith in action !

Thanks for the correction, I had it in my head they were AP - for some reason. I was looking in the WH codex for one earlier and it doesn't appear in the armoury...not that I use overpriced WH chimeras anyway.

In my opponent's case, he didn't even need to reroll. His first die landed on a .

I definitely won't make that mistake again.

Yeah, close game but no cigar. If only my 2 Exorcist killed something in the last 2 turns. The Chimera was out in the open!

Strangely enough, I also can't find multi-lasers in the WH codex. I think it's been AP6 all along. I never thought of it as AP -.

Thanks. It took me longer than usual writing this battle report. Part of it was my lengthy background. The other part is mustering enough courage to write a battle report knowing it ends in my defeat. Its difficult for any writer to post a losing battle report. Part of the reason why I post these losing battle reports is to review my mistakes. The other part is healing over a lost. This is the 6th losing battle report that I've posted.

That's a great effort.
I really enjoy your battle report so I am glad you write such parts.
As part of a story, defeat happen, only to reinforce the will and the power of heroes

And, at least, your readers don't know who are going to win when they saw one of your BR ; and that's great also !
