just have a wack at everything that you can get your hands on. And in terms of gaming don't take on hardened veterans as they will not be fun to play against. play people of the same level. wait untill you are confident enough to smash face.(painting wise) And its all just persistance, reptition, taking your time and not getting frustrated if the end result is not what you wished for. Its all just practise!!!! oh and those orks are great your well on the way to becoming an awsome painter!!

One thing that might make this ork look cooler is changing the leather to a lighter colour. lighter leather can create deeper recesses and gives the model a sense of depth. this also complements the ork skin, as ork skin is shaded and sort of light. light leather has deeper shades and has more of a colour contrast It looks so much cooler.

gj on the ork, nothing much to add on it appart from two things.

1. Drill the barrel, it makes them look even cooler.

2. Putting some devlan mud or gryphonne sepia wahes ont he metal to make them look rusty a little bit since orks are looters and the metal they loot is not fresh out of the factory.

Amazing ork for a first timer!! Especially the skin. ork skin is really hard to paint so kudos!

A few items: you should get a pin vice, a small drill, and drill the gun barrels. That's not critical but it's something people notice.

you will want to invest in a pot of Delven Mud wash - Next to Thraka Green it's an ork's best friend! That axe and gun - too clean. Slop some mud on it and you have a right orky piece of equipment

Welcome to the hobby!

Your boy looks great! As stated earlier, drilling those barrels will make them a notch better. (The citadel hand drill works fine for this.)

If was to be suuuuper picky, he has some blue in his hair, maybe that only shows on camera.

And the rims of the base could use another thin layer of paint.

So in closing, yeah, a great job! Great choice with orks They rule.

Thanks for the comments guys, ive made a few changes to him since reading what you recommend.

Ive highlighted the topknot more, weathered the weapons, though I think they will get a second coat because its not very visible, gave the base a second coat, touched up the teeth and eyes.

I'll pick up a Drill and vice tomorrow if GW has them instock, to try and make the guns look better.

Tondar, good spot on the blue, bit left over from my trying his hair blue I think.

My only other problem is I am just starting a second Ork and while I like the colour of the first skin, its not that visable when looked at on a table, so tried brighter (Dark angel Green, then Catachan Green, then Goblin Green.

Which seemed a bit neon and overly bright imo. Any tips?

Brighter is sometimes better. Maybe just stick with the scheme that you have. Models don't always have to stand out on the table top. this was from the GW website it's not to neon but not to dull IMO.

For someone who's "new" at this, you sure do a great job! You already seem to have shading, washes, and most of the other advanced techniques down pretty well.

Greens tend towards the neon as they get brighter. The key is to go lighter, not brighter. Mixing a touch of an appropriate brown (I like Snakebite Leather for Goblin Green, Scorched Brown for Orkhide Shade, and mix in proportion to the brightness for anything in between) into brighter greens only darkens them slightly, but it does a lot to pull them back into the more natural, earthy range. Keeps your lighter orks looking like split pea soup, not astroturf. If they get too brown for your taste, using Thrakka Green wash like a glaze will help subtly tint them back in the direction you want.

First model? Wow. You paint better than I do and I've been doing this... uhm... a long time. You already have natural skill and an eye for detail. Your painting will only improve as you gain experience and learn technique.

Very well done. Looking forward to seeing more!

And yes, do drill the barrels. If you're not sure what to use, do a Google search for Pin Vice.

Thanks again for all the help,

Just playing with the skin on another one, better highlights (to my eyes anyway) to try and make the muscles stick out a bit more and lighten it up a little, which is alot more visible from a distance than upclose in the photo.

Also picked up a drill and now have barrels to my gun(s)

Also used hell of alot more water in my paints, so ending up with a nicer finish (so far)

Trying with different colours this time :

Primer : black
Base : Catachan Green / Scorched Brown (2:1)
Highlight 1 : Catachan Green
Highlight 2 : Catachan Green / Goblin Green (1:1)

Will go slightly lighter for knuckles etc later on.

Impressive first model, damn. I'm also new to the hobby and painting in general (just ordered all the basics yesterday) and I hope my first model is anywhere near as good as yours.

Dude that model is amazing. I also suggest drill the gun barrel. A pin drill is about 7$ at any hobby shop.
