Hey all, I finally broke down and bought Creative Gamescapes Spaceship X set. It's a $35 (plus $10 shipping) set of 3D modular space ship corridors suitable for 40k, Space Hulk, Star Wars minis or most other space games.

They're also fine corridors for a subterranean base in Necromunda or a modern game.

http://www.creativegamescapes.com/

Until now the only similar products I've seen were Dwarven Forge's Sci Fi corridors (very nice, pre painted, more expensive) and several 2d products like Litko's Space Corridors and Star Wars Galaxy tiles (now OOP).

Short form

It's a good solid product. 1 set covers about 24"x12" so you would need at least 6 to cover a 6'x4' table for a large space ship battle. 3 to 4 sets should cover any normal Space Hulk, Necromunda, RPG or Star Wars Miniatures needs.

I'm very happy and plan to buy the 'Dreadnaught Bundle' which is $240 for 8 sets.

What you get

For your $35 you get 4 large sprues with floors, doors, rooms and walls.

(apparently I forgot to photograph this one)

Stretched out you have over 4' of corridor.

Or you can make a fairly simple lay out

They assemble easily even without glue and with only minimal filing. No flash or other problems. Plastic cement worked fine on them.

The corridors

The corridors are just wide enough for a terminator base, but too narrow for the larger base or for 2 25mm bases.

I kind of wish they were a bit wider to allow for 2 models to stand side by side or for 65mm base so a dread can rampage through but I can live with what I have.

The rooms

You get 2 rooms, a 3x3 room and a 2x2 room.

The 3x3 can hold 10 models pretty well or 3 large bases.

The 2x2 can hold a 65mm base with room to spare.

Each room is designed to have 1 entrance, they could be built with more but you'd have to cut up the walls to make it work.

It looks like if you buy multiple sets you can combine the rooms to make larger ones.
Walls and doors

The walls are about half as high as a 28mm model, a compromise that makes these look right but still makes it easy to move models. Models with dramatic poses also fit well thanks to the lower walls.

There's 3 doors in the set which can be placed at almost any juncture and removed easily. There's also 1 dead end wall.

Customization

The set is modular and can be reassembled different ways.

The pieces slide together with teeth and grooves and hold together well. You get a T juncture, a + juncture and a corner. Obviously more sets would mean more options.

I was a bit disappointed there seems to be only one way to assemble each room and corridor though. For example the two rooms are designed to have only one entrance and their walls are not interchangeable. But that can be fixed with cutting.

The 3x3 room has some options for the central floor panel

but that seemed a bit pointless. I would rather have had more doors or some sort of control panel built into the walls.

Though they do seem to work as doors if you need them to.

Potential uses

As I said this looks tailor made for Space Hulk, especially since the corridors are just wide enough for a terminator. Other space games can also use them and, it just so happens, I wrote 2 40k scenarios that require space corridors, an Emperor vs Horus game and a boarding action mission.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/379468.page

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Space_Hulks_and_Boarding_Actions

Mrs Kyoto pointed out these can be used as a wall and bunker and complex. They could be used as is or you might add some plaster earthworks to the front.

The corridors are a bit plain but I think any one of us should have enough icons, techno bits and skulls to dress them up a bit. Though it might make it hard to move some models.

The diorama potential is also pretty high.

Storage

Storage is easy

They fit into a 12" long pile and I had no trouble fitting them in a standard large GW box.

Communications and shipping

I ordered off their ebay site

http://shop.ebay.com/creativegamescapes/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

And got it within 3 days. Communications with the company were fine. Shipping was a bit hurty but given the size of the box I can see why it cost $10.

Conclusion

Like I said up top, this is a great product, durable, well made, lots of potential.
There are a few things I would have like to have seen but nothing that hurts my enjoyment of it.

I'll certainly be getting more of them and I recommend that if you have a club or a store pick up a few sets to have around. I can see a lot of potential uses for them even in normal 40k games.

Here's hoping we see a dungeon set before too long!

Let me know if there are questions or if you want to check anything.

You might also want to look at Litko's stuff

http://www.litko.net/products/Space-Corridor-Master-Set.html

It's much cheaper but 2d and not as good looking.

This is really the best I've found.

Great review thank you sir!

Very tempting product and with a little bit here and there would make the corridors and rooms a bit more interesting... Humm Imagining a corridor with all the gigerish patterns I usually sculpt... again, very tempting.

These corridors are relatively cheap and durable, but also a bit bland in design. The half high walls are not enough for me to create a 3d illusion. I prefer the precoloured cardboard tiles from Space Hulk or Doom for creating the right atmosphere and diversity in looks.

BTW there are several more options if you want 3d corridors:

1.) Worldworks (pdf, print yourself, also alien ship) http://www.worldworksgames.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=5
2.) Armorcast (only floor is 3d) http://armorcast.com/store/index.php?cPath=120_153
3.) Hirst Art (cast your own plaster corridors) http://www.hirstarts.com/molds/moldssci.html
4.) Ainsty http://www.ainsty-castings.co.uk/

Great review Kyoto!

Did you have a chance to test the plastic to see if it needs to be washed, how well it takes paint, and if it can be glued easily?

Looks like you need several sets to really do Hulk justice, but that is to be expected.

IMHO, the best SH terrain is:
6.) Leviathan by Battlebuild http://www.battlebuild.com/id2.html
http://www.battlebuild.com/catalog/c13_p1.html

I am currently building a massive board with hundreds of these. They are really great (although will only fit smaller bases).

They glued fine with Testor's plastic cement, I've not had a chance to prime them yet.

The second is pretty easy to fix.

I looked at making double-wide corridors and it looks doable with a lot of filing and sanding. Laying a plasicard floor on top of some tiles is another option.

If there were more of the 2x2 rooms it would be easy.

Thanks for the review, Kyoto.

There is one fairly major issue with using these for space hulk though.

That issue is the doors.

In space hulk, the doors occupy a space, but in this kit the doors fit between spaces.

It is nothing that cannot be overcome, but is a source of consternation if you are looking for the absolute perfect space hulk corridor solution. But some creative rules and albeit minor rules adjustments concerning the doors will be necessary to make these work for space hulk.

That said, these are the bomb for space hulk and it should be fairly obvious that space hulk players are the targeted consumer base. Be warned though that communication with the company can be rather hit or miss. They might be better now but a couple months ago they were ghosts.

With communications, I know one of the owners of the company and he also runs a FLGS. He has partners so I can't speak for them but I know the owner was swamped quite literally since he had the roof partially give in at his store during a storm. It was a mess and it caused more damage in the playing area. It is all fixed now but that might have been the reason that communication was a bit slow back then.

Well I ordered 8 more sets, guess I'll be ready to do the Emp vs Horus in style next month.

And looking closer at the pictures on their site it's clearly possible to make larger rooms out of the ones we have.

Look for pictures from me soon.

Good to know, as i was just about to criticize the small size of the rooms. Things like engine rooms, cargo/craft bays, gun decks, etc are gonna be pretty big, as the things inside them are pretty big.

Well if anyone from Creative Gamescapes sees this (I dropped them an email) I'd suggest:

A double wide corridor
Some special walls or tiles (consoles, etc)
A damaged corridor
A dungeon set
Sell sprues on their own
Offer a $90 3 set bundle, I think $90 is much less of a commitment and 3 sets will be enough for most players.

Love the Corridors, love your wooden flooring even more. Good review. Got a YT-2400 scale model, this stuff would make a brilliant interior if I magnetised the top, and modelled the interior to scale.

Interesting stuff! I would have preferred the walls to be slightly higher as they are a bit short imo. As kid said, more variety could certainly push me into picking up a set of these!

I kinda like the walls the height they are, could use them as a defense line in a pinch if you so choose.
