So I managed to scavenge some Imperial Guard parts from a friend and managed to throw together a basic Guardsman body - minus the arms! However, despite a lack of these and the Green Stuff left on the torso piece which I had to scrape off, I decided to go ahead and paint him up. I was going for a Police theme with this guy. The reason I'm putting him here and not the showcase is because he isn't finished. He isn't based, his arms aren't attached and his boots are still only base coated.

But I'd still like some feedback. Since he's a WIP, I'm willing to take any suggestions - particularly on what to do with his shoulder pads once I get round to them (what colours/patterns/details to do on them etc). I am wanting to eventually start a very small non-Codex-legal IG Police-themed force so I thought this would be a good test before I bought anything.

So yeah, any thoughts on how I can improve him? Like I said earlier, his torso was covered in Green Stuff in the recesses which was hard to totally scrape off which explains the rough texture of his chest piece.

Why not file down the shoulder pads to look like they have just got cloth covered arms.

I'm willing to try that out. It would take a bit more effort per soldier though, but I won't discount it. I'm also wanting to keep them as non-military as possible by not using and greens, browns, tans or anything that - in the 40K world - is associated with military regiments, so that also ties in with what you said about minimizing the military look of the guys.

Thanks!

The blue is perfect for police overalls! i think it's worth trying out black armour like in slugga's pic..but the blue armour is good too!

Perhaps use some wire to make some simple batons on belts? or night sticks or something if you were feeling saucy

Oooh..also, round riot shields and visors on helmets..perhaps using blister pack plastic, just cut a little rectangle with some little nodules on the top two corners to glue to helmet...spot of green stuff over the nodules then paint. Would work well for counts as stormtroopers or similar....

Wow, I like this idea actually...might steal it for a diorama..lol

I think you did a great job! You might consider using Renegade Militia Weapon arms pack. It would give them a unique look.

I reckon a nice red for the shoulder plates would fit the police motif pretty well, I like the look of them though already. White belt and stripe on helmet makes them stand out in a simple but effective way! And good job in the eyes...I only try to do eyes on my marines and they all end up wide eyed and enraged!

So these guys are local verisons of Adeptus Arbites?

Imperial police would look pretty much like what we'd call riot police, i think. The blue looks good. Yes, removing (or reducing?) the shoulder pads would be a fairly easy way to keep them looking more police-ish and less military (although quite a bit of work). Give them high tech 'power cudgels/truncheons/batons', effectively reduced-power versions of power weapons. Gloves for everyone.

You may want to use some necromunda pieces for the police. Try using the shield arm and shotguns, should work fairly well.

Good looking idea for an army. If your thinking of using different arms, why not use forge worlds elysian stuff, the padded detail would look pretty good in that blue, or how about just leaving one pad on the facing shoulder?

Here's a WIP example:

if you do a mech guard army, the chapterhouse studios wheel set for the chimera would be great for a Police APC look.

The pen is mightier then the sword, but you must keep a sword handy for when the pen runs out of ink.

Thank you very much for all the replies! Loving the ideas coming out here.

I'll try and convert Chainsword arms to some sort of powered nightstick thing and see how it looks. I'm checking out whether it would be worth buying the Cadian Veteran upgrade from FW so my guys can have Shotguns instead of Lasguns - just seems to fit the Police theme a bit better. Thanks for the link to the Adeptus Arbites - I'd seen them in an old WD Necromunda feature and didn't know you could still buy them! Will need to weigh up the cost of buying them for parts though (since I am using Cadians and not the Arbites). As for the Chapterhouse set, I searched for it and came up with a Chimera with large wheels instead of tank treads? If that's it, and not someone's own conversion, then that'd be perfect! I'm also working on wiring blue and red LEDs to the top of a Chimera (storing all the wiring/power inside the crew compartment) and making a 'glass' shell for them (probably out of Blister pack see-through plastic) so their Chimera has working sirens! But that's a bit further down the line...

I carried on with my test model and shaved off the Shoulder Pads of some old Cadian arms (found them in my bits box, so they must have been from the old-new Cadian boxes that had the artwork of Shock Troops) and attached them. I don't have the tools to resculpt and kind of fatigue texture so they're a bit flat at the moment. Also, the layers of paint over eachother are getting a bit thick now but this is only meant to be a test model anyways! I also used some of the suggestions here of giving him white gloves which you'll see in the pics. This must have been some kind of special Cadian helmet since it had alot of optics/communication gear stuck on the side. I found two dots that I conveniently painted red/blue as a kind of side mounted siren thing. I don't really know, it just seemed to add to the look! I also added some rank chevron to break up what was otherwise a bit flat blue area... Oh and before you say - I realize now having seen the pics that I've got bits to patch up paint-wise!

Any thoughts? For the final design, I'll probably do his helmet black to match the armour - but retain the white stripe down the middle of it.

(Apologies for the picture quality - especially in the last pic - I don't have the camera I normally use for mini pics on hand right now!)

You should already start thinking about the ranks...
For example:

Mall cop: Conscript
Cop: Guardsman
Sheriff: Sergeant
Riot cop: Veteran
SWAT: Stormtrooper
British policeman: Commissar ( )
FBI/CIA agent: Marbo
Etc.

Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee.

He looks great, but have you considered a white helmet with blue stripe? That's also very in-theme with many police forces worldwide. Perhaps do one up that way and compare them? After all, you can easily repaint over a white helm.

White helmet and gloves would suit a police theme nicely.

To simplify removing the shoulder pads and avoid the need to sculpt cloth folds in the shoulders, consider just trimming the shoulder by a mm or so but leaving a slightly boxy shape, then round the edges - to represent flexible kevlar armour inside the clothing.

I'm liking the smaller shoulder pads, they look like a clothey sort of padding if you understand me haha
Another little idea you might like is making carbine lasguns

sort of like in these pics I've stumbled upon;

and a lasgun-shotgun conversion

Anyway just a bit of mind juice, keep up this project

Have a look at EM4 Miniatures' metal ranges, you'll find cops (vaguely 1950's USA), others in baseball caps, a "tinpot dictator", assorted covert types, all with a variety of shotguns/smg's etc. A bit shorter than your average Cadian, but as a seperate force hardly noticeable.

Also, they're nice, detailed models, and at just over £1 each, much cheaper than anything from GW.

Looking good. I would recommend Chapter House (little bias as i have done work for them), there kits are always great quality and that chimera kit would look just right for a police style army. As for weapons, have you thought about just making your own? Its not too difficult and you have a much better choice of what to arm your minis with. Saying that Chapter House have just released(or are about to) a huge range of rifles etc, most of which would suit a police themed army.

Anyways, heres my tute for making your own weapons: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/285141.page

Looking good so far. I like Hits_the_spot's idea of using a single shoulder pad on one arm. You could also keep the uniform as is, but paint the helmet navy blue to provide higher contrast with the eagle badge and the headset.

Yeah, funny you say that cos i'm currently in the process of making winged stormtrooper as part of my drop troops themed army. I got the wings from ReaperMini. Hopefully they're gonna look pretty boss, like something from Advent Children. At least that's the plan.

Have the 3rd ed IG codex but never played IG, was it the Stormtroopers who could Deep Strike?

Tried googling Advent Children, but didn't really find any pictures with wings. So would it be angel wings, or wings of light?

Some things to consider:
Maybe put on the letters MP for military police on their helmets, just to give a hint of what they actually are.
Some serious reposing is needed or else theyre just gaurd with a blue paint scheme. I think itd be hilarious if you did stuff such as making one giving out a ticket, blowing a whistle, etc.
Lastly, keep in mind police dont carry rifles every wjere they go, so i would suggest putting the rifle on his back or something instead.
Thats about all, good luck!

"Whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword obviously never encountered automatic weapons."
