Hey all, i've just started playing warhammer 40k again (starting because i used to enjoy the painting, but may play if i find some people)
after leaving wow for good, haha.
anyway i just stumbled across this website and thought, since i have little to no one to compare with or get helpful criticisms from i would post whatever I'm working on, so that i may get any tips to help me be a better painted
anywho, without further adieu this is the first attempt at nose art for my first Valkyrie, for my vostroyan army

please note that i's a tad messy on the edges, any help with shading etc would be much appreciated, or techniques you may deem helpful!

also any ideas for a better caption for the nose art would be much appreciated haha, kind of spare of the moment

Are you a fan of the wire by any chance?

I think actually the less than perfect edging makes it feel more authentic, like it was painted on by loving ground crew rather than an assembly line.

Besides, whoever said that aircraft, guns and attractive ladies don;t mix hasn;t seen this.

I was just having this discussion with a friend of mine who wanted to paint a pinup on his storm raven. i think the guardsmen would be painting the women and the kill counts on the valk's and vendetta's because they are just like normal soldiers. the marines wouldnt unless it was a primarch. but thats beside the point. good work. i would personally like to see more of the body as that was part of a pinup, you know her laying on something or leaned up against something, but for a first go around it looks pretty good. its hard to paint things on such a small surface. if you could have made the gun look more like a bolter or laspistol that would have been nice. something more like the period she would be in. but all in all good job.

thanks for the tips, i see what you mean with the leaning, i wasn't sure what post i was going for when i started it, as for the gun i was trying to make a boltery looking thing but i know what you mean by it should be a more relevant gun.

as for the attire, i agree, i'm working on trying to figure out how to paint in a vostroyan coat, big and furry, i'm more or less going for the "Russian bikini babe" look.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

Honestly, I am not a fan of the "painted look" If you look at a lot of the WWII nose art there is a simplicity, cleanliness and crispness to it that just does not translate well when painted on in this small of a scale. I really think your best bet is decals. Take a look at this Valkyrie I did I while ago;

Now there is still more work that needs to be done to the decal, some blending with the surrounding area and such, but if you look at the image in comparison to the model, it looks "right" some of the other images posted, the pinup seems out of place. There is an abundant amount of these pinup type decals out there that are perfect for the scale we are working in. 1:48 WWII decals work great, and I have used these ones many times as well;

There's nothing wrong with decals, but I prefer hand-painted art. I guess I'm a stickler for creativity over accurate scale. Besides, you don't have to be completely accurate in scale to WW2, 38 millenia have gone by. They'd have to change something

The only criticism I have of your art is the hair looks flat. I'd add a few highlights to it.

I must say that hand-painted work, regardless of whether it is great (in your case) or not, is better than any decals. Maybe you should put a brightly colored outline around the nose art, or whatever you call it. Gold or yellow might look good.

I guarantee you that I'm not really as smart as the test says:
