So I started this prior to Blackadder posting the very nice 3D rendering he found. I went in a different direction after seeing this.

Thanks to Blackadder and Tebrey for all the really great tips and things they are putting out there.

Anyway, please don't hit me with too many heat rounds, I know it is not the accurate.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
This thing quickly got out of hand as I saw it for my experience and skill in the art of scratch building.

I like the detail that went into it but feel like it could have been cleaner...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I also think I could have done a better job of organizing the build. As far as what gets and in what order. I kinda skipped around on the bird.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I do like how the grates turned out on the back but they were a pain in the but...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I have done more but it seems like that it takes me more time to post this stuff than it does to build it....

Here lots of detail going in

And on top. I really like this but again should have been cleaner...

More Later, gotta go to college...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Okay, so on we go...

Started the engines and quickly found that getting the right shape was going to be an issue. Had four previous versions that failed utterly....

This set turned out ok, saw some photos of a scratch a while back that showed a more tubular look, hated it, went for this oval look but there were some other things I couldn't get in doing it this way...

One thing I found was that this was not the best way to mount the wings. They ended up having a flop to them that really sucked...

Yes, I think the wings are backwards too... I like them better this way cause of the whole flying brick thing about a Thunderhawk is unappealing... So I sort of did the wrong thing on purpose so to speak...

I started the third engine and...

Finished the turbine fins...

The canopy was very hard... I am glad it turned out as well as it did...

The main gun deck was fun but I screwed it up too and made it too tall... I had to take the tail fin off and make it taller... Still didn't get the right look it should have...

I still have to put on the twin linked heavy bolter sponsons and the missile racks, as well, I want to put a bench in the front troop hold with some pipes and such on the interior walls. The front ramp is going to get a complete makeover too. I hated how it turned out and want it to look more like the resin models... Thats for another time, though....

This, simply put, is astounding work. You sound like Puddleglum from Narnia with all your "I did this wrong, and this is too tall, and this is too floppy"... You should give yourself more credit, there are many scratchbuilders who dream of having the skills you possess. I can't wait to see the finished result! Heck, I'd be interested in commission work from you, seriously. Gimme more plasticard work! Awesome!

Hey thanks all, if you think this is good be sure to check out Blackadders build. I have taken most of what I did here from what I have seen him do. His accuraccy is almost unholy....

It appears you went for the more traditional sized T'hawk; very impressive. I am particularly interested in your method of manufacturing the turbine fins which are always a source of irritation for me to build due to the repetition. I am also amazed by the speed of construction that both you and Tebrey attain to produce both aesthetically pleasing and workmanlike models. From the image properties, it took you only three weeks to progress to the point you are now. Looking forward to the landing gear interpretation.

Very nice work,

Blackadder

Thank you, Black, but honestly, I only consider myself to be getting started. I think there are a lot of skills to learn and you and Tebrey are my chosen mentors.

The turbine fins are so simple they almost always take three tries to get one that works. I cut a disc and bisect it eight times, then score each of the lines 1/8 inch from center to the edge and break along those lines. I learned that the standard hole punch chad fits nicely into the center and is a good flat surface for mounting a conical turbine tip, although I rarely put one on. Once the fins are seperated i twist each of them slightly to the right angle.

The T-hawk took about four weeks, yes, but it was done for a commission of 20 dollars for a 14 year old player at our shop as a very special favor. His brother lost his legs in Afghanistan and he wanted to do something nice for him.
The landing gear will not appear in photos because I did a very poor job on it and do not intend to go back over it. Yours will serve as the inspiration for my T-hawk which will be based on the images you posted but except in the traditional size range. I am hoping to start it in a couple weeks but I have a set of land raiders and rhinos to build for my Chaos army and a new Mars Pattern commissioned for a friends kids birthday on the 12th of Nov. Talking about speed i started the toes for this commission today and it needs to be deliverable on the 12th. I intend it to be the cleanest build I have done to date. Am I crazy?

Well, this was actually built for a friend of mine who is currently not available to come and get it and, honestly I have been told, that he will not be around again. I do not have a space marine army, nor do I plan on putting on together. I guess it will get painted chapter non-specific and set on a shelf as display. Sort of a waste, but I have several friends who will play it occasionally I am sure. I plan on putting together some Chaos flyers for my APOC army list.

Incidentally, I had also planned to shelve this thread, however, since I am most likely going to be painting it now, I will keep it going for a while.

How about painting it like baneblade in WD? Where it was painted to look like metal just pure metal and no paint had been currently added at that stage? Anyway looks good!LOL!

This.

Truly great work you make it look easy. Some of your lines are a little crooked but hey, those things could be fixed by adding more detail later. What color ya gonna paint her?

I like that Idea. I saw one from Blue Table Paint that was pretty wicked. It had some color but was mostly bare metal, and a lot of weathering.
