So, this will be my first propper topic on Dakka, besides an introductory "Hi" post.

A little background;

After having played WF in my teens for a bit, I had to stop due to the costs of buying/painting an army was simply too high for a school going kid. I have started coming back to the hobby after finding my old White Dwarf issues during a move to my own house. After flipping the pages I got sucked back into the wonderfull grimdark world that is Warhammer. Instead of going back to the stunties and knights and magic slinging wizards, however, I decided I wanted to get my hands dirty on some tanks and dakka dakka. Playing WoW far too serious for years got me burned out on the whole fantasy theme, and playing DoW2 got me intrigued in the whole galactic empire of man kinda fluff. I purchased the AOBR boxed set, a painting starter set, and a gakload of paints, and got going. I just forgot everything I knew about the actual hobbying, which after spending hours on teh_interwebz brought me here. Veni, vidi, velcro. (I came, I saw, I stuck).

So there my Space Marines where. I had an idea on color scheme, and a concept for the background fluff (yes, new chapter, gives me more freedom then excisting chapters, but its based on Salamanders). Reading a few of these topics, I figured it would help keep me on track with painting, and more important, give me some much needed C&C to improve my skills and give me new ideas for my army.

For the TL;DR guys. I'm new, I play Space Marines

COLOR SCHEME:
After reading some 40k wiki's articles, browsing some forums, and flipping through the old white dwarfs I had, I decided on a color scheme;

Green with Yellow shoulderpads/detailing. Shoulder trims will indicate company
Spoiler:

Basecoating White (Citadel Skull white)
Greens: Orkhide shade (foundation), Snot Green (main color), Scorpion green (highlight), Thraka Green (wash),
Yellows: Bleached bone (foundation), Golden Yellow (main), Sunburst Yellow (highlight)
Metal: Black, Boltgun metal (main), Chainmail (highlight), Mithril Silver (highlight)
Leather: Calthan brown (foundation), Vomit brown (highlight) Badab black (highlight)
Gold: (aquila and shoulder trims for 2nd company): Tin bitz (foundation), Shinig gold (main color), Burnished gold (highlight)
Red: Red gore (foudnation), Blood red (main), Blazing Orange (highlight)
Eyes: Mordian blue, warlock purple, skull white

FLUFF:
The White Fangs Chapter of Space Marines is a chapter of unknown founding and geneseed, beeing recently "re-discovered" by an explorator fleet near the galactic core. To their own account, they have been founded during in M32, and suspected Salamander succesors. During the decades of the Great Scouring, the White Fangs where tasked with a simple search and destroy directive, locating and exterminating heretics wherever they where to be found. Last communications with the White Fangs indicated their main force was in pursuit of a small band of orks and where heading to a backwater planet called Bast. Nothing was heard since, and the chapter was suspected lost or turned renegade. An imperial Explorator Fleet re-established contact about 100 years ago, finding the White Fangs still loyal, but in desperate need of aid. After arriving in the system, all their psykers where killed by a violent warp storm that also crashed their largest ships, disabling their communications with the outside world explaining why they did not contact the Imperium.

The chapter is in the process of rebuilding its strength, but will stay in the system since they have now officially been appointed to guard the system, monitoring Marhees II, which is the location of a minor warprift and the source of the storms that trouble the system.

The fluff makes for some good background for battles yet to be played i.m.o. We've got orks roaming around. There are habitable planets, one will include a fledgling forge world, and after the discovery of squat ruins the Ad Mech will be on the hunt for long lost STC's. Inquisitors will be keeping a close watch as the chapter has not fully proven its loyalty in their eyes. Elder and Dark Eldar can pop up through webways. The warp rift will be a good source for much discomfort of Daemon and Chaos origin. One moon could be a Necron tomb, I'll just have trouble getting Tau and Tyranids to fit in.

TACTICS/ARMY LISTS:
WF's favor flanking AM troops with dreads/termies coming up the center, followed by Tac squads for support and securing objectives. My army list will mostly center around Assault Marines and melee Dreads, and does not field Librarians to comply with fluff.
Though im planning to build the WF's codex compliant, I will switch every 6th Tac squad with an assault marine in my battle companies to reflect tactics used.

Random thoughts and plans:
Spoiler:

As I have an incredibly small force atm, I'm just focussing on getting the AOBR set done.
I will not get veterans any time soon, WF's dont have enough marines to field a veteran company yet!
I will however get a squad of veterans to represent the command squad for my 2nd comp. captain.
Librarians are a no-no
I like things to go FWOOSH, so flamers are always good.
Lion's should roar, a predator or two should be in the company
My Captain should be a bad-ass, having lead his company for century's without Imperial aid. I'm looking for a big ass 2hander to count as relic blade.

Army list:

HQ 1:
Captain: Relic blade, Bolt Pistol
130 pts

Command Squad: Company standard
Champion: Power Axe, Combat Shield
Apothecary: Chainsword, Bolt Pistol
3 Veterans: Power weapon, plasma gun (I want the squad to have a uniform look, so no "all-round" kinda weaponry)
220 pts

Razorback transport: TL Lascannons, Storm Bolter, Extra Armour (advice wanted on Razorback load-out)
100 pts

HQ 2:
Chaplain: Power Armour, Power Fist, Crozius Arcanum, Jump Pack
140 pts

Troops:
Tactical squad:
1 Sargeant: Power Fist, Bolt Pistol, Melta Bombs
9 Marines: Missile Launcher, Melta Gun
205 pts

4 Scouts: Heavy Bolter
115 pts

Scout squad w/ Sniper Rifles and Camo Cloaks:
1 Sargeant: Sniper rifle, Teleport homer
4 Scouts: Missile Launcher
115 pts

Elites:

Terminator Assault squad:
1 Sargeant: Lightning claw x2
4 Terminator Marines: Lighting claw x2
200 pts
Land raider Redeemer: TLAC, 2x Flamestorm Cannons, Storm Bolter, Multi-melta

9 Marins: Flamer x2
215 pts

Assault Squad w/ Jump Packs:
1 Sargeant: Power Fist, Combat Shield, Melta Bombs
9 Marins: Flamer x2
255 pts

Heavy Support:

Predator: TL Las, 2x Las, Storm Bolter, Extra Armour
190 pts

Total: 2955 pts

As Im a WYSIWYG kinda guy, the following conversions will take place:

- Captain model (AOBR) will need a 2 handed sword of sortss as a relic blade, have been eyeing a Grey Knight box sword, need suggestions on how to handle the boltgun though...
- Company champion model (mk2 vet with power axe model) will need a combat shield added and lose its bolt pistol. I was thinking about getting a shield left over from an assault squad sarge, maybe the arm/hand as well.
- Apothecary model will need a chainsword added
- Company standard bearer will have a gun swap, bolt pistol replaced with a plasma gun adn will need a power weapon slung on its side or something

Hello Mahq.

Congratulations on finding your way back to the hobby! Your scheme looks good, the colors you have chosen mix well. If you don't mind, could you post some of your fluff? It would be interesting to know a little more about your chapter. Got any special character, to fit in with your background, in mind yet?

I planned to start writing up my fluff (which is quite a bit considering it's been rumbling around in my mind for 2 months now) this evening, and will post in the appropriate forum and will interlink them. So far Ive only come up with chapter history, location, chapter setup and 1 character (my AOBR captain had to be named no?)

Synopsis to get you going; Post-heresy war chapter of unknown founding (Salamander succesors suspected due to terminator and devastator heavy tactics) thought lost for millennia but recently was re-discovered guarding a planet which acts rather odd to say the least. Main theme will be the history and current developments surrounding their star system. Hopefully this will lead to some antagonist within the White Fangs stepping forward to write some more fluff around.

Well Ive hit a spot of trouble, I found that my Canon EOS300D is pretty useless since ive lost the CD with the software in a recent move, so I'll have to start using my cell phone camera to upload pictures.

So pictures tomorrow, of a hopefully completed squad by then

Fluff will come as well, got sucked in watching Colombiana and Priest last night (Priest gave me some good inspiration for an Inquisitor character though!)

Colours are looking good. BTW if you lost your cd type in the model of your camera + software and you can probably download it! It would look a lot better with a good camera!

Doesnt work, searched torrent sites, download sites and the offical Canon website ofc, but all that you can download is an updater, not the original software package... Very odd policy from Canon...

Got my cell's camera working, but had to create a flickr account... sigh,

Update:

New picture, I've tried to tone down the terrible highlighting, and added some color to the details (leather, gold trims on the pads).

Question:
What's a "good" way to get the yellow even?
I would like some tips on highlighting, because somehow I just cant get it right i.m.o. even after watching several how to video's and reading some tutorials

AOBR dreadnought WIP, still not happy with the (thick) highlighting.

I like the highlighting thick.

And for me, getting yellow even takes two steps. First, paint bone white (or bubonic brown, pick your poison) where you want the yellow. Then paint the yellow over it.
If you try to paint over too dark a color, you will need many more coats of yellow, and that sometimes leads to it being too thick

I used skull white and vomit brown on the first squads shoulder pads, but was thinking about using bleached bone (same as bone white I assume) on the dread's alternative colored armor parts.

Have been working on the dread some more, disliking the highlights on the arms, but the body looks good imo.

Looking good man

And bleached bone works the same as skull white for that purpose

Ill try to get a beter picture up tomorrow, one with natural light. I've finally started working in all earnest, my AOBR tac squad has been primed now that I have my "blutack" delivered. They're primed, done a first layer of orkhide, seconded on the first 3 models with DA. I think both dark greens are a bit excessive and dont add much, so ill try a model without the DA next. I've found I really like detailing the models so instead of doing a squad at a time, I'm going for the model by model way.

Model for model is how I roll. I feel it makes each model better. However, I do recommend to paint the main armor color for ALL the marines first, as its the biggest and most boring part, then do all the details etc for each marine.

Thanks for the advice, sounds like a plan.

New Dread pics, sadly its clouded in the Netherlands today (like usual), so not as bright as I hoped.

I'm unsure what to do with the HF's fuel canister encasing on the right side of the model. Red doesnt seems appropriate, nor does metal or gold. Any advice would be welcome.

New guys awaiting some paint

Comparrison, left one is almost done, middle is with Orkhide and DA, right is Orkhide only

I like what you're doing here and your minis look good, espcially the Sarge, but I wouldn't be me if I didn't nit pick. IMO the yellow is too bright, not bad, just bright. Now I rarely paint yellow so I'm not the one to give any advice on it, but it's just too...BZZZZT...ya know. But please don't let me deter you, I'd definitely like to see more.

Thanks for the comment, but I intended the yellow bright . These guys need to be flashy and hero like, their armor polished to a shine. In this grimdark future, my marines should be a beacon of hope!

The DE army im planning on doing after my 3k points of marines is going to be the opposite. Dark and evil.

EIDT: I washed some pads with Gryphonne Sepia, wich dulled them down a great deal, but I'm still not sure I want to do that on all models.
