Any tutorials would be great! been having no problems painting white helmets etc for my ultra marines! When I started to work on some Menoth mini's etc. thats when I found hard to get a nice sharp white for the armor and nice blend of grey's with white with layering! Any info would be great thx in advance!

I have an all white chapter that is "comic book looking" and my white is crisp and bold..... Start off using white primer, next I wanted brown shades instead of gray so I washed mine with delvin mud, BEING SURE not to douse the whole model...aim for the recesses and cracks only, its tedious but will save on the process later... Next use a thinned down white to "clean up the wash and build layers toward the clean surface so it lends a shading effect.... In your case for gray simply use badab black and to lighten it if you require simply thin it down more...

Hope this helps, either way it is tedious and you will never want to do it again, I did 105 models and 12 vehicles lol, super clean looking but I will never do a white army again!

White can be a bit tricky with Menoth since their scheme/color pallet has a warmer look featuring a lot of golds and cream colors. To compliment that scheme (if you're doing the standard Menoth colors), you don't want to go standard grey to white, but rather a light brown/khaki color to white.

In the Menoth book, they suggest (from darkest to lightest):
Bastion Grey -> Cryx Bane Highlight ->Menoth White Base-> Menoth White Highlight

I did a quick sketchup, where the Base color of the Menofix was Cryx Bane, then some Menoth Base, then Menoth Highlight.

If you want them to be pure white, I'd do Cryxbane then Menoth Highlight.

Thx for the info, I've previously tried going thru the warmachine menoth painting guide but did never caught the hang of it. The way they do it looks really nice, (I take it they used some wet blending techniques?). Would there an example how you would work that up on big thick curve armor? eg. shoulders pads?

The bone-ish looking white on the face would probably work well for Menoth as it is a warmer white, it was very easy to do.

Base--Vallejo Dark Sand
Wash- Single layer(thin) of Sepia
1st highlight--50/50 Vallejo Dark Sand/Vallejo Ivory
2nd highlight--Vallejo Ivory
3rd Highlight--Vallejo Foundation White

You can just do hard highlighting with the above colors, or blend them, either way they look great.

the best kept secret by gw for these is vallejo model color sky blue for a base. simple drybrush skullwhite gw over it like twice and i guarantee you will be very happy with the results. for added depth on larger white pieces and helmets id base vallejo sky blue, water down regal blue wash over it, drybrush again pale blue, then skull white. works wonders for me

TY all so much for the info, I shall do some more painting /paint stripping, until I get some satisfactory results ^_-. I've been going with a white primier then, create some grey washes get that over my models and been dry brushing it a few times with skull white effects some what seemed really dirty and didn't seem to end up with a nice smooth surface. I eventually ended up trying layering techniques but it took me forever to get one part done! Once again TY all for the input!

For white cloth you also can use Vallejos Pale Grey Wash. Just prime white, apply your base, wash with pale grey and then clean up with your base again.

Works really well and takes less time then building up your white through layers of gray.

Thx again for more info! however any1 out there gone thru any of those methods with a step by step guide + pics for each step? I've just stripped Kreoss AGAIN for the X time and going to try one of the other methods mentioned above. The best video reference I found so far is 'awesome paint jobs - painting white scars part1/2'.

So i had a bit of time today before Melbourne Cup and thought, lets do some layering test for the cloth part.

1. Fortress grey base coat
2. 1st Layer - 1 part skull white / 1 part fortress grey
3. 2nd Layer - 2 part skull white / 1 part fortress grey
4. 3rd highlight skull

Good enough? not good enough? your comments can help me improve my work! ^_-

I used a white primer, and then VERY watered down menoth white with 9-10 coats to get this pristine white I was looking for...
Was tedious but the end result was worth it.

(now if I can figure out how to shade white without ruining it I would be golden!!)

The next thing that came to my attention over the weekend i managed to grab myself some vallejo slowed medium, basically it should extend the time it drys! i was doing some more testing trying to wet blend white with GW paint range to get a smoother transition. But I am not exactly sure what the mixing quantity would be 2:1 paint/slowed medium. I've tried mixing a 1:1 but it tends to be really thick. Anyone out there gone this path and done some wet blending with white?

Ok so I've finally mastered some white layering stuff by brush using a layering/blending technique! As I have decided to move on and play some Warmachine. So far this is the result using some P3 paints.

From Menoth base white to Menoth white hightlight, I have yet to do Morrow White as I might strip the model for the 13th+ time. I think it's decent but I am still not very happy with the result and might try do some airbrushing the layering speeding things up! Using the brush to blend/layer took me forever just to do one model!

I plan on testing what the PoM book have suggested from Cryxbane hightlight to Menoth White base then Menoth White highlight (maybe a morrow white for the final color)

Here's some pics attached, I've managed to brush up a modulation effect on the white metal plates! Please comment! I might just beat myself with a stick and strip the model AGAIN and redo from scratch!

I use the tint colour I want over a black prime coat.

So for my raven guard I use one or two coats of codex or fortress grey then layer thin white starting from the lightest area to the darkest areas and leaving shadows out entirely. total of 5-10 coats start to finish.

Remember that the colour you use underneath will give the tint so you will need it to be a mid tone.
